that the commentators will address Venus as the "Wimbledon Champion" like they did every time they talked about Maria over the last year? Or even the way Kuznetsova gets "the US open champ" title. I'm thinking no since they don't do it for Serena about OZ.

Yeah, there is a world wide conspiracy against sisters to diminish their accomplishments
I mean it's apparent

Is this is a joke thread? Or is the thread starter that stupid?

No its because the sisters don't need that label. Their names alone are enough to move people. They are so famous and accomplished that people not need tag something to their names.

Naw one loss and the whole Venus is finished talk will start again just like it did with Serena. She wins AUS open, but some commentators act like she can't win anymore

I think they'd just say it in passing. That's what the ESPN commentators say about Serena. They make it seem like her victory in Australia was not enough. They won't make it seem like a huge thing or a huge accomplishment.

If she had followed up the win with even a final showing somewhere, maybe they would have reason to act like she can win.

So, do you honestly think Serena is finished? :hehehe:

They will not say anything about it! What are you thinking?

Even people on this board were saying last week "when will people stop talking about Serena's aus open win? It happened 5 months ago, and in tennis thats long'" yet the very same people could not stop talking about Maria's Wimbledon, which had taken place a year ago.

I guess its also an off hand compliment that the Williams are held to such a high standard that other players accomplishments define them!

In case of Kuzzy, the "US Open champ" label is a must, otherwise casual fans won't pay any attention to some unattractive Russian player they never heard of.

The Williams sisters are past their prime, so people kinda take their huge talents for granted. Maria is a player who is YET to reach her prime, and seems promising, so they talk about her only GS title. When she has about several more and just wins one more, people won't become as excited. It's kinda even obligatory for a multi-slammer to win more slams.
And besides, Maria is hotter, prettier, sexier, and appeals more to the male audience, so she gets the bigger piece of the publicity pie. That's just life. Get over it.

If Venus and Serena are past their prime, how come both of them have won a slam this year and both beat Sharapova in the semis?
I think it should be the opposite. People should make a big deal when a player has won more then one slam.

Well, AO is the least prestigious slam.

Consider that Seles won 9 slam but 4 of them were only AOs.
Or Hingis - THREE of her 5 slams only AOs.

That's why Seles and Hingis get less credit for their 9 and 5 slams respectively than other players with comparable number of slams.

Until now Screamerova is a flash in the pan, a blip on the radar screen , just one of the Russian "-ova-brigade" (Kuzzynova, Hantuchova, Kournikova, Myskinova).

I'm not a great fan of the Williamses but Screamerova can't hold a candle to Venus & Serena.

JFK, you're a stupid bitch who can't handle truth. And as far as me being stupid...I see you only have 25 in vcash...who did you bet on? CAUSE I PICKED THE WINNER.

AO may be the least prestigious slam...but Wimbledon, well :worship:

AH well,... thought this thread was closed long ago...
Seems I've been misunderstood... I've got bad reps for it...
So I wanted to say this...
I'm truly sorry if my post upset a lot of people in this forum. Don't get me wrong... I've been a huge Williams sisters fan before the Russians came along... And before that they were just super... I mean... dominating everything... so I'm just saying ppl won't be as excited as they did when the sisters were on the uprise... well at least normal, non-tennis fans people...
They'll just say "Oh fine. So they won another one, those girls win everything do they?"
I mean what they did this year was unbelievable, but it pales in comparison when compared to a few years before... So yeah... maybe I'm wrong, maybe they're not past their prime... I admit. Just... I wish the 2001 Williams sisters were really back...
And so... to Maria. YEah. she's won a slam. That's it. That's the only thing they can talk about, so they do it. Isn't that right??? And I will admit that her beauty has a lot to do with the publicity she gets... that seems logical enough.
And right, Maria still has a long way to go before she can achieve what Vee and Rena have achieved. But I won't deny that she's very promising, and that the media is quick to embrace her.
Please... I didn't say those things in spite and bitterness. Perhaps I did use a poor choice of words. I was merely being practical.
Phew... long talk... so in conclusion...
Vee and Rena have been and are so great that winning one more slam... well... seems kinda normal, at least to the people who only casually follow tennis. However yeah, as a tennis fan I'll say 'great comeback, good job'
And besides I think being referred the name 'Williams' for Venus will turn more heads than just saying 'Wimbledon Champ' that's for sure. Cuz she's already got a batch of slams...

You have to remember that while other players get criticised all over the place, no-one is allowed to say anything vaguely negative about the Williams.

Maybe if people had said things like Venus seems to be struggling with her motivation this year instead of Venus will never win another slams she's washed up, you wouldn't get so many people. And saying the sisters don't get criticized all over the place just defies logic, it doesn't even deserve answering.
