Good win for Venus. Too bad she and Corina lost in doubles. I'll tell you what he/she said yesterday. This person said that Venus could go into a slump because of this. Well, I guess the slump ended. igost Jul 10th, 2005, 03:30 PM Thank you Venus, for trying. Unfortunately, can't do it alone. BTW, shows you once again who's real #1 in Russia K-Dog Jul 10th, 2005, 04:16 PM I am happy that Venus absolutely dominated today in singles. It was hard for me on Saturday morning in San Diego's airport to see on my cell that Venus lost to Myskina. Zina must have seen tapes last night and told Venus to stay as forward in the court as possible. Venus was attacking everything today, coming in, serving pretty well, and hugging the baseline on the defense. I think that the loss yesterday helped Venus to play her best today. Too bad that Corina had to embarrass herself and bring Venus down with her today in dubs!! Good match Venus, keep staying aggresive!! VeeReeDavJCap81 Jul 10th, 2005, 04:29 PM Venus :hearts: Paneru Jul 10th, 2005, 04:49 PM Stumbled upon a Venus fan posting her horoscope from msn for today and since it seems quiet a few are caught up in what she's wearing I thought this would be rather interesting. ;) July 10, 2005 Issues involving fashion, magazines, and the spoken or written word will all begin to take a slow turn in a positive direction today, Venus. You may find that these things have been somewhat obscured lately, or at least development in these areas has been in more of a backward rather than a forward motion. The good news is that the tide is turning, and you should notice over the next few weeks that things are getting back on track. Haute Jul 10th, 2005, 05:40 PM Go Venus! I wonder if this will go five pages?:tape: Took the words right out of my mouth. It's amazing how short these threads are when everyone isn't clammoring over each other to be the first one to declare Venus's season as dead. ;) Great win Vee! She's starting to conquer some of the demons from the past year that have kept her from beating players she should have won against. :) Knizzle Jul 10th, 2005, 06:07 PM ``It was difficult to find energy after so many weeks of playing,'' Williams said. ``I definitely was not my normal self for sure. Last night I wanted to win for the team and that was important. It's definitely hard because it's not just one person. It's a disappointment for the whole team.'' Williams saved four break points in the opening game and won four straight games in the first set against Dementieva for a 5-1 lead. In the second set, Williams jumped ahead 4-1, saved a break point while serving for match at 5-2 and won with a backhand volley. ``It was another Williams today,'' Dementieva said. ``She was playing different tennis today.'' Myskina was glad she didn't have to face Williams on Sunday. ``I think she was really hurt that she lost to me,'' Myskina said. ``Her ego was hurt and she really wanted to give a point to her team. That's why she found extra motivation.'' Volcana Jul 10th, 2005, 06:36 PM All fine and good, but we don't win Fed Cup this year. If we have to play on clay, our Fed Cup team needs to be Venus and Serena in singles and doubles. We just don't have any other elite clay courters, and they're the most accomplished American doubles team. deja_entendu Jul 10th, 2005, 06:52 PM Too bad that Corina had to embarrass herself and bring Venus down with her today in dubs!! :retard: Knizzle Jul 10th, 2005, 06:59 PM :retard: I didn't see the dubs, but I have to agree with deja here that's was a stupid thing to say. So who does this result show is the real Russian number 1? raquel Jul 10th, 2005, 09:12 PM bravo venus and myskina.....sorry for lindsay and mysterious selection of dementieva....(kuznetsova not injured, sharapova better russian on wta rankings).....is fed cup an politically correct or sportive event??? but i think that eltsine is not poutine.....what's the problem?? Svetlana has a shoulder injury. Maria, I am not sure about. There was talk about how she was back in the fold but she's on a beach somewhere so I'm assuming that was her decision and the Russian captain was OK with it (with the players Russia has, it's no surprise he was OK with it) but if Maria had made herself available and was enthusiatic about it I am sure he would have selected her. Also mysterious selection of Dementieva? She's number 5 in the world and the highest ranked player of the tie. Nothing mysterious about it IMO. Since you haven't seen them, don't comment. Corina played the worst I've ever seen her play. She was slow, lunging for volleys a step away and mishitting them, serving awful, and missing easy sitters at the net. Venus did make errors, but Corina expected Venus to carry her like Mary, Lindsay, and Patty have done for her, and Venus is used to having a great partner on her side. I'm sorry, but in my opinion Corina embarrassed herslef out there today. The supposed no. 14 doubles player in the world and Oz open finalist was the worst player on the court today. Okay, so if you want to be politically correct, yes they lost as a team. They both made errors and therefore they lost. But I was so embarrassed for Corina out there today, as well as angry with her for her performance. I'm sorry, I'm a singles guy and I have don't have nearly as much respect for doubles specialists as I do singles players. I guess I'm a little hard on them. I was just angry that Corina didn't really help Venus out there. She didn't adapt to Venus' game at all, and wasn't as pumped up or focused as Venus. I don't think Corina would've been like this if Lindsay would've played with her. Sveta has a better hardcourt record than Maria. Last year Sveta was 40-14 on hard, Maria was 34-11 but 9 of Maria's wins were in those Tier 4's she played in Asia. Maria only made one QF on the American hard court circuit in 4 tournaments and when Svetlana played Maria on hard court in China, she comfortably beat her 6-2, 6-2. Maria got her own back in the Australian Open but I would not say it's clear cut she's the best Russian on hard courts. Paneru Jul 11th, 2005, 05:42 PM Definitely have to give the overall edge to Sveta on hardcourts. She is afterall the US Open Champion. Knizzle Jul 12th, 2005, 05:03 AM Finally saw this match, it was really a workmanlike effort from Venus, nothing spectacular just putting pressure on Dementieva and Elena was inconsistent sometimes because of the pressure Venus put on her and sometimes not. Venus looked really tired on the court and seemed to only be mustering enough energy to beat Dementieva as fast as she could. | |
