View Full Version : Why don't we see more of Maria Kirilenko? The WTA is squandering a real opportunity

Why does Little Masha always get lost in the mix amongst the talk/viewership of WTA tennis? And why can I never find her matches on tv? I don't have the tennis channel here in the U.S. so maybe I am missing her tournaments she plays in they do televise. She is a top 50 player, awesome at doubles, and she is the best looking women's player by a long shot. She is probably the prettiest girl in the history of tennis. Yet, we never get to see her matches, once again ESPN showed zilch of Little Masha during Wimbledon, French Open, Australian Open. It's pissing me off because the WTA needs to promote her better and showcase her more.

She needs to win more matches before they show her on tv. The priority is always to show top players because they have more fans. And if they show lower ranked players, there are lots more besides Maria.

I would rather see a Maria Kirilenko first or second round close loss in singles than watch Lyndsey or Venus in a 1st round blowout and 90 percent of tennis fans would agree with me. I mean come on, we never get to see her matches, I don't care if she loses, put her matches on television anyways. No one ever cared that Anna K didnt win either and Little Masha is preferable because she is sweet and doesn't have the Kournikova bitchiness factor. WE WANT MORE MARIA KIRILENKO DAMNIT!!!!

Well first of all, the WTA has nothing to do with ESPN not showing her enough. Secondly, she has to show that she can win consistently for them to show her. If she makes it to the quarters of a slam, THEN they'll probably consider it. But even then, she'll probably be lost to the likes of Maria, Venus, Serena, and the stars on the men's side too. That's why I get so pissed when they don't show Justine either, and she's a GS champ! :fiery:

I understand what you want but they're many others good and pretty players ranked higher then Maria and their matchs are never on TV except when they play bigs names... And everybody wants their player on TV :)

So when she will be solid top 15, she will have a chance but ESPN show only Americans and men before women like in 1st day in Wimbledon, they're was like 3 matchs in progress at the end and they prefer show Hernych vs Blake on court 17 then Dementieva(6) vs Benesova :o

I would love to see Maria K play more often also, but like it has been mentioned earlier she need to get her ranking up. Or play more often in the final rounds. Or to win one big tournament. There are quite a many beautiful players, but not that many top players (and very few beautiful top players). I don't have any idea whether Maria K has a personality that would warrant more publicity.

Hello ? Reality Check ?

AnnaK reached 4th Rd Us-Open 1995 in her Grand Slam debut as qualifier to lose to Steffi Graf.

AnnaK advanced to Wimbledon Semifinal in 1997 in her All England Club debut.

AnnaK beat 4 Top-10 players on four consecutive days in consecutive matches in Key Biscayne 1998 on her way to the final.

AnnaK beat No.1 at that time, Martina Hingis, in Berlin 1998.

AnnaK beat Steffi Graf on grass in Eastbourne 1998 quarterfinal.

AnnaK reached Top-10 for first time in June 1998.

AnnaK reached 4 singles finals in WTA Tour events, among them 3 Tier-I category tournaments, scored 1 GS semifinal, 1 GS quarterfinal and numerous 4th Rd results in Grand Slams, beat numerous Top-10 players in her career in singles.

AnnaK scored 16 doubles titles in her career on all surfaces with 6 different partners, including 2 Grand Slams and 2 WTA Championships.

Feel free to list Kirilenko's tennis vita - don't get me wrong: I do prefer Kirilenko's game style over the majority of nowadays players by far and Top-50 player IS an achievement.
BUT at this stage Kirilenko is not in Kournikova's leage BY FAR, she has a long road to go.

Makiri is a TOTAL BABE!!!She's waaay hotter than Maria S.,but if we're going to see more of Makiri she has to get her ranking up.There are a lot of good looking players (though i do agree there are very few of them in the top 20;) ) I love lil masha's style of tennis but she is going to struggle with the power hitters. Its all about the power nowadays:(

Have you ever met her in person? I have and ,frankly, I didn't see much of that sugary part you talk about.
About tv exposure, if you are talking USA, then forget it. Americans have priority regardless of rank. Only if she climbs to the top a la Sharapova she has a chance at a larger exposure. So stop dreaming.
Finally, although I think, bacause I've seen her played live many times, that she is a naturally talented player, she has also a natural disadvantage: that of size, she is of a very slight build. I talked to her coach abouit that three years ago, and she agreed. She was hoping she'd muscle up soon\ but that hasn't happened. First time I saw her playing, at the finals of the Bronx Classic in 03,Jie Zheng who is only 5' 2",but muscular almost blew her away off the court.I like her very much ,although she is not as gracious in person as you think, and that she finds a solution a la Henin.

let me get this straight.... you want them to show her because she's hot, yes she's talented but more importantly she's hot, and therefore should be showcased above higher ranked/ more accomplished less attractive players.... hmm so much for appreciating women for more than their looks :retard:
wait for her to win a few more big matches and i'm sure you'll get your "hot babe" fix soon enough

Chriskip

Whats so hot about this girl? I mean there are so many more beautiful players out there on tour than she is. And what does looks have to do with this anyway. A lot of players would maybe try to get by on their looks, but they know all too well that that doesnt cut it. The WTA and ESPN owes her nothing. She has to work for her day in the sun just like anyone else.
Funny, ever since this girl put up a challenge against Serena in one of the Slams some persons think she has reached. Its the age old myth....you just have to get a couple games off some of the top players and then you become a star....lol.
With all credit she has fought to get her rankings up this year, but consistency is what counts. She is young though. Maybe one of these days she will give her sometimes doubles partner a run for her money.....in her game that is...because the more popular one really has nothing over her in looks I think.

She's a good looking girl but you've got to play well at slams aswell. Maria Sharapova had to win wimbledon before she got attention, Anna Kournikova had to get into the top 10 and get to the quarters and semis at slams, Daniela Hantuchova and Elena Dementieva also had to reach top ten and do well in slams.

"pretty good" is all relative i guess. i just think she wont have the success of the other Ruskis such as Dementieva, Myskina, Kuznetsova and Sharapova especially :).
re. Kournikova. how unnecessary.

Whores don't just sell sex. Anyone (individual or company) "putting something ova" on ppl for money IMO is a whore (or a group of them). The fact that sexual fantasies are sold here is mostly coincidence. But lets take a companion issue.

There are ppl in this world who love eachother but can't get married. It may be because they're of the same gender, different religions, different castes, different clans, etc. etc. depending on where they live. I think they should be able to.

Anna faced no such obstacles when she married hockey star Sergei Federov a few years ago. But she LATER said in interviews that she was saving sex for marriage, clearly saying that she wasn't yet. (Octagon felt it would hurt sales of her image).

Why would it? Because they were selling a fantasy, mostly to males probably between 11 and 23. And they thought (probably correctly) that the idea of a married young woman wouldn't be as err "fulfilling" as an unmarried girl, especially a virgin.

So Anna (who was making between 10 and 20 million dollars a year) willingly went along with this lie, rather than make just a little bit less. To me, she spat in the face of all those mentioned above who were (and are) denied the ability to marry.

There are other issues that make her a whore as well (like the "striptease" she's been err "jerking off" her gullible slaves with re. a comeback that will @ most be a short "encore"). But the marriage scam is enough by itself to call her a whore.

If only Maria Sharapova and Maria Kirilenko would play doubles together more often - particularly at the majors - then the WTA would be able to promote the Super Maria Sisters, and Little Maria would become more famous as a result. Of course this isn't going to happen, because Big Maria needs to conserve her energy for the latter rounds of singles (except at Birmingham where she can get away with playing doubles - the Super Maria Sisters won the title there in 2004, and attempted to defend it in 2005).

I also hope that Little Maria will become famous for her singles-exploits. She has a tremendous amount of innate talent; she's just not strong enough to compete with the many powerful and athletic players on the WTA Tour today, such as Jamea Jackson who beat her in front of me at Birmingham this year.

There are two ways a low ranked player can get TV time in the US. Go deep into a televised tournament, or play a Venus Williams, Serena Williams, Lindsay Davenport early in slam. The second is just luck.
Here's her 2005 record

..SMI HYDERABAD
..QTR DOHA
Q-R16 DUBAI

..R32 BERLIN
..R64 ROME
..128 FRENCH OPEN
..R32 BIRMINGHAM

I "love" these conspiracy theories about the Admins and Mods. Since you've obviously read that "question of character" thread, do note the rather vigorous debate on pages 4 and 5 partly between myself and Griffin, a "power lesbian" (Administrator, no less) to her very core!

And its not the first time we've argued, plus she knows I've questioned the legitimacy of her beloved Momo (and Kim, BTW) as #1, given that neither has won a Slam to this point. Meanwhile, the fact that Anna has the most ridiculous "income in relation to results" in tennis history is irrelevant 2U.

Sure they're hot prospects (as are Sania and Sesil, among others). But "Masha II" suffers somewhat from the sheer # of Russian females "in the hunt". In the great big USA, she'd be the top prospect her age right now. Plus she's on a par with BEL's "next contender" (Flipper, who's been injured, I know). And Heaven help the legitimacy of women's tennis as a sport when only possible beauty pageant contestants rate attention until they make the Top 20.

If Maria is not strong enough to compete with Jamea Jackson then she certainly wouldn't be able to cope with the top 10 on a good day. She's been able to snatch a set here and there but she's not got that one killer shot to do them real damage (from the few matches I've seen of her).

If she is not successful at raising her prospect of appearing on TV by winning more as others have suggested, she can short circuit it by beating a williams or any top 5 player.

That gives a player high profile overnight and raises the curiosity factor and interest about that player.

IMO Widjaja has no game to back up her huge celebrity status, so in that sense you could call her the Asian Kournikova. (and don't try to change the subject by mentioning her win over Patty at IW '03). The match between Widjaja and Kournikova at USO '02 has to be one of the worst televised tennis matches in history.

Its an inside joke going back to when Sarah and I were regulars on the old GoTennis board (B4 it was ovarun by racists after it was fucked up in the late spring '03 month-long site "upgrade"). Veronica (name_change here) loved Angie, the then "Sweets" (Sarah) didn't, and they'd "goodnaturedly diss eachother" about that, among maybe 1,000 other things. ;)

I'm the one who said Patty Probably threw that IW match anyway. In terms of Anna, her match with Enna @ the '03 AO was so bad that on the US delayed telecast, they only showed the 1st set. (If it were boxing, the ref would have stopped the match).
