I know after the final of Grand Slams American TV ratings get posted here quite often. As Wimbledon was on BBC here in the UK the ratings are published on some websites so I thought I would post them.

Excellent ratings for the final, considering it was up against Live 8 and all the hype that got. I thought Live 8 would do better than it. Last year's peak was 6 million viewers.

Between 4.15pm and 5.45pm the women's final on BBC1 proved more popular than Live 8 on BBC2, attracting 5.9 million viewers.

The peak audience for the women's final came from 5.30pm, when Venus Williams clinched victory with 6.8 million BBC1 viewers watching, or a 62% audience share.

Over on BBC2 during the same 90-minute period, Live 8 was watched by 4.6 million viewers.

 it's great that people are more interested in a women's tennis match than ending poverty and aids in africa

Yeah but watching this concert did not help the poverty because they would not let people donate any money so it was just a big concert.

No one sitting at home could actually help in any way even if they tried

At least they got off their asses and did something instead of sitting in their nice big fat swiss house laughing about it.

i'm not swiss Jon :) I didn't mean to sound as overly cynical as i did butdisagree with the way they have gone about doing this and to me it kind of seems like many just want the good publicity that came with doing it - especially when you hear about the cat fights etc that went with paul mccartney insisting he open and close; madonna/mariah carey etc.

Good to see high viewing figures for the women's final but if, as had been rumoured Live8 had been on BBC1 and Wimbledon on BBC2 the position would have been reversed.

I can't explain it but many Brits switch on to BBC1 rather than BBC2 automatically. Switch a show fron BBC2 to 1 in the same time slot and it will pick up more watchers. Seems strange, I know.

But let's hope many of the casual viewers will have been impressed by Venus and Lindsay. Surely, they're bound to have been.

A bit of a surprise, not really sure if it's a good one. I watched Live 8 just because I thought it was a lot more meaningful, although every other year of course I watch the Wimbledon final.

Some people still don't seem to understand that Live 8 had absolutely sod all to do with fundraising because that can only do so much. It's all about piling pressure on the 8 most powerful men in the world when they meet in Gleneagles (sp?) to decide whether the people in Africa deserve a better deal in life or if they should just leave them all in poverty. The way they wanted your help was by signing the list at live8live.com. Understand, Live 8 is about permanent changes and giving Africa the chance to work their way out of poverty. Live Aid was about immediate short term help.

Whether Live 8 actually worked, we shall find out very soon..................................

Good. :)

Live 8 probably won't mean that much in the long run.

And Dirty Sanchez I also don't understand why fund-raising wasn't made for it. I seriously do not think that the Bush's & Blair's of the world care a lot about Africa

Well we shall see, and you may be right, but like JonBcn said before it's better than sitting around and doing nothing about it. At least we're making our voices heard, whether they take notice of what the world thinks is up to them.
