Below are the details for the next edition of the tournament, most will not be revealed until October - but here is the early news:

DATES
December 31, 2005 until January 6, 2006

TEAMS INVITED
Australia - as hosts
Slovak Republic - reigning champions

VENUE
Burswood Dome, Perth, Western Australia

NEW ADDITION
Tennis players ranging from social hitters to pennant competitors can now be involved in this year’s Hyundai Hopman Cup and play on the Burswood Dome, Centre Court, as part of a new all inclusive amateur tournament announced.

The launch of the Hyundai Amateur Hopman Cup provides thousands of players at metropolitan and country centres the chance to win their way to the Finals at the Burswood Dome in January as part of this summer’s ITF mixed teams championship.

There are two divisions – one for serious, come pennant competitors and one for the social player that would like to be part of a team and experience the fun of competing in a tournament.

The new tournament will be the same format as the professional version, with teams consisting of one male and one female player, playing women’s singles, men singles and a mixed doubles in a round-robin format.

Please post any further information you may know.

Is Serbia and Montenegro invited (Ana Ivanovic and Novak Djokovic). SCG would easily win this tournament, if given a chance.
They better stop inviting the same teams over and over again....slovak republic  have been there for the last 4 or 5 years and they finaly won. They better invite Serbia  .

Hey ! Slovak Republic is better then serbia :nerner:

they don't have a good men player , so they can't be invited

and your comment abouth they finally won , isn't true , because Slovakia won the hopman cup in 1998 to.

Fantastic

I think it was a Serbian poster who speculated that Serbia-Montenegro had been invited to play with Ana Ivanovic on the team. It was not mentioned whether Janko Tipsarevic or Novak Djokovic would be the male partner, merely speculated that they were the most likely candidates. I'd personally prefer Ivanovic and Djokovic.

I'd also like to see Czech Republic with Nicole Vaidisova and Tomas Berdych, and France with Tatiana Golovin and Richard Gasquet. However, Golovin's signing is reliant on her Gold Exempt commitments to Gold Coast.

The tournament organizers were pursuing Maria Sharapova and Marat Safin for Russia, Roger Federer for Switzerland (as they do every year without much luck due to Patty Schnyder declining her numerous invitations), Rafael Nadal for Spain (possibly with Anabel Medina Garrigues), and I heard a rumour about Justine Henin-Hardenne for Belgium (but that's unlikely given Justine's health problems).

Australia will find it hard to field a strong team this year. Alicia Molik looks set to return, as she loves the tournament, but Lleyton Hewitt is reluctant to participate and I can't see Mark Philippoussis signing on if he's not confident about being injury-free. The male singles spot would thus fall to Wayne Arthurs, Todd Reid or even Chris Guccione, but I'm sure they would all rather prefer to be earning ATP points on home soil than playing exhibition events. It's a unique time of the year for the lower-ranked Aussie players and a rare chance to make an impact with home support behind them. It's possible that Australia may end up with last year's replacement player, Paul Baccanello, or Jaymon Crabb from WA. No matter who plays though, it shouldn't be too hard to fill the seats.

I don't think Justine is interested for the hopman cup.

and France with Tatiana Golovin and Richard Gasquet. However, Golovin's signing is reliant on her Gold Exempt commitments to Gold Coast.

I don't know if you are aware - but this pairing was in the 2005 tournament, but because of the Gold Coast tourney, they had to pull out late.

The tournament organizers were pursuing Maria Sharapova and Marat Safin for Russia, Roger Federer for Switzerland (as they do every year without much luck due to Patty Schnyder declining her numerous invitations),

Sharapova would be great, and I doubt Safin will say no to another trip to Perth. Federer was touted again, and there was a rumour that Hingis would come out of retirement, but nothing eventuated.

Australia will find it hard to field a strong team this year. Alicia Molik looks set to return, as she loves the tournament, but Lleyton Hewitt is reluctant to participate and I can't see Mark Philippoussis signing on if he's not confident about being injury-free.

Lleyton would be a great competitor; and I doubt they would even want the Scud to play. One of the lower guys would be alright, especially Todd Reid or local boy Crabb.

No matter who plays though, it shouldn't be too hard to fill the seats.

Well I'll be filling one :)
You got that statement right :D

I was aware that France had Golovin and Gasquet this year. Tatiana pulled out due to her Gold Exempt commitment on the Gold Coast. Apparently, she double-booked herself thinking that the Hopman Cup was played a week earlier. She got confused because she was due to play the qualifying tie on the weekend before, not realizing that the tournament concluded the following weekend. I hope they return. Gasquet is playing incredibly well this year and a really exciting young player to watch.

I can almost predict that Wayne Arthurs, Todd Reid, Peter Luczak and Chris Guccione will be awarded Wildcards into the Next Generation Hardcourts in Adelaide and probably won't forgo potential points to play in Perth. Fingers crossed for Lleyton Hewitt to return but he did so well in Australia this year by not playing in Perth that he might stick to the same schedule. Chances are he will play Adelaide again. Jaymon Crabb would be an inspired choice IMO if he's fit enough to play. Maybe even one of our top Aussie junior boys might get a guernsey the same way Jelena Dokic got her big break.

I wanna go... but I hope the The Netherlands will get asked back, and if Belgium come, then I hope it's Clijsters and Malisse...

They better not ask Mark P to play for Australia again! :fiery: if they do, I'll certainly be cheering against! I like Alicia, but then it will depend who she's playing! ;) Just hope I can get some time off work! ;)

Are there any up-and-coming Dutch boys to partner Michaella? She might need Richard to partner her. Peter is okay but he doesn't have the aura or skill of Richard, who is still playing competitively on the Senior's Tour, but not as intensely. On paper, he'd be killer in the mixed doubles matches, even though he wasn't the best doubles player out there when he played with Brenda.

Fantastic
Jul 14th, 2005, 05:32 PM
Sorry, I just realized I crashed your conversation, guys. Whoops. :o

The plan was for Michaella to team up with Richard at this year's HC but Richard was injured. So maybe, who knows next year?

DutchieGirl
Jul 14th, 2005, 05:56 PM
No, Richard wasn't injured this year. He had to pull out coz of commitments with the ABN-AMRO tourney in Rotterdam, which he is organisor of... so I assume he can't really play HC at all, coz it's always at the same time, and so he's always gonna have those commitments for Rotterdam. Which is a shame, coz I'd like to see them play together at HC.

and well there are some guys in juionrs doing ok...Antal van der Duim, Robin Haase, etc... but if Misa played with them, then NL would surely have to play quallies again, and if she's playing with one of the guys from the juniors, I don't think they'd actually qualify then. I'd prefer that she played with Peter or even a higher ranked player... (although I think Peter is about the highest at the moment, coz Sjeng's slipped alot, and I'm not sure where Raemon is ranked at the moment...). I also like Melle van Gemerden, but he's only ranked like 225 or something so...

But I think Misa and Richard would do well in mixed... they both have good volleys, and with Richard's serve too...I mean Misa's been Pretty good in doubles this year so...but I don't think they will ever play HC together, unless Richard can get out of his commitments for that week.

and you are allowed to join the conversation, it's no problem! ;)

Hmm but I just remember, Misa talked about texting Raemon during the Rotterdam tourney, coz it was on when she was playing in Memphis, so she might like to play with him, coz they seem to be friends... well I think most of the Dutch players get alogn, coz there aren't so many players...

Anyone want to throw out some ideas for new teams or teams that haven't played here in a few years (aside from Serbia)?

My suggestion is KOREA : Hyung-Taik Lee and Yoon Jeong Cho.
Perhaps GREAT BRITAIN : Andrew Murray and Elena Baltacha - 2 Scots!
Maybe CROATIA : Mario Ancic and Karolina Sprem.
What about INDIA : Leander Paes and Sania Mirza.

Which American team do you think will be invited? Would the organizers dare to skip the US team this year?

I don't think I'd want Argentina to come back unless they can find Gisela someone other than Coria, Nalbandian, Canas or Chela to play with her. Mariana Zabaleta seems like a good boy, and he's played here before. Gaston Gaudio seems okay too.

I'd love for Switzerland to play With Feds and Schnyder...but Patty won't play HC. She has always played Gold Coast and she loves it there so...

Pfft, fine then, if Patty doesn't wanna play, then invite Martina Hingis back! I reckon Roger would be cool with that. And I reckon she'd be up for it too. Maybe. LOL.

Can we speculate a Martina Navratilova and Andy Roddick team? That would be hilarious to watch. Or maybe John McEnroe and Alexandra Stevenson? LOL.

Italy would be nice, but not with Sanguinetti - he's getting older and is too injury-prone. I think Volandri would be a better choice. He's younger and doesn't look like he's dying of some incurable, wasting disease. No Italian team is complete without the "Funky Fungoolah" - Frankie Schiavone!

I have a feeling that Germany will be asked to come back to make up for Tommy Haas' injury towards the end of the tournament this year. He and Groenefeld made a surprisingly good team. If Haas won't play, they may ask Kiefer. I've been dying to watch Kiefer play live for ages!

A poster on another thread was almost certain that Serbia was invited to play.

I think Germany, Argentina, Russia, and France will be back in some shape or form. I think Spain might be included this year. I think Serbia will play-off with Great Britain.

Australia - Alicia Molik
Slovak Republic - Daniela Hantuchova, Dominik Hrbaty
Argentina - Gisela Dulko
Russia - Maria Sharapova, Marat Safin
Germany - Anna-Lena Groenefeld, Tommy Haas
France - Tatiana Golovin, Richard Gasquet
Spain - Anabel Medina Garrigues, Rafael Nadal
Serbia - Ana Ivanovic, Novak Djokovic
Great Britain - Elena Baltacha, Andrew Murray (OZ Open WC chance?)

Looks like a pretty good field to me.

I'm only saying Great Britain because Paul McNamee was at Wimbledon recruiting players. He would've had a good look at Andrew Murray, I'm sure. Otherwise, India looks like a possibility. But would he want to risk Sania Mirza sitting on her hands for the entire week when she would probably rather be earning points on the Gold Coast? If Serbia turns out to be the other play-off nation, they would want one of the teams to be "soft" because similarly, he wouldn't want one of his star attractions like Ivanovic risk doing nothing for the week if they lost in the qualifying tie.

Wow, just realized that I did not include USA. I wonder... Would they...?

She always seems to come LOL. I don't think she will though. Her and Safin don't seem to gel together for some reason - and there's no really good Russian male (apart from Davydenko), so replacing the female seems logical - they may leave the two together though.

I prefer Myskina too. Signing Sharapova would be a coup for the tournament but I'd rather watch Myskina. I doubt Sharapova would do any better in the mixed with Safin than Myskina.

What's so exciting about Clijsters and Malisse? IMO, they are so boring. Rochus and Henin-Hardenne are exciting. They are phenomenal players far beyond their stature.

I think the Aussie man might be Wayne Arthurs this year. Just a feeling since Wayne-o has never played HC before and Lleyton doesn't seem to like the tournament.

Guccione, Luczak etc will want to play Adelaide and will get WCs there. They should give a challenger guy a chance, like Kimmich, Junaid or Healey (all very good doubles players too).
I dont want to see Mark P but I think theres a good chance they'll invite him, as he is a big name, and he'd want to play and get 3 guaranteed matches rather than lose first round at a tournament.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind Todd Reid playing for Aus - assuming that Lleyton doesn't want to. And I would assume that Alicia will play, coz she always seems to love playing in Perth.

lol! sad but true.

i hear that adelaide is trying hard to lure both federer and hewitt , so...

todd reid has gone walk about...

at this stage , guccione is my pick to pair off with (hopefully) alicia.

Adelaide probably won't even need to lure Hewitt to secure him. Federer doesn't usually play until the Commonwealth Bank Classic at Kooyong. The field in Adelaide would be too easy for Roger anyway. He's more likely to play Doha where the money and the bigger points are at.

If the US plays, who will the male player be? Vincent Spadea? Taylor Dent? (Actually, I like the sound of him, but he's got big Adelaide points to defend) Mardy Fish? Robby Ginepri? James Blake again? Jan-Michael Gambill again?

Who will the female player be? Serena Williams? Lindsay Davenport? Venus Williams? Jennifer Capriati? Monica Seles maybe? Meghann Shaughnessy? Chanda Rubin? Amy Frazier? Venus and Jennifer have never played before. I wouldn't mind seeing the Wimbledon champion.

hewitt is no sure thing to play adelaide.

woodford was saying the other day that he was in discusions with hewitt and federer...

it could be argued that federer would rather play adelaide (or perth) than travel to the middle east in order to prep for the AO , i doubt points and money would greatly influence his decision making when wanting to prep for a slam.

also if he plays in adelaide , i can go see him. :bounce:

if golovin commits , i hope she checks her diary :o :o :o ;

Really? Hewitt is no sure thing? Even though he's FROM Adelaide? And loves the Adelaide tournament? He's not going to change a winning formula now.

As for Federer, we'll see, but I don't think he'll play Adelaide. It would be like Lindsay Davenport opting to play all those small Asian tourneys in September and October instead of the bigger ones in Europe. Roger is more likely to settle for just the Commonwealth Bank Classic in the following week. He played and won Doha in 2004 before winning the Australian Open. He didn't seem to mind playing in the Middle East then. If he would rather play Adelaide, why didn't he previously?

gsm
Aug 3rd, 2005, 12:08 AM
hewitt didnt play adelaide in 02 , 03 , 04 and in 01 , 05 he was knocked out in the qtrs...

this year federer played doha after training with roche in sydney over the christmas break , he may want to do this again.

if federer does decide to train in australia again this christmas , why cut the roche session short and travel to the middle east for the sake of some extra cash and points (he has plenty of both) when obviously his main priority would be preparing for a slam that he lost the previous year.

in 06 federer will prob play doha , but i wouldnt be shocked to see him in adelaide.

Hewitt played in Perth in 02, 03 and 04. Since then, he has stated that he dislikes playing in Perth because it's "not a real tournament" (his words). So it's more likely that he'll go back to favouring Adelaide from now on.

So why didn't Federer just play Adelaide instead of Doha this year and last year? I mean, if he was already in Australia... What's he waiting for, an appearance fee?

Sadly, it's true. Maria has been lured to the Gold Coast because she's afraid of looking bad in the mixed doubles matches in Perth. No, I made that up. I think she either just wants to fulfil her Gold Exempt commitments or she has been paid handsomely under the table. No doubt her image is more suited to the Gold Coast than to Perth anyway.

Oh, Maria. So disappointed in you... well, not really. This means Anastasia can play for Russia again! It means so much more to her anyway. But, um, will Anastasia want to play with Marat after this year's mixed doubles disaster? Maybe it will be Dinara playing with Marat this year? I've heard that this has always been on the tournament's wish list. Meh, it won't happen.

The tournament organizers are targeting Wayne Arthurs, Chris Guccione and Paul Baccanello. ivanovic, what they mean is that they will have a firm indication of which players intend to participate by the time of the US Open - usually around the start of the second week - and then the players sign a contract. The actual public announcement of the teams is left until mid-October to give the players and their management time to negotiate any changes in their contracts, if necessary. How did you get the pre-release?

After you buy your tickets through BOCS ticketing the first time, they send you a letter the following year, giving you the chance to purchase season tickets (including the final) again before the rest of the general public.

The letter is really a PR exercise but it also gives details of any changes to the tournament and sometimes special discounts and other incentives to get you to buy your tickets sooner.

I haven't taken up the offer in three years but I still receive the letters, so I'm guessing that once you do it, you continue to receive them.

I havent got my letter yet :(

I don't know anything about contracts, but so far, only Daniela Hantuchova has committed to play the tournament. Both Daniela and Dominik Hrbaty signalled their intention to play following the final of the HC this year. Daniela was the only one to fully commit to playing again. I'm sure Dominik will be back. He'd better be!

Hey, I received another one of those letters from BOCS today. It's the second one they've sent me in a month. It's exactly the same as the first one. They must really want me to buy those HC tickets really badly. I don't really fancy sitting on my arse in that Dome the whole week. I like moving around too much. Pass. TV will do me.

I can now also confirm what most of us knew anyway. Dominik Hrbaty and Daniela Hantuchova are now both definite starters for the Cup next year, both returning to defend their title. To top it off, Dominik has also said that he will be wearing his peak-a-boo Diadora shirt in Perth because, and I quote him, "it brings me good luck." Good, ol' Dom. Bringin' a little sex appeal back to the Dome since that sextress herself, Nicole Pratt, left the building almost 5 years ago. ;)

I find it way too hard to sit through an entire match but I sometimes felt really silly going for a walk around the Dome and seeing and doing the same things for a whole week. Most of the time, I just ate. I truly believe that the pressure inside the Dome helps keep your weight under control. I never gained any weight from pigging out for a whole week in there. It must be from all that walking around.

I got drunk at the tennis once. I took my friend Nick along one year and he bought us both full strength beer from the bar. I started drinking and three minutes later, I turned to him and said that I wasn't feeling anything. Then all of a sudden, I was almost wrecked. But in a good way. It was hilarious watching Nick stumbling on the stairs drunk, going for seconds. He's usually such an uptight and stiff kind of guy but put a little alcohol in him and he becomes a little boy again. It was so funny. He was getting right into it too (the tennis, I mean). We were watching Daniela Hantuchova and every time she hit a good shot, he'd raise his glass to her and say something loudly. He would never have done that under normal circumstances. Even though she lost that match, he didn't seem to care very much. After her match, we started stumbling around the Dome. We left the Dome for a bit and walked around the hotel, looking for an ATM. We got back in time for the men's singles but he wanted to get something to eat. So there I am, trying to keep a straight face while asking the girl for a serve of Nachos. I think she worked it out though. I was vainly attempting to be in too much control and as a result, I was speaking too slowly. She must have thought we were crazy. LOL.

I think Argentina will be invited back. They can't really ask anyone else but Gisela Dulko as the female player, but they have plenty of options as far as the men goes. David Nalbandian is the top Argentine male this year.

Why do these Argentine men keep getting done for drugs? Coria, Puerta, Chela, now Canas. It's alarming. And they all claim they were stitched up by a negligent doctor. Are they all saying that Argentina doctors are careless? Remind me never to seek an Argentina doctor for any medical advice. I might end up in a Bali prison cell somewhere, crying my eyes out on national television for my freedom. ;)

I also believe that Germany will be invited to return. They were on track for making the final after two rounds when Tommy Haas injured himself and couldn't play the third fixture in the round robin. Anna-Lena didn't win her singles but played very well in the mixed doubles with Tommy, often to seal the ties. Tommy stood out in the singles too. I expect them to be back for another go around.

I think James Blake will be invited back to Perth too. He's not the top American male, but Andy Roddick and Andre Agassi aren't likely to be starters. Mardy Fish, Robby Ginepri, Vincent Spadea, Taylor Dent and Justin Gimelstob (former champion) are all the next likely suspects down the list, along with Blake, but they'd probably go with him because he has a history with the tournament. Dent has Adelaide points to defend. Spadea isn't popular enough. Ginepri only recently emerged as a force. Fish seems to be a spent force now. I think Blake's partner will almost certainly be Meghann Shaughnessy again unless they can somehow convince one of the Williams sisters to play.
