Capriati out of Pilot Pen

STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS

NEW HAVEN This year's Pilot Pen tournament lost one of its biggest names Wednesday when 2003 champion Jennifer Capriati announced her withdrawal because she has not fully recovered from a shoulder injury.

Capriati, whose image is on a huge billboard for the tournament overlooking Interstate 95 in New Haven, had arthroscopic surgery on her right shoulder to repair a torm labrum earlier this year. Tournament officials said her rehab is taking longer than expected and she wants to be in top physical condition before returning to the WTA Tour.

"Jennifer Capriati is a great talent and a fan favorite here at the Pilot Pen so we are obviously disappointed about her withdrawal due to injury," tournament director Anne Worcester said. "However, the addition of the men's event and the creation of the first ever combined event leading up to the U.S. Open, guarantees

fans a world class entertainment experience. We wish Jennifer a speedy recovery and look forward to having her back in New Haven for the 2006 Pilot Pen."

The Pilot Pen, scheduled for Aug. 19-28 at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale, has received commitments from Amelie Mauresmo, Elena Dementieva, Nadia Petrova and defending champ Elena Bovina.

The tournament added a men's competition this year that will feature Fairfield's James Blake, Taylor Dent, Fernando Gonzalez and Nicholas Massu. It is the first combined men's and women's summer tournament leading into the U.S. Open.
