Or how in the world did Bedanova beat Monica at the US Open?

I watched WTT this afternoon. Bedanova played singles against Sheepers and she was terrible. She made 44638465738465834 unforced errors while not even going for any big shots. I mean to lose to Sheepers who lost to a 50 y.o. grandma earlier this week is totally  .

If Bedanova's #18 in the world was deserved, how could she lose her skills so totally? :p

Actually Bedanova was ranked at one time 16th in the world. She's had a lot of injury and it's hard to be confident coming back from injuries. She's been trying to use WTT to get back into form. It hasn't worked yet but hopefully it will.

yes i can't believe they gave her the number 18 ranking. she never had the right to be ranked there. it's not like she has had any injury problems or anything.

I only remember seeing her that one match, against Monica @ the USO & I think it was just a case of 'one of those tournaments' where Bedanova played about as well as she could & got some good wins... Monica was obviously not at her best that day though & that is a large part of the reason.

I don't know how she's playing now but I imagine her struggles with injuries have set her back further than she was back then...she was injured b4 she had a chance to make more of a name for herself & hasn't recovered...

I thought that she has recovered from her injuries at least a year ago. I understand that it may not be enough for some players to get to top 20, but it should be enough to start hitting a decent ball.

PS. Watching players like Bedanova makes you understand how amazing were comebacks of Kim, Justine, Lindsay and Serena.

but looking back at her results in '00 she had wins over Myskina(in a qualifying, wow she's come a long way :)), Petrova, Tauziat, Mauresmo, Smashnova, Henin... & in '01 she beat Elena D.,Arantxa, & then of course Shaughnessy & Seles @ USO before getting beat by hingis( 2 & 0) so, there was some talent there, just injuries I guess..

she was a number 1 junior from memory as well.

she had serious weight issues as well but it just didn't get any publicity because doesn't look like Dani.

i suspect she'll be one of the those players who will have a resurgance at some point. remember she has beaten some decent players even this year - i think she beat Kveta Peschke at Indian Wells or somewhere like that.

yeah but for some players it is not as simple as getting over the injury and then coming back to where they once where. confidence is a huge part of tennis - daja was struggling with her form even before getting injured and i think there have been quite a few different issues with her over weight and even the country she plays for.

Dude, the girl's been through a lot. Cut her some slack. Not everyone can come back like Justine, Kim, Lindsay, Serena, and Venus.

[QUOTE=Wannabeknowitall]Actually Bedanova had a lot of injury and it's hard to be confident coming back from injuries. QUOTE]

So TRUE... I had shoulder surgery and am just coming back. 1. like Serena found... it's hard to stay in shape when you are injured. 2. as you said about Bedanova... it's hard to feel confident.

Yesterday, playing singles at 4-4 I went for my bread-and-butter down-the-line shot and it was 12 feet out... Would have been farther out if the fence wasn't there! That was at 40-30 and made it duece... the next point all I could think about was "I used to own that shot and now it's 12 FEET OUT!!! I double faulted on the next point and was shakey on the one after. I lost! And what I've realized is that my confidence level is so low that I'm not even playing my game.

So I can difinetly understand the confidence/injury issue.

I remember seeingher get trounced by Hingis something like1 and 1 after she beat Monica. Daja just doesn't have any big weapon in her game and relied alot on being very consistent in matches and confident in her game. She definately has a nice solid game and very good hands at the net, just no big weapon to make things easier for her to finish any rallies. Simply put, she NEEDS to be in top physical condition and very confident thru winning lots of matches before she gets her groove back and im sure we will see her top 50 again........top 20 these days may be asking too much as alot of the girls ranked in the top 20 are hitting the ball harder these days..

i was actually particular impressed with her serve/volley and net game at hopman cup 2003 or 2004 i think. if she can get her confidence going, and move in to the forecourt alot more we should be seeing her rise up the ranks again.....but judging from the reports from WTT it is gonna take a while i guess

Everyone 'loses their skills' eventually. With Daja it happened very quickly. The picture below was taken when she was ranked #17. Her career high was #16. I saw her play several times over the two year period when she climbed the rankings. She was impressive to watch. She hit the ball very cleanly, with efficient strokes, and pretty form. Also, she was quick. She was one of my favorites. She earned the #16 ranking and deserved it. Would like to see her come back into the top 50.
