View Full Version : Declare it now: Who will win US Open, YEC and finish Year-End #1?

Women's tennis has never been less predictable, so I doubt anyone is going to get all three right. But let's see what people think.

Predict now the;

US Open Winner:
YEC Winner:
Year End #1:

tennisIlove09
Jul 9th, 2005, 03:02 AM
US Open Winner: Venus (just because every year she's won Wimbledon, she's won the Open)

YEC: I have no idea...I'll wait to see who qualifes

Davenselesport
Jul 9th, 2005, 03:07 AM
US Open: Lindsay or Venus
Year end championships: Maria or Kim
Finish #1: Lindsay

USO too unpredictable
YEC we don't even know the complete list of who's going to be in it
No. 1 Lindsay (If she defends her hardcourt points)
otherwise Maria Sharapova (cuz she's got virtually nothing to defend, except the year-end cup and two low-tier tournaments after the USO. She has got 3rd round points at the USO so there's definitely gotta be an increase)
Amelie has a shot only if she does well in the hardcourt season and/or (preferably 'and') wins USO, and so does Justine
I think the Williamses will have to wait till next year... although you never know what you'll get with them... sorta like Marat Safin.
Other than those, I don't see anyone else reach No.1 by the end of this year

I'm here to proclaim it first :)

USO: Kim Clijsters

YEC: Kim Clijsters

Year End #1: Probably Lindsay, because Kim may not even reach 17 tournaments to get the full allotted points available and she's also so far behind already, therefore even with those victories (noted above) she may not acquire enough points to take that prestigious title this year.

It DOES NOT MATTER that Sharapova has fewer points than Lindsay to defend... that WILL NOT affect the outcome of the year end number one

So far Lindsay has the most points this year, so if she continues she will finish #1 again

One thing is for sure, whoever wins the USO will not win the YEC and will not end up the No.1 So far no single player has shown dominance enough to win two big titles.
USO winner will be either serena or venus
YEC has kim written all over it
year end no.1 either lindsay or maria.

US Open - someone who has not won a Slam this year yet.
YEC - Sharapova
YE #1 - Davenport - if she plays her schedule, which is not certain, as I think that her mood now could be very close to that of Steffi of 1999 after Wimbledon. W loss final is a huge blow to her motivation. I am not sure she will want to lift a racket any time soon. So Davenport if she plays, Sharapova otherwise.

So what weakness did Venus expose of Sharapova? Isn't it funny how the commentators always dole out advice on how to beat Venus and Serena, but don't say boo, about the other top players? My only observation from the match was that Maria was a mess when on the run and Venus was hitting to her backhand. It was like she was slow off the mark and had to keep hitting with one hand on the backhand side just to get a racket on the ball.

Maria has a lot of weaknesses, IMO. Venus kinda exposed a couple, but they've always been obvious:

1) Deep balls, especially to her forehand, cause her trouble. She's used to being the one dictating and hitting deep and receiving shorter responses. Make it a hitting match.

2) Run her around and wrongfoot her. Hitting down the middle to her will get you into trouble. Utilize the shorter crosscourt angles and then hit deep.

3) If you can get to net, hit a drop volley and the point will be yours. Hit a decent drop shot and follow it up to net and the point is yours. Bring her inside the service line with a LOW ball and the point is yours. She's lost at the net.

None the less, that's not what this topic is about:

US Open: Likely to be Maria or Lindsay, but like someone else said, Venus has won it every year that she's won Wimbledon. Venus hasn't been too great on hardcourts lately, so that's why I'm leaning towards Lindsay or Sharapova. Serena won't have enough match play to really compete there.

YEC: Maria Sharapova

Number one: If Sharapova wins US and YEC, not to mention titles in between, she'll take over number one. It's likely that she will take over the spot, as Lindsay's injury may prevent her from playing as often/as good.

Venus' efforts on hard are not going to be the same after the fact that she won Wimbledon. There is new life to Venus now. Venus made the finals of Stanford losing to Lindsay 7-6 5-7 7-6, semi in LA, rd of 16 at US, rd of 16 at Oz, finals at Antrewp, semis at Miami. Those results aren't too bad. Not to mention, she will be more confident and aggressive after Wimbledon.

what a dumb comment. The same can be said of lindsay:
won the us open in the past (made the final 1 other time)
won the year end championships and made the final 3 other times
has finished the year #1 before (3 times) including last year!
The past has nothing to do with it. After her showing at wimby, i would be surprised if she even CAME CLOSE to doing any of the 3!

ok

1) why do all these damn threads somehow go over in steffi graf? its getting really boring
2) How can someone say lindsay will be #1 at the end of the year? she has to defend all those points this summer, how is she ever going to do that?:S
3) kim clijsters winning a grandslam? i hope it a lot but somehow she always finds a way to screw things up she's had such great chances and that has inpact. would be great if she won usopen but dont think it is going to happen this year.
4) the order is going to be restored now, the russianplayground has closed down and the reign of the belgiums and williams will be restored we saw it the whole year and we will see it this summer again. JHH and KC are back and gonna take there points back justine whole gravelseason undefeated and kim won miami and IW back-to-back this is just the beginning
I have the feeling usopen is gonna be belgian again, also looking really!!! forward too their first meeting this year  thats gonna be soooo good.

well lets put the names in order now^^

usopen- Justine henin-hardenne
yec- Kim Clijsters
#1 Sharapova or Justine going for justine more

well, am curious how far maria is gonna go at usopen but dont think she's gonna win it. Lindsay will get far and i wouldnt mind if she won it but she failed twice now to make the final step. so her confidence must be a bit down

Sorry, Justine is not going to win the U.S. open with Venus and Serena playing, both of whom own her on hardcourts and faster surfaces. I don't even see her getting past either Davenport and Sharapova on hardcourts. She will probably have to get through one or two of these strong favorites. Of these big four, the chances of winning U.S. Open imo are in order:
Venus (if she maintains Wimbie form)
Davenport (if she recovers from strain and bruised ego)
Serena (if she gets into shape)
Sharapova (if she doesn't have to meet any of the other three when they're on!)
We will see what the hardcover season presents.

serenafan08

US Open - These are my five probable picks: Serena, Venus, Lindsay, Maria, or Kim. I think one of those five will win it. I don't think Justine will win because Serena and Venus have her number on hardcourts. She's only beaten them on clay, and this ain't it. If she doesn't have to play one of them she has a great shot, but if she runs into one of them she's history.

YEC - I think Kim, Serena or Maria will come out on top here. Serena has been in the finals of this tournament ever time she's played it, and she likes the Staples Center, so I predict that she'll get to the finals. Kim has won it twice, and she can beat anybody. Maria is good indoors. One of those three will take it.

Number 1 - Lindsay will finish this year ranked on top. I just don't think that Maria can overtake her because it seems like she can't deal with the pressure all that well. Maria had chances to take over number one during the clay court season and failed to win any of the clinching matches. Maria has cracked under pressure this whole year, and she hasn't shown signs of snapping out of it yet. Lindsay knows how to handle the pressure and play with it, so I'm picking her to finish the year ranked number one.

US Open: Justine (normally rebounds VERY strong) or Venus, who may carry the momentum from London (although that loss to Myskina even though in Fed Cup and on clay could cool her down). I would not count out Serena Williams too. I'd put my money on any of the last 3 Slam Winners...the rest are just pretenders until they prove themselves.

Year End Championships: Clijsters or Sharapova

Year End #1: Maria Sharapova

Serena Williams is the unknown quantity. *

I think that Lindsay will end year as #1 unless Justine or Amelie wins the USO.

I think that Maria will end year as #1 if she wins USO, but is unlikey to if she doesn't, even if she wins YEC.

Amelie could reach year end #1 with very good if unspectacular results depending on Lindsay's back/Justine's fitness/Maria's form/Venus' form.

Kim or Amelie may win the USO, but this is less likely than Nastya, Sveta or Maria. This is less likely than Justine, Venus or Lindsay . Amelie would probably also be #1 if she wins USO. But this is unlikely.

If Venus or Justine did win the USO, they'd be my favourite for the year end #1, regardless of what anyone else did.

YEC is likely to be the usual suspects: Maria, Kim or Lindsay, [/B] but Justine has a shot even though her record indoors isn't great. Nastya also has a good shot but hasn't won a title this year yet.

*as is everyone else not mentioned thus far!
