French Federation President said today that the final will finally take place on center court due to the huge interest of french people in tennis this year.

He also said that it's to congratulate french girls who reached semi finals in all the Grand Slam of the year 2005 :) !!!!!

The french team is very clear, but the russian team- this is the great question. It seems that Anastasia and Lena will be there becausr they are the leading figures in the fed cup this year. The question is if Kuznetsova and Petrova (or Bovina or Zvoraneva or Likhovtseva or Safina....) will be there. Sharapova won't be there.

Though Paris has always been good for Russian tennis. We got the first Grand Slam there. The first women's Grand Slam. The first Davis Cup. Safin owns Bercy. I don't think we have ever lost anything of significance in Paris..:)

Well, it might be even worse. She'd be playing not only for herself, but also the whole crowd watching her.

I'm a little surprised that they're picking clay actually. I think they would dominate more on grass. (I honestly don't see Sharapova playing for Russia)

But maybe they just wanted a surface they'd be more comfortable on, even if it helps the other team.

I am so happy for the French team.

I hope they will win fed cup this year 5-0! Mary Pierce and Amelie can do that! Russian team, without Maria Sharapova, has little chance against France. They won tight last year even France sent the 2nd division there!

If it's M. Pierce and A. Mauresmo this year, Russia will have very very little chance!! ALLEZ!!! :bounce:

I don't think Amélie is going to flake playing fed cup it is hardly the same as trying to win RG.
She hasn't lost a fed cup match since 2002 but she has had a couple of close fed cup match's against nastya and Lena D so should be interesting especially on clay.

It will be interesting to see how Amelie responds to the situation. Mary Pierce will be fine. I guess Nathalie Dechy & Tatiana Golovin will be the other two French players though both Bartoli & Loit are quite useful in doubles.

I think the Russians will go with Myskina, Dementieva, Zvonareva & Likhovtseva.

Good! I'm happy with both the date and the venue. Fed Cup needs to be played in great arenas so that gains more visibility and prestige. Bringing it forward to September is also a way to reduce the chances of top stars refusing to play because it would prolong their season.

Amelie has been the backbone of the French team for a few years now. She has pretty much been expected to win her two matches and Mary has been sent out and asked to win one of hers. Its been a really successful team with Amelie being used as the consistent, reliable player and Mary as a "super sub" almost.

But that was a different Mary in 2003/04. I see her having more pressure on her in the final this time round, she excels at Roland Garros and her form is better now than its been in years. I think Mary will have more of a leading role in the final.

Amelie will flake...
Pierce will flourish...
I don't think that will necessarily happen for Amelie. For a start she is not alone - it's a team effort and a team atmosphere so the pressure not just on her as it is in her singles match at the French Open. Also Guy Forget will be on the bench with her throughout the matches so if she does start to feel the pressure I am sure he will help her all he can and encourage her and that might just what she needs.

The French were nearly unbeatable last years when with Amelie.. Just a reminder, Russians beat the French last year when the French had no Amelie in the team. It's going to be tough. And mental fragility of Amelie could be really helped by allowed coaching. Dementieva did beat her in 2001 though.

No Amélie Mauresmo indeed, and no Mary Pierce 2005 version neither ;).

I don't think Amelie will 'choke' the pressure at the French is that she has never won a FO (or any slam) title yet. She already has a fed cup title in the bag. It was the same for the Russians last year, it wasn't the French B team that nearly beat them last year it was the pressure of going for that first title (the nerves seemed to hit Svetlana, although Golovin/Dechy did play well against her and I thought Forget was immense in his role).

I think the home advantage is always a double edge sword. The crowd can inspire a player/team but it can also add pressure and make occasions very tense. You could really feel the tension at last years final (although the fact everyone expected russia to win didn't help - this time it will be a lot closer, and should make for a great atmostphere).

The key thing is that both teams are able to field strong sides. I don't doubt France will (being at home) and Russia would struggle not to field a strong team.

I'll be routing for Russia, but I also think the French are great side.
It should be a great final between to really strong teams.

Jul 12th, 2005, 01:24 AM
Amélie has excelled in Fed Cup moreso than in slams. I don't think that playing in RG will rattle her as much as playing the FO. And, like a lot of you have said, she'll have a whole "team" on court with her. :)

Damn, I wish I could go :( - should be a great final! :D

Remember last year amelie didn't play coz she wanted to prepare for the AO? It is not a given thatfrance will win, dementieva is very good on claty and amelie's game seems to suit her coz she can run everything down. Myskina rises for the russian team everytime. Amelie and mary will have to be at their absolute best, either way it should be fantastic tennis.

Amelie Mauresmo may not have the most enviable record on the red clay of Roland Garros, but she is still relishing the prospect of playing for France in the Fed Cup final at the grand slam venue.

The 26-year-old, who is currently ranked third in the world, has never made it past the quarter-finals of the French Open and stumbled in the third round of this year's event, falling victim to rising talent Ana Ivanovic.

However, Mauresmo is confident she can find some form at Roland Garros during the Fed Cup showdown against Russia on September 17 and 18, especially with George Goven the captain of the French team.

"Having George on the chair will help," said Mauresmo, who has often been accused of crumbling under the pressure on her home patch.

"I hope we will all manage to tame centre court Philippe Chatrier.

"Having someone on the chair is always reassuring in times where you lack awareness. It helps put you back into place."

Goven is also convinced Mauresmo will be able to cope with the mental strain.

"Amelie was exceptional two years ago during our win and I think she will be the same at Roland Garros," he added.

"She likes team matches and she will also have a captain on the chair to support her when she doubts."

France will star in the Fed Cup final for the third year in succession having won the competition in 2003 against the United States before losing out to the Russians last season.

Mauresmo is now eager to exact some revenge for that defeat although she believes France will not be the favourites, even on home soil.

"We really wanted to play that final at home," she added.

"We have been regular at the highest level for a few years and it proves we are a nation of tennis and that tennis in France is going very well.

"This final is a reward for all the efforts we have put in during this competition.

"The good thing this time is that we will receive the Russians at home and we will rely on the public to help us lift the trophy.

"We are expecting a huge challenge. Maybe we are not the favourites but we must believe in our chances to fulfil our dream."

Mauresmo, Mary Pierce, who reached the French Open final in June, and Severine Beltrame all played their part in France's victory over Spain at the weekend while Russia defeated the United States in the other semi.

Oh my...this will be such a cool final!

With the crowd and two players who really want to show off their abilities: Momo´s "fear" of her own fear and Nastya who must feel like she´s been given a second chance to step on Chatrier again after that dreadful loss at the FO.
