Davenport out of Fed Cup contest

World number one Lindsay Davenport has pulled out of the United States team for the Fed Cup semi-final against Russia in Moscow this weekend.

Davenport has failed to recover from the back injury she suffered during her defeat to team-mate Venus Williams in last weekend's Wimbledon final.

Jill Craybas, who beat Serena Williams in Wimbledon's third round before losing to Venus, comes into the squad.

Venus, doubles star Corina Morariu and Mashona Washington complete the team.

"I'm very disappointed that Lindsay would not be able to support our team," said US captain Zina Garrison.

The Russians are missing US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova and French Open semi-finalist Nadia Petrova because of injuries.

Last year's French Open champion Anastasia Myskina and beaten finalist Elena Dementieva will lead the home team.

Meanwhile France's Virginie Razzano will miss the other semi-final against Spain because of an ankle injury.

Her place will be taken by Severine Beltrame, who had been named as the squad's fifth player.

Amelie Mauresmo, Nathalie Dechy and Mary Pierce are the other members of the line-up.

That's fucked up since she recruited the sisters to come and now only 1/3 of the dream team is able to make it. dammit!

Go USA, anyway.

This means Venus & Corina have to carry the team.

Corina will probably just play doubles which means
Venus will most likely play with her and Venus
will have to to both singles and doubles.

I just don't see either Jill or mashona
doing a thing.

Go USA!

Anyone think Corina may actually play singles?
I'd take her over the other two.

I would have thought they'd have used Meghann Shaughnessy or Lisa Raymond, presuming both made themselves available. At least with their good doubles records there'd be a chance of snatching a 3-2 win.

Very predictable. I was sure about that more than a week ago.. It will be very tough for Venus. The surface will be very slow. A lot of running will have to be done. Two running singles matches and a doubles match in just two days with a very hostile crowd.. Could be tough..

So Jill will play singles? Why not pick, say, Angela Haynes?

venusfan
Jul 6th, 2005, 02:39 PM
Haynes lost to Serena while Jill beat Serena "ok, Serena wasn't Serena" but all Venus can do is with two singles matches and a doubles match.. btw.. will this be on clay or hardcourt?

It wouldn't be easy even with Venus at the top of her game. We're transitioning from grass to clay. Venus can only win 2 matches on her own. She'll need alot of help for the US to win.

Indoor red clay. Venus will have to win 3 points herself. That's been done before.

Damn, Vee's gonna catch hell trying to win this one for the team. I hope she doesn't over exert herself to injury....she's got a US Open to win. Her efforts are still commendable, though.

Jill Craybas is doin dubs with Corina and Mashona is doing singles with Vee..

``Now it will be a bit easier for us,'' Russia's No. 1 Elena Dementieva said. ``The (Wimbledon) winner and the runner-up in one team -- it was too much.''
Thats bad sportsmanship

I just hope that Venus doesn't suffer any injury. I really don't care about the results here as she must be very tired and slow clay is her worst surface. Anyway good luck to all!!!

Mashona's playing singles? Her clay court record is 15-23. She'll struggle to win a set.

Why did the USA not give Amy Frazier a call? She's got a better clay record and has beaten both Myskina and Dementieva. She probably could take better advantage of Elena's serves with her groundstrokes than Mashona could.

The last time the Americans played in the Olympic arena in Moscow was for the 2003 semifinal and final, in which they beat Belgium but lost to France. It meant they never faced the roar of the passionate Muscovites, which will certainly help Myskina, Dementieva, Vera Douchevina and Dinara Safina.

Myskina is convinced her run to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon will be of help.

“I am feeling the ball much better,” she said, “I’m more confident right now from the baseline. It doesn’t really matter whether it’s on grass or clay, because if you feel confident you don’t really care where you play.”

Jill Craybas Joins U.S. Fed Cup Team to Replace Injured Lindsay Davenport

7/6/05 3:12 PM

World No. 1 Davenport Withdraws Due to Back Injury

Captain Zina Garrison to Lead Team in Semifinal vs. Russia July 9-10 in Moscow

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., July 6, 2005 – The USTA and U.S. Fed Cup team Captain Zina Garrison today announced that Jill Craybas has been named to the U.S. team, joining Venus Williams, Mashona Washington and Corina Morariu. Craybas replaces World No. 1 Lindsay Davenport, who has withdrawn from the team due to a back injury sustained in the women’s singles final at Wimbledon. The U.S. Fed Cup team will face Russia in the 2005 Fed Cup World Group I semifinal July 9-10 indoors on clay at Olympic Stadium in Moscow. The winner advances to the Fed Cup final September 17-18 to face the winner of this weekend’s semifinal between France and Spain.

Craybas, 32, will be making her second appearance on the U.S. Fed Cup team. She reached the fourth round at Wimbledon this year, the best Grand Slam finish of her career. Craybas made her Fed Cup debut in the 2004 quarterfinal against Austria.

"Venus, Corina, Mashona, Jill and I wish Lindsay a quick recovery and completely understand her need to recover from her injury at Wimbledon,” said Garrison. “Her unparalleled competitive spirit will be with us in Moscow for our challenge against a tough opponent.”

"It's with great disappointment that I have to withdraw from this week's Fed Cup competition in Moscow,” said Davenport. “I very much was looking forward to joining Zina and the team to represent the U.S. in the semifinal. The injury I sustained during the women's final at Wimbledon requires some healing time and I have been advised by my doctors to tend to the injury so that I can prepare for the upcoming US Open Series summer events in North America and the US Open. I'll be rooting for my teammates from home so that I can hopefully rejoin the team at the Fed Cup final in September."
