Dementieva only held serve one time :tape: .........yet venus had more double faults........you can definitely tell that elena is trying to change her service motion a bit......overall not a very high quality match though......venus didnt seem to have that much energy and elena never seemed able to get things going for herself.......venus just played the better match

yeah, lena isn't a top 5 player anymore. she struggles against players like klaschka only to go out to great players like clijsters and venus 1 and 2. i know lena's a fighter so she's being completely outclassed right now.

Yeah but clay was a handicap after playing 7 straight matches on grass. She would have adapted faster if it was hardcourt. That's why it's a big deal when a women or men are able to win Rolland Garros and Wimbledon back to back!

I am happy that Venus absolutely dominated today in singles. It was hard for me on Saturday morning in San Diego's airport to see on my cell that Venus lost to Myskina. Zina must have seen tapes last night and told Venus to stay as forward in the court as possible. Venus was attacking everything today, coming in, serving pretty well, and hugging the baseline on the defense. I think that the loss yesterday helped Venus to play her best today. Too bad that Corina had to embarrass herself and bring Venus down with her today in dubs!! Good match Venus, keep staying aggresive!!

Great win Vee! She's starting to conquer some of the demons from the past year that have kept her from beating players she should have won against. :)

All fine and good, but we don't win Fed Cup this year. If we have to play on clay, our Fed Cup team needs to be Venus and Serena in singles and doubles. We just don't have any other elite clay courters, and they're the most accomplished American doubles team.

Congrats Vee. I knew my girl wouldn't go down without a fight. Myskina's right, Vee's pride was probabaly a bit bruised by her loss yesterday, and she was more determined to at least get the US on the board. Oh, well, maybe next year team USA will be comprised of our most elite players.

There was talk about how she was back in the fold but she's on a beach somewhere so I'm assuming that was her decision and the Russian captain was OK with it (with the players Russia has, it's no surprise he was OK with it) but if Maria had made herself available and was enthusiatic about it I am sure he would have selected her.

Also mysterious selection of Dementieva? She's number 5 in the world and the highest ranked player of the tie. Nothing mysterious about it IMO.

Okay, maybe I should've been nicer and more politically correct. I'm sorry, I'm a singles guy and I have don't have nearly as much respect for doubles specialists as I do singles players. I guess I'm a little hard on them. I was just angry that Corina didn't really help Venus out there. She didn't adapt to Venus' game at all, and wasn't as pumped up or focused as Venus. I don't think Corina would've been like this if Lindsay would've played with her. I know it was a dead rubber, but Venus would like to maintain her great Fed Cup record.

Of all the women on the tour I would not want to play after a big loss, VW is probably at the top of my list.

When I saw she lost to Myskina, my reactions were:

1. Crap. This is bad for the U.S. as we needed V to go 2-0.

2. But I'm happy for Myskina, she needs a quality win

Really? Sveta has a better hardcourt record than Maria. Last year Sveta was 40-14 on hard, Maria was 34-11 but 9 of Maria's wins were in those Tier 4's she played in Asia. Maria only made one QF on the American hard court circuit in 4 tournaments and when Svetlana played Maria on hard court in China, she comfortably beat her 6-2, 6-2. Maria got her own back in the Australian Open but I would not say it's clear cut she's the best Russian on hard courts.

Definitely have to give the overall
edge to Sveta on hardcourts.

She is afterall the US Open Champion.

Finally saw this match, it was really a workmanlike effort from Venus, nothing spectacular just putting pressure on Dementieva and Elena was inconsistent sometimes because of the pressure Venus put on her and sometimes not. Venus looked really tired on the court and seemed to only be mustering enough energy to beat Dementieva as fast as she could.
