What? Flinging shit isn't Hopman Cup talk? Dang nabbit... :( ;)

Okay, how about some interesting facts then? :D

1. France has had the highest number of representatives over the 16-year history of the tournament. There have been 10 male participants (Yannick Noah, Thierry Tulasne, Guillaume Raoux, Guy Forget, Henri Leconte, Jean-Philippe Fleurian, Fabrice Santoro, Arnaud Clement, Cedric Pioline, Arnaud Boetsch) and 9 female participants (Amelie Mauresmo, Mary Pierce, Pascale Paradis, Isabelle Demongeot, Nathalie Tauziat, Virginie Razzano, Catherine Tanvier, Sandrine Testud, Julie Halard). The USA come a close second with 8 male participants (John McEnroe, David Wheaton, Richey Reneberg, Jonathan Stark, Justin Gimelstob, Jan-Michael Gambill, Derrick Rostagno, James Blake) and 10 female participants (Pam Shriver, Mary Joe Fernandez, Zina Garrison, Monica Seles, Serena Williams, Lindsay Davenport, Chanda Rubin, Alexandra Stevenson, Meghann Shaughnessy, Amy Frazier).

Near Misses...

In 1995, the HC was close to signing Gabriela Sabatini to represent Argentina due to the tournament's new Pepsi sponsorship and Gaby's Pepsi endorsement. Unfortunately, no male counterpart was able to be found as they were committed elsewhere.

The 2000 event was set to be the most star-packed tournament ever when Steffi Graf asked to play the event one last time. Already signed to make her return was Monica Seles after a 9-year absence, to represent her adopted country of USA. The hugest signing was that of Russian glamour girl, Anna Kournikova. Sadly, Boris Becker and Nicolas Kiefer were unable to partner Graf due to their commitments to playing Doha. The other possibility, Tommy Haas, crazily turned down the opportunity to play alongside Graf in her last fling with international competition. Then Monica Seles withdrew due to shin splints. Her intended partner, Jan-Michael Gambill, subsequently also withdrew due to injury. No Russian man was able to be found in time for Kournikova, as Safin and Kafelnikov were both due to play in Doha. Those withdrawals meant that the 2000 event was officially the most under-represented tournament in its 16-year history.

Interesting Fact:

From 1989 to 1992, Czechoslovakia did not lose a single mixed doubles rubber. The common denominator in most of those victories was Helena Sukova, who partnered Miloslav Mecir to victory in 1989, Petr Korda to a SF in 1990, and Karel Novacek to the Final in 1992. The other contributions came in 1991 when Petr Korda teamed up with future wife, Regina Rajchrtova, to record two MXD wins. The MXD wins stopped when Czechoslovakia divided and became Czech Republic and Slovak Republic. Representing Czech Republic, Jana Novotna and Petr Korda continued the trend of MXD wins until 1994 when they lost the dead doubles rubber in the Final of that year.

Despite fielding 19 different players, France has never won the HC. The nation came closest in 1998 when Mary Pierce and Cedric Pioline went down to qualifiers Slovak Republic in the mixed doubles rubber of the Final.

Amanda Coetzer of South Africa hold the record for most number of HC's played: 9. She also holds the record for most number of consecutive HC's contested: 9! She has been the sole female representative for the Republic of South Africa. Her partners have been Wayne Ferreira (93, 96, 97, 98, 99, 00, 01), Marcos Ondruska (94) and Christo Van Rensburg (95). South Africa recorded their only victory in 2000. They were also Finalists in 1997, going down gallantly in the third set to the USA in the mixed doubles rubber.

The AUSSIE Campaign:

Australia has been represented by 8 male players (Pat Cash, Mark Woodforde, Todd Woodbridge, Wally Masur, Mark Philippoussis, Patrick Rafter, Lleyton Hewitt, Richard Fromberg) and 8 female players (Hana Mandlikova, Elizabeth Smylie, Rachel McQuillan, Nicole Bradtke (nee Provis), Kristine Radford, Nicole Pratt, Jelena Dokic, Alicia Molik).

The sole Australian victory came in 1999 when teen sensation, Jelena Dokic, partnered Mark Philippoussis to defeat Sweden in the final (and Spain and France in round robin competition). At the time, Dokic was World Junior Champion and ranked a lowly 349th. She nervously succumbed to Amanda Coetzer (RSA) in her first match, but re-emerged to batter World #4 Arantxa Sanchez Vicario (ESP), World # 14 Sandrine Testud (FRA) and World Top 100 Asa Carlsson (SWE) all in straight sets.

Australia were also losing Finalists in 1989 (Hana Mandlikova, Pat Cash), losing to top seeds Czechoslovakia, and in 2003 (Alicia Molik, Lleyton Hewitt), losing to top seeds USA. Australia was seeded 2 on both occasions.

Alicia Molik and Nicole Bradtke have both represented Australia the most number of times out of the women: 4. Molik can break that record if she returns in 2006. Mark Philippoussis leads the men with 5 appearances.

1989, 1991 and 1995 representative, Pat Cash, was a co-founder of the Hopman Cup, alongside Paul McNamee and Charlie Fancutt. They conceived the idea and named the event after the legendary Davis Cup captain, Harry Hopman. At one time or another, all three had attended Hopman's Academy in Saddlebrook, Florida, USA.

Serbia will almost certainly play qualifying (largely due to Djokovic's much-lower ranking) against a token crap team unless the standard of the field is lower this year.

I like your line-up, Naomi. I wouldn't mind it at all if it were to be announced like that tomorrow. :) I would only swap Lindsay with Serena, Venus or Jennifer.

I'd like to see France too. I guess Mary Pierce is the favourite to play, being twice a Slam finalist this year and was a former finalist at HC 1998 - she's also a Mixed Doubles Grand Slam champion this year (Wimbledon). Mauresmo is the logical choice, given that she's the highest-ranked Frenchwoman but she favoured Hong Kong over Perth this year. Dechy is a possibility but usually plays Gold Coast, plus her profile isn't quite so glittering. Golovin has SF Gold Coast points to defend, but players have been known to put national pride ahead of ranking points before. Dominik did it this year instead of defending Adelaide, and Ai Sugiyama once dropped her Gold Coast SF points in order to play a qualifying tie for Japan.

I'd still like to see Golovin and Gasquet. Somehow, Pierce and Gasquet, Mauresmo and Gasquet, or Dechy and Gasquet doesn't have quite the same ring.

Serbia and Montenegro WILL play in January. I'm so happy for them cant wait to see Ana and Novak, and without being biased I think that they can win the thing, because I dont see Ana Ivanovic loosing to the usual hopman cup players like Molik, Myskina, Hantuchova, Ana can easily over some them, it may be hard for Novak but I'm sure he will do great in his singles. Then in the mixed Ana and Novak will just ace the opponents of court cos they both have massive serves. ( In her only mixed doubles match Ana aced Mirny twice and returned three winners from his serve, hahah). I cant wait to see them in Perth @ my favourite tournament.

I think the organisers should have invited Israel - Andy Ram and Shahar Peer or India - Mirza and Bhupathi.
I hope Vaidisova is invited.

and no I dont wonna see friggin germany, italy, argentina again they had their go and sucked so next country please...

~|Naomi|~
Sep 16th, 2005, 02:07 AM
How exactly did Argentina suck? they were in the final, that is not sucking. And Germany could have maybe even won if Tommy hadn't been injured. But I agree about Italy they haven't done much.

Serbia are a good team, but there is bound to be a top 10 player in the women's event partnered with a stronger male player, maybe Lindsay or Kim who like to play there but we will have to wait till it is announced. So I think it will be tough for them to win. I'd like to see them do that though as I like Ana. Ana maybe would beat Daniela in singles but Dominik would win his match and Daniela didn't just win two mixed slams for no reason, on paper there will be stronger teams than Slovakia but I wouldn't count them out.

Australia vs Serbia would be interesting, both teams will have much stronger female players than male players.

Is serbia in the main draw or quallies? I know last year it was announced Golovin was coming and then it turned out only in quallies although she didn't end up playing anyway.

I like your line-up, Naomi. I wouldn't mind it at all if it were to be announced like that tomorrow. :) I would only swap Lindsay with Serena, Venus or Jennifer.

Well we can negotiate that;) Shall I send it off to the organisers and tell em they better have this line up:devil: If I had to add one more so there could be a qualifying tie, I think it'd be the Czech Republic with Vaidisova and some random guy, actually that would be a nice quallifying tie with Serbia, Ana vs Nicole:worship:

Kim better be here:devil:

I reckon there could be a Finish team- Nieminen/Laine-maybe in qualies

As much as I would love to see a Luxembourg team, I don't hink Schal or Kremer's form of late could see them team up with Mr Muller.

I would love to see some stars come out:
at least 2 of these combo's would be great
France- Maruesmo/Gasquet
USA Roddick/ Williams
Bel- Clijsters -Rochus
Russia Safin-Demintieva (given Sharpova is in Gold COast and Petrova will probably defend her play there too)
Sui- Federer-Patty (unlikely as Patty will be i Gold Coast)
Spain-Nadal-Medina
Argentina Gaudio-Dulko
Aust- ????? Molik

I'd say 2 of these teams will paly
Czche Rep- Berdych/Vaidisova ?Pescke)
They Always have a Slovakia- Hrbaty/Hantuchova
Italy-Pennetta/Volandri
Germany-Haas/Groenfeld

? T Johansoon/Arvidson

I have a correction to make: USA is actually the most-represented nation at the Hopman Cup with 10 men and 10 women.

Men: John McEnroe, James Blake, Jan-Michael Gambill, Justin Gimelstob, Ivan Lendl, Richey Reneberg, David Wheaton, Derrick Rostagno, Jonathan Stark, MaliVai Washington.

Women: Pam Shriver, Chanda Rubin, Zina Garrison, Monica Seles, Lindsay Davenport, Serena Williams, Mary Joe Fernandez, Alexandra Stevenson, Amy Frazier, Meghann Shaughnessy.

USA is also the nation that has made the second-most number of appearances at the tournament. The USA has not missed an event since 1989 when it missed out on fielding a team in the inaugural year.

France is thus second with 19 different representatives over 16 years.

For the first seven consecutive years, Australia, Czechoslovakia (Czech Republic) and France were represented in each year's competition. The run ended in 1996 when the format was changed to a round robin event and the Czech Republic were overlooked.

2004 - Slovak Republic (Karol Kucera, Daniela Hantuchova)
2005 - Argentina (Guillermo Coria, Gisela Dulko)

Only 10 of those players have gone on to win, or had already won, the title - Sukova, Sanchez, Sanchez Vicario, Seles, Hantuchova, Kucera, Ferreira, Coetzer, Huber and Hingis.

Eight of those players were one-time only participants - McEnroe, Shriver, Wheaton, Garrison, Karbacher, Novacek, Coria and Dulko. The Argentine duo may yet pay more visits to Perth.

Out of all those players, only 2 played left-handed: John McEnroe and Monica Seles.

The Champions are usually given more attention for winning, so here's a rundown of the runner-up nations from each year:

1997 - South Africa (Wayne Ferreira, Amanda Coetzer)

When Serena played here in 2003, the rumour going around was that Venus and Richard were also in Perth and holed up in a hotel room. There was this tall, black woman with an American accent watching the tournament and the old people naturally assumed that it was Venus. Never mind that she looked NOTHING like Venus and had hips wide enough for Venus to hide behind them. She wasn't fat, but she was definitely a big-boned woman. They see a seemingly muscular, black woman and they naturally assume it's Venus!? WT...!?

The woman was later taking photos with some friends down next to the court for memories and the old people thought they were autograph hunters or fans looking for a keepsake from Venus. I so wanted to tell them that it was NOT Venus, but then the old Grandma type told her Grandson type to "go get Venus' autograph." I wanted to cack myself laughing. The Grandson type said he wanted to get his face painted instead. So Grandma type goes and asks the black woman with the American accent for an autograph. The woman smiles sweetly at her but politely informs her that she's not Venus. It was as though she'd been telling people that all day. LOL. Some people are so clueless and willing to embarrass themselves at any lengths. ;)

FACT: 3 out of the 4 Swiss HC Champions were not born in Switzerland. Jakob Hlasek was a Czech, born in Prague; Martina Hingis was a Slovak, born in Kosice; Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere was born in Sofia, Bulgaria but became a Swiss citizen by marriage to husband Francois Fragniere. The only exception was Roger Federer, but even he has South African parents. Correct me if he was actually born in South Africa and not Switzerland. I'm having doubts about his place of birth now.

FACT: Australia's female HC champion, Jelena Dokic, was born in Osejik in Croatia and grew up in Belgrade, Serbia before immigrating to Melbourne, Australia when she was 12. She's not the only representative to not be born in Australia either. 1989 finalist, Hana Mandlikova played for Czechoslovakia during her career but became an Australian citizen when she married an Aussie man in 1987. Representative with non-Western backgrounds include Mark Philippoussis (Greek/Italian) and Alicia Molik (Polish).

I don't mind working with kids actually. I used to HATE kids with a passion but since starting the coaching job, I've found them to be mostly okay. It doesn't hurt that the girls have little crushes on me and the boys think I'm cool.

What's the atmosphere like Melbourne with no Victorian team in the AFL Final?

And yeah, as if Misa's gonna send me to some psycho to kill me. She's an  She wouldn't do something like that! :p

 Navigational skills, woman! What's wrong with you? It's only 10kms! Nice day for a brisk jog. Come on. Put some muscle into it! It was only a 12 kilo back pack. People are so soft these days... :p ;) LOL

Lucky her friend was a good driver then and that you made it back in one piece. ;) All psycho serial killers named Freddy use  to lure their victims, you know. ;) Stranger danger, babe, stranger danger. Dat's all a'm sayin'. ;) LOL.

I learnt that Krajicek means "slices of bread" :haha: umm I learnt that Misa's a normal 16 year old wanting Macca's! :haha: (her friend told her she wasn't getitng it! ;) ). And she doesn't like veggies too much! ;) Mostly they were talking in Dutch (which I could understand anyway) about what they were gonna have for dinner... ;) So...Misa eats alot of Chinese in Prague and she doesn't like steak so much... ;) hmm her friend was showing me some "landmarks" in Amsterdam (although I'd been there 4 times already so she really didn't need to). And they asked me how come i cheer for the Dutchies and stuff...and I think Misa likes Pieter vd Hoogenband...coz when I said I like swimming, the first thing she asked was "oohhh...so you like Pieter vd Hoogenband?"! ;) Hmm we also talked about the Dutch prime minister looking like Harry Potter and about the American embassy in A'dam being a terrorist target (well her friend was telling me that they wanna move the building because of this)...and so I said about Canberra and the Indonesian embassy (coz this was right after Schapelle got sentenced and they were having the trouble there) being a target at the moment...but then I jokingly said "Hmm, but it's in Canberra, they can bomb Canberra"... Misa was like "Hey! I've been there" So i told her I go there at least once every year!

err think that's about it... :D

That's a lot of cool stuff there. I met Roger Federer once and asked him to take a picture with me but we never spoke in any length apart from hello and thank you. I did accidentally grab his butt while taking the photo (i love telling that story!) so I guess there's a certain level of intimacy between us. ;) It was only fair since he grabbed me into a hug first (for the photo) and made me feel really awkward. He coulda at least bought me dinner first. :o Macca's maybe. ;)

Krajicek = "Slices of Bread"? That's just begging for a bread-related nickname.

Did you keep in contact with her after that?

I saw her about a week after at Rosmalen, she said hi and asked did I find my hotel OK (they dropped me off on a bridge, and I had to walk into the park - but yeah it was only like 20 m away! ;) ). But since then I didn't see her - but hopefully I can when she comes to Australia again! :D I didn't ask for her e-mail address or anything - I don't wanna bother her, and she writes messages (in Dutch) for a couple of her Dutch websites already, and i know some friends of her family, and they also send me updates, so it's enough. :D

:haha: Yeah I had read somewhere else your story about Roger! ;) :hearts: Mirka watch out! ;)

Get those friends of her family to pass on your e-mail addy or mobile number to her. That way, if she doesn't want to contact you, she doesn't have to, but if she does, then you could be on your way to making a new friend. What have you got to lose? She'd probably enjoy someone showing her around Melbourne to repay the kindness of Amsterdam. How sweet would that be? :)

* Hingis and Federer edge out Hlasek and Maleeva-Fragniere largely due to Hingis' undefeated singles record at the tournament, Hingis and Federer's Grand Slam tally and their highest career singles rankings being No. 1. Hlasek would edge out Federer in terms of doubles achievements but Federer is simply too good right now to be left out for that sole reason.

* Switzerland edge out Germany for the top seeding due to Federer. Hingis has a vastly greater doubles experience and expertise than Graf, but she trumps Hingis in every other department. However, the might and silky skills of Federer could be too much for the Germans to handle, especially with a doubles Queen like Hingis by his side.

* Williams edges out Davenport because she presents a far better prospect if it should come down to any mixed doubles rubbers. Also, her 7 Grand Slam titles speak for itself. Blake cemented his position with back-to-back Hopman Cup co-championships.

* Sanchez Vicario and Sanchez are Spain's most winningest representatives with Sanchez Vicario triumphing twice.

* Novotna edges out Helena Sukova by a whisker. While it's true that Sukova has made one more final than Novotna, it's Novotna's better singles prowess that wins it for her. The Wimbledon victory and her highest career singles ranking of No. 2 also adds to Novotna's argument. In doubles, they are virtually inseparable. Sukova has never played under the Czech Republic flag.

* Korda edges out the only other possible representative, Miloslav Mecir, by virtue of Mecir being a Slovak when he played and won with Sukova for Czechoslovakia.

* Hantuchova edges out Karina Habsudova for having made two Hopman Cup finals. Kucera edges out Dominik Hrbaty for the same reason. Hantuchova and Kucera also have better records at the Hopman Cup and better individual highest career singles rankings. Kucera als perhaps performs better than Hrbaty in doubles.

* Molik is the only All-Star not to hold aloft the Hopman Cup trophy but goes ahead of Jelena Dokic due to Dokic no longer representing Australia in international competition. Molik is also Australia's most winningest female player at the tournament.

* Philippoussis earns his position by being a former champion.

* South Africa is edged out of the main draw by Australia for having made only 2 finals compared with Australia's three.

* Croatia edges out Yugoslavia for the final qualifying spot due to their better record at the tournament. Alongside their championship win, Croatia also finished second in their Group A pool the following year that they won. Yugoslavia managed two first round losses previously to winning the title.

It's sad not to have Monica Seles represented somewhere because she did so well at the Hopman Cup but had she won with the USA, she would automatically depose Serena Wiliams from the US line-up.
