View Full Version : My Martina Hingis WTT report!!!

Hey guys,
I got to go see the match tonight with Martina Hingis. My friend and I had grandstand seats (upper deck), and we decided before going into the stadium that we'd trade our tickets and get box seats for an extra $20 each. This seemed like a great idea...until we walked into the stadium. Without exaggeration, there weren't more than 400 people watching this! It was really sad to be honest. By the end of the night, there were maybe about 150 people. It must have been difficult for Martina to swallow that after being used to having thousands of people for every match she played.

Singles-Shaughnessy d. Hingis 5-3

I wasn't very impressed with Hingis's singles game. She's like a B grade version of Tatiana Golovin now. Absolutely no power, playing way too much defense, making herself hit two or three extra shots as opposed to just hitting into the court. She was hitting almost no winners or errors, and basically saying to Meghann "Do what you will. The match is in your hands." Given Meghann's current form that should've been enough, but she was playing like her old top 20 self tonight. She was banging out her first serves and her forehand didn't break down at all. She used that shot to push Martina all around the court, but for some reason Martina kept insisting on hitting it to that side. Almost all of the games went to deuce, but in WTT it's no ad scoring. If they had played regular games, Meghann might have won this even more convincingly. I think it wasn't a bad effort from Marti though, and she strikes me as having the ability to be a top 20 player again, but definitely not a top 10 player and absolutely not a major threat to seriously contend for top Tier I's and Grand Slam titles. Her serve was crap, as in Aniko Kapros level, and Meghann was teeing off every single time.

Mixed doubles
Don Johnson/Meghann Shaughnessy d. Hingis/Mark Merklein 5-3.

Not much to really say here. This all came down to Martina's serve as she got broken both games she served. Johnson was absolutely clobbering every serve Martina hit and all Meghann needed was the occasional good return to seal the deal. Martina's returns and volleys were absolutely lovely here though.

Womens doubles
Hingis/Jenny Hopkins d. Shaughnessy/Lisa Mcshea 5-2.

Martina was BACK here. She OWNED that court. I don't think she missed a single shot that entire set, without exaggeration. She was crunching backhand return winners left and right (she hit four in a row off Mcshea's serve at one point) and was deadly up at net, hitting sharply angled volleys and amazing smashes. Her serves were still soft, but well placed enough so that she could get away with it. The score was all the more amazing considering Martina was carrying Hopkins all the way through. Poor Jenny was just terrible. Martina looked like a top 10 doubles player in that set without question. She could win Grand Slam doubles titles again IMO if she put in the work :)

Thanks for the lovely report. I hope Martina comes back and plays just doubles, that would be fun. Is Jenny out of shape or what? I thought for sure she would be getting herself back inside the top 100 at this time last year, but it's gone down the crapper...Any thoughts?

She's not out of shape at all. She looks fine...just can't play doubles for shit. I was shocked when they chose her to play doubles with Hingis instead of Nathalie Grandin, who had amazing volleyes in the warm-up. Jenny's serve and return were OK, but once she got up to net it was brutal. At one point Jenny had a sitting duck of an overhead two feet in front of the net that she let bounce and then shanked right out of the stadium. Even Martina was laughing lol.

Good to hear a report on Martina, Thanks.

Seems almost like she didn't care to much for the first two matches but didn't like the feeling of losing two matches and really stepped it up for the third. (well so I hope)

Bad to hear she's not in training and improving that serve.

Thanks for the advice. When I saw her play, she seemed a bit error prone to say the least...

And damn, why don't they play Nat? I figure if she has any chance of winning a match, it would be in doubles...where one has to cover half the court. I really hope she commits herself to fitness, because I feel she could be so much better. The funky stuff she came up with when i saw her, pretty entertaining. ;)

The WTT website lists Hingis and Merklein as the winners of the mixed doubles match, and says NY won the tie (or whatever the heck they call it, 23 points to 16.

The result won't be saved for ESPN, it will be on the WTT website around 11PM (thats when the results usually come in). Hingis is on the NY Sportimes

The Delaware Smash plays the NY Sportimes. I wonder if that means Venus vs Hingis?? Rivalry renewed???

Then they got it completely wrong. Hingis and Merklein lost the doubles, and New York won 21-18. It was 16-16 when they went into the final match of the night, which was the womens doubles, and Hingis/Hopkins won that 5-2.
