do you think it was really that good a match????....both players struggled with nerves...and lindsay became so injured she couldnt run in the third set......i think venus surprised herself with her win....like it wasnt vintage venus of years ago thats for sure.....apart from sharapova theres no others coming through.....

What are you saying? Did you watch the match?

Lindsay couldn't run in the third? She couldn't run in the first and second, then? The back hurt her for like two or three points. Other than that, the best rallies came AFTER she was injured.

Two- these tough, long, Wimbledon finals between two American greats can never hurt the WTA. People that aren't interested in tennis heard something about this match and that is gaining the tour good publicity.

"Vintage Venus" made an appearance though here and there in that final when she needed to ;), i.e - THAT cool as a cucumber shot Vee played to save the mp against her and that game in the second set where she broke Lindsay when she was serving for the match :) I agree that this match was just the tonic that the wta needed with two veterans ( yes Vee can almost certainly be called a vet these days at the ripe old age of 25;) ) battling it out again like the good old days. Actually this year has been very healthy for the tour with the rise of the veterans dominating the grand slams again. :bounce:

Anything to try and slight

Also, a person obvious bitterness that
Maria wasn't in the final.

And you have? All this thread is good for is slamming two great players like Davenport and Venus.

The first set was not great by any means but the second and third definitely were. What happened when Davenport tired to serve out the match at 6-5 in the second? Venus blasted winners everywhere to break her at love. What happened when Davenport had match point against Venus? Another winner. That's high quality, under great pressure to say the least, whether you like Venus or not.

Oh my gawd.

1) The fact that you posted this thread tells me that you really feel that it was a great match between two great past champs looking for another grandslam.

2) You are trying to insult V@Linds by saying that they played a poor match. When the facts are the match went to three sets with them both aiming for the lines. Somebody had to lose it though.

3) Jelena Dokic is a known tanker, bless her heart and frankly if anything is bad for he WTA it is a damn tanker.

4) Stop trying to diss the #1 player and her skills and Venus's skills when you are sitting there mentioning nothing about Jelena's lack of effort.

The match was exactly what women's tennis needed. Two great champions going to points doubters said they couldn't, proving people wrong, showing heart, determination and at certain points awesome play that truly spoke at who Lindsay and Venus were as tennis players and competitors. No matter the winner, the story would have been a well written, and told one. The match between Venus and Lindsay was exactly what the WTA needed. I am glad these two women produced it.

welcome to wtaworld - here, people like to bitch (about anything)
please fasten your seatbelts.

I think Ivanovic VS vaidisova would have been better for the WTAtour, but i hate the WTAtour because it's comprosed of people that don't care for tennis or tennis players, but only of $$$$$$$$$$$$$.
two #1s, two GS winners, two Wimbledon winners, two Americans - i think it's great for the sport.
i'd much rather watch others, but that's just me - the sport needs these kind of thing every now and then.

She has wasted all her pontential and now a former top ten player is nothing but a waste of a wildcard.

She plays terribly. Hasn't done anything of note except have the fastest tumble from the top ten EVER.

Thats notable, right?

It's quite obvious to most people the match wasn't top quality for 80% of the time.

I don't know why some people are so defensive about it.

People are not "defensive" about it. We are saying its just plan WRONG. The tennis comemtators at the time said it was a wonderful match....all the headline stories from the tennis media after said it was a "match for the ages". ESPN says it was an "instant" classic; but most impartant, I SAW the match, and it was cetainly "top quality" by any resonable standard. Far and away the best GS final of the year so far.

I
