This show on EPSN Radio, nominated Venus and Serena's dad, Richard, for the weekly Just Shut Up Award. One of the hosts, who was subsituting for one of the Mikes, said that Richard should get the award because of the comments he made about Venus and Serena not being appreciated when they were dominating tennis because of their color, but he also alleged that Richard was upatriotic because he doesn't salute the Americn flag.

BTW, Richard won the award.

who the heck are they to say someone is not patriotic? Lots of people don't salute the flag for religious reasons, etc..

on ESPN's Sunday Conversation, Venus HERSELF said that people don't wanna hear anything regarding race so this "just shut up" award is not that surprising.

besides, who cares what THEY think. i'd rather make Venus wallpaper than send an email that won't be read.

yeah, the u.s. fosters FAUX patriotism by making us recite the "pledge of allegiance". I stopped pledging my allegiance in middle school and students were like "why don't you pledge?" some even made fun of me for not pledging. I just felt sorry for those poor robots.

you see, over here you can be proud of the Union Jack/St Georges cross etc, but there's such a thing as taking it too far :) if everytime we saw it, we saluted it, we'd be considered silly :)

I gave them a piece of my mind, those chicken hawks, armchair patriots, who have never done anything to defend the country, but yet always first to accuse others of being unpatriotic. They keep themselves and their children out of the arms forces, yet they encourage others to join and fight.

But Venus and Serean might; the sponsor for the award is McDonalds, a company they endorse.

What's more patriotic than experiencing the American dream? :D They're Jehova's Witnesses so they don't pledge to the flag or government. JW's don't celebrate birthdays either.

I just saw Venus on ESPN2 Cold Pizza show.
She does looks very good, poised and articulate.

She now has a calm, balanced radiance, a confident demeanor, a contained eagerness look about her to play the game of tennis, a mature seriousness that comes through when listening or talking to her.

The look of someone with the awareness that eveyrbody has finally gotten what she been trying to get accross for some time now but was having trouble because the result was not showing what talking about.

A calmness of weight lifted of one's shoulder.

Great analysis of the Venus!!! She has total control of her own life and not what others think it should be, but what she dictates it to be. It has been a difficult struggle for her but when she unleached that exuberance, pure joy and happiness on center court it was a beauty to behold. :hearts:
