Um....Davenport and Ivanovic the flattest? LOL. They hit the ball hard, and while they are fairly flat, they use a lot of top spin on most of their shots.

Davenport hits with quite a bit of top spin on her forehand, that's why she generated some amazing angles at Wimbledon. If you see the Clijsters match, you would definitely not say she hits as flat as the likes of Frazier or Tanasugarn.

There is a difference between looped topspin a la Martinez, aggressive looped top spin a la Mauresmo, and what are known as "heavy" shots with an infusion of top spin, a la Davenport.

Lindsay's shots are hit so hard and with so much feel that they can sometimes look flat, but they're not. Her shots have a wicked kick to them that makes them not just hard, but very difficult to time because they shoot through so quickly.

Anna K, Ivanovic, Seles for sure hit flatter than the rest.

Steffica Greles
Jul 10th, 2005, 04:41 PM
Seles was varied. She could hit flat when she went for winners, or she could loop balls high to those with sliced backhands.

If you watch a lot of her matches you'll see that there was no way her shots were hit without any spin.

Ivanovic doesn't even know what topspin is.

I agree. Lindsay used to be a flat hitter, but has added more spin to her shots. You can tell because her follow through on the forehand goes straight up over her right shoulder/head as opposed to over the left shoulder.

Natalie tauziat is the one that spings to mind when people talk about flat shots as well as Kimiko Date!! I know they are now retired but those are the 2 that really hit flat

Hitting everything so flat isn't that good. You need spin.

definately Myskina thats why I like watching her play especially on the grass, but if she got a bad bounce or anything its not easy for her to recover - her forehand isnt as flat as her backhand

Why? Why waste energy to make it spin if you can use it to hit ball harder so your opponent can't even touch it. Spin is needed for those who can't control flat strokes ;)

I love players who just rip the ball flat, like me. :haha: The low-percentage plays are always the most entertaining to watch. That's why I loved how Dokic and Kournikova used to play. Came up with errors yes, but their winners were so great. :rocker2:

I don't think any player hits a ball more flat than Amy Frazier, that's her claim to fame- and of course being the last player to play Steffi Graf.

Sugiyama, Date, Tanasugarn, Asagoe, Frazier...

Lindsay hits the ball flatter than most but definitely not the flattest. Same with Maria. Sprem actually puts a ton of spin on her shots, it just looks like she's hitting flat.

A ton is a major overstatement.

A good measurement for the "flatness" of a groundstroke is the player's grip on the racket. A "western" grip produces more spin than an "eastern" grip. Amy Frazier and Kristina Brandi both use grips that are so "eastern" that they are almost "continental" (a once-popular grip that is no longer taught in today's tennis world). Those two win hands down.

I remember that Lindsay Lee-Waters said after her 2004 Stanford match against Venus that she never played an opponent who hits the ball so flat.
Kveta hits the ball very flat, too. Na also - That's why they are my faves...;)

Fraizer hits as flat as a pancake, same with myskina. People have said Rubin and Dementieva hit flat but they most definately dont, i saw them both at the open a few years ago and they hit nice topspin, more so Chanda Rubin.
