All the grand slam finals this year have been contested by former champions of the respective grand slam with the latter former champion winning in each ocassion.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN- 2000 champion Lindsay Davenport lost to 2003 champion Serena Williams

FRENCH OPEN- 2000 champion Mary Pierce lost to 2003 champion Justine Henin-Hardenne

WIMBLEDON- 1999 champion Lindsay Davenport lost to 2000 champion Venus Williams.

Do you notice a pattern? Not only are the former champions meeting in the final but it is the player who won her first title after the former (wins her first title) wins the final.

Lindsay won the Aussie Open first than did Serena so Serena beat her this year and the same has been for the Justine/Pierce and Venus/Lindsay

If this pattern is to hold up, I think the US Open final will be contested by former champions with the latter champion winning. My predicition:

1999 champion Serena v 2000 champion Venus Williams!!!!
winner-Venus!

it is the year 2000 all over again with the finalists/champions. Ordinarily it would not be stunning with lindsay/venus in the winner's circle but considering how unlikely it was for mary to make a final at the beginning of rg, that is amazing!

so who do you think will be in the final of US Open 2005!?

OMG Lindsay Davenport def Serena Williams in the final! Or Justine def Lindsay in the final. Could this be true????

It'll be one of the following scenarios:

Monica Seles def Justine Henin-Hardenne
Monica Seles def Lindsay Davenport
Monica Seles def Serena Williams
Monica Seles def Venus Williams

Nice facts!

We'll just have to wait and see.

I hope that Lindsay wins the title though!

Nice observations. But you also forgot the finalist with five years between their first appearance. I imagine that Lindsay was in the finals of OZ five years ago and also for wimbledon. While Mary was in the finals of roland garros also five years too. Venus won her first grand slam five years ago.

Venus is my fav, but if your logic is correct, she would lose in the finals of the USopen to Serena.

Please! Maria has endoursements to plug and perfume to peddle! Why would she bother with the irritant of tennis?

Maria Sharapova will not win US Open 2005
I agree 100% :D

But that's because Kim Clijsters will :bounce:

You can look at it another way and say:

Serena wins Aus Open
Justine wins French Open
Venus wins Wimbledon
and then....who are we missing??? KIM! to win US Open.

But, following J Migoe's prediction, it could be Justine :bounce::bounce::bounce:

Kim's going out in the 4th round again. She's a choker. Davenport owns her as of late--as I'm sure the other top players would if she ever drew another of them.

davenport owns her? davey won 2 out of 3 matches against her this year. and kim won the HC one. and besides, owning would be like 6-2 6-3 victories.

First off Kim's label as a "Choker" is highly exaggerated. Lets see your fave beat Justine in a Final (btw if you haven't noticed, JuJu rarely, and I mean rarely losses a final) or beat Jennifer in her prime. Oh lets not forget that Kim was just a youngling then, and that match went 10-12 in the deciding set. Anyways Lindsay is 2-1 this year against Kim with the wins coming on her non-favorite surfaces. Kim loves the hard courts, remember? Also Maria has NEVER beaten Kim, so if she's also one of your top players that you're so sure would "own" Kim if they were to play in the near future...umm, ok. Lastly Kim will not lose in the 4th round barring injury, because by the time the US Open kicks off, she won't even be able to meet a "top player' tilll at least the quarters.

Kim is looking good but I don't see her winning this year. You cannot upset the pattern once its been laid. Last year, it was the Russians!!! This year, it's the year of former champions or it could be the beginning of the Williams' resurgence

I don't like Sharapova, but I think she has as good a shot as any to win the US open. I'm a firm believer that trends aren't set in stone and just because someone has never done something doesn't mean it can't happen.

But I'm telling you. Sharapova or any other pova is not winning the US Open this year. I'm marking this thread and we are coming back to it after the US Open!

Every streak comes to an end. The first Russian streak came to an end after three. And the streak of old-guard former champions winning comes to an end after three. The next streak is of people born close to the Arctic Circle winning all the slams.

That same streak ended last year.

It's entirely feasible that she'll only be seeded 9th at USO and thus could still meet the #1 in the Rd. of 16.

True , but she has zero points to defend till then. And she's already commited to San Diego and Charleston, and she just may play Toronto as well. We all know how strong a player Kim is on hard courts, so she'll definitely will be moving up. Just how far up is anybodies guest. Oh well, like it really matters anyway. I want Kim to play and beat the "top players" at the USO, so all the haters will eat their words :p

Also Maria has NEVER beaten Kim.

The only recent meeting was in the Miami Final. 6-3 7-5

The other two meetings were when Maria was 16.

Interesting theory. :speakles: However, I don't believe in that! You can't be so sure about it. Maria has potential to win US Open. Just hope that she won't have bad draw. ;)

I agree with sharapova not wining US Open.

And here are the reasons why:
Lindsay, Venus, Kim, Justine, Serena, Amelie

If all of them pulls out, then:
Kuznetsova, Petrova, Molik, etc

Yep, interesting to see how she can play without the pressure of having to defend points... It might make a significant difference...
btw do you think she'll be popular with the crowd at Flushing Meadows?

Impossible is nothing !
But yes... it's very, very hard for her to win.

Why ?
Because every players just knew.
In 2005, if you beat Sharapova in a Grand Slam... you are a guaranteed champ.
AO: Serena def. Sharapova in SF.... champion.
FO: Henin def. Sharapova in QF... champion.
Wim: Venus def. Sharapova in SF... champion.

Coincidence ?
Maybe...
But now everyone will try their best when playing against her
