Was wondering if Venus doesn't make it into the top 8 by November. Can a grand slam win, push that player into the the YEC tournament?

I've heard that the 8th player can be chosen by the WTA, but I'm not sure if that is true.

Venus is #5 in the Race to the Championship and the year is only half way over. No reason for her not to make it.

Although she should make it b/c she is in a good spot heading into her best part of the year, I think someone said that the WTA has the right to choose the 8th player if they want to.... If it was Venus of course I'd want them to of course, but I don't think they will b/c then they'd have to hear about how they cheated somebody who had earned their spot, which is true b/c how would we feel if our fave got looked over although they earned the spot.. Hopefully Venus will make it w/o the need of a wc:)

She's in a good position right now and as long as Venus can
stay healthy and play she won't need a wild card into anything.

I've heard about that rule as well and seeing
as Venus has a Slam I don't see why not.

She most certainly would've been a better
replacement last year instead of Zvonareva
that's for sure.

She won't need one.

I think this is mostly to cover cases like somebody winning two slams then being injured for four months. If it was Venus of course I'd want them to of course, but I don't think they will b/c then they'd have to hear about how they cheated somebody who had earned their spot...Don't agree with you there. The players all know only the top seven are guaranteed spots. So there is no need for #8 to feel cheated. As for Venus, she's kind of in the 'golden seat', as far as being #8 goes. If #8 is also the WImbledon champ, it's kinda hard to skip them for somebody else.

What's tough is if #9 is a GS champ, #8 is a GS champ, and #7 is Petrova.

It'll be an interesting conundrum for the WTA if Venus were to play like her late 2004/early 2005 self for the rest of the year. Because she would probably not be in the top 8 if that were to happen. If the 8th player is a slam champ like Kuznetsova, for example, it would be extremely difficult to kick her out in favor of Venus.

by the end of this year I highly doubt that Kuzzy will be holding a slam.

she wouldn't make it only if she tanks the rest of the way but it's highly improbably given her recent form

The 8th player can be a Grand Slam winner not in the top 8, but they must be in the top 20...atleast thats what the men do.

She'l make it...it should be a competitive YEC's!

Umm, she won last year, she'll always be a "grand slam champ."

I doubt that it'll be an issue. Venus will almost certainly make it anyway.

I'm really new to tennis. How do you get into the YEC?

Is it the WTA rankings? Or the Porsche Race Top 10? I was under the impression that it was the Porsche Race ...

Here's the Porsche Race Top 10:

1 L. DAVENPORT
2 M. SHARAPOVA
3 J. HENIN-HARDENNE
4 A. MAURESMO
5 V. WILLIAMS
6 K. CLIJSTERS
7 N. PETROVA
8 P. SCHNYDER
9 S. WILLIAMS
10 M. PIERCE

I think the question should be, "can Serena wildcard into the YEC?"

I think out of all of the current slam holders, Justine and Venus have the best chances of making the YEC so far.... but hey, you never know

I also think this htread should not be about Venus. I am sure serena will alos be able to make it into the top eight, after all we are going into the part of the year on her favourite surface. Petrova and schnyner are ahead of her and i am usre she can out do them. the rest fo the top 6 seem pretty much set, i don't see any of them losing ground unless they get injured.

There should be a rule where all grand slam winners of the season should automatically b=e granted a set place in the season-ending championships. Therefore, Serena,Justine and Venus should be the first definite 3 to make YEC. It just seems really silly that a YEC shouldn't contain the year's grand slam winners, regardless of whether they finish highly enough in the points race or not.

The men have a rule for automatic entry I believe. Strange that the women don't. I'd like to see the 8 players be:

Davenport, Sharapova, JHH, Mauresmo, Serena, Venus, Kim, Pierce.

I highly doubt Petrova will remain in the top 8. Schnyder might I guess, but she gains most of her points on clay. It's up to Serena if she can play her way back into form this summer

However, the YEC field is always s hard to predict beause players always pull out b/c of injury at the end of a long season.

yeah i think grandslamwinners should be entered in the champoinships, it just would be less fun if a grandslamchampoin is missed. owh well my 8 players would be: Henin, Clijsters, Davenport, Williams, Williams, Sharapova, Mauresmo and Kuznetsova/dementieva/myskina

I thought GS winners of the year are automatically allowed to be in the YEC...

if they aren't near the top they shouldn't be accepted in my opinion, the men's system works great for me, the top 7 are guaranteed with teh 8th spot up for grabs if need be, it's a great system, however, should the three champs so far play a reasonably full schedule then they'll hold on, and i foresee one of the top players (contending for the YEC already) winning the US Open anyway, so we'll see, should be awhile before the women's game faces that dilemma of the WC

ATP assures a place to a player who won a GS title, Does that happens in WTA?
