Venus showed the tennis establishment that she is back. She has that fire in her eyes again and will now be hard to beat. Watch out because she's gonna be on fire.;)

there are no flukes when it comes to winning tournaments. they play their opponents in front of them and the better player wins. the argument you could have is "is the player gonna stay in form consistently."

Yes, this Wimbledon win is a fluke win for Venus
because this is her third Wimbledon title and fifth slam title overall :tape:.

Once a champ always a champ. If Venus stays healthy and trained she''ll be a threat at every slam from now on.

nope just mentally drained by that semi as she had played epic matches against Mauresmo and Coetzer beforehand, one of those macthes went to 8-6 in the third set I believe. But are you comparing Hingis to Sesil? As much as I disliked Hingis, she was an unbelievable player with a vast amount of talent so you can't even start to compare her to Sesil yet :o

Yes, Graf suffered from her back injury that sidelined her for months later that year.

BTW, 1994 definitely wasn't Graf's best year. 1987, 1988, 1989, 1993, 1995, 1996 were better.

But 2001 was Venus' best year ever, according to her fans. In that year she was thrashed by Hingis at AO (1-6, 1-6) and beaten by all-time great Babsi Schett in FO's 1st round (4-6, 4-6).
That's the difference between the greatest and the merely good ...

Even if she doesn't win another major the word fluke can never be associated with Venus. In case you didn't know that term is associated with 1 win major champions. Check to see if your fav is among the bunch currently. :(

Strange things have happen in tennis like Conchita beating Martina to win Wimbledon but Venus being in the final of Wimbledon 5 times and winning 3 is not a strange occurence.

In my book CanO and Brighton are less important than AO and FO.
Face it - Venus lost 1-6,1-6 against Hingis at AO and 4-6, 4-6 at FO (1st round) against Schett in the best year of her career. And she wasn't injured.

1) 1992 was not Graf's best year. 1987, 1988, 1989, 1993, 1995, 1996 were better.
2) Capriati was among the top-10 already for 2 years, had stretched Seles to 6-7 in 3rd at USO one year earlier (as a 15-year-old).

Stop fighting the big boys, sonny ...

Clinton was a good President, so was JFK.
But they weren't "great".
FDR and Reagan were. George W. Bush most probably will be called "great" some day.

Same in tennis.
Lenglen, Wills, Court, Navi, Evert, maybe King, Graf are "greats".
ASV, Venus, Hingis, Mandlikova are not.
Maybe Connolly and even Seles (although - no Wimbledon ... ).

I won't dispute that.
She is the 2nd best player of the 21st century career-wise (5 slams).
Although Serena AND Enna are better peak-wise.

Lenglen still is well known.
Actually she is the most famous female tennis player pre-Evertilova.
Why? Because she was a perfect fusion of athleticism and femininity.
Same with Graf in the 2nd half of the 20th century.

In the year 2100 people will remember exactly two names from the 20th century: Lenglen and Graf.
The Williamses will be forgotten even in 2050. As Bueno, Gibson and Jacobs are already today.

Graf - "the goddess".

No. 'We're' calling out classless haters like you, who have the ability to engage in no form of discussion other than abuse. :) Why should I do more when your own words are an indictment of your behavior and attitude?

Back-accusing others of your own crimes is an infantile tactic.

That was posted when I called certain rogue Williams-fans out for making gratuitous, unwarranted and classless attacks on Maria. Other Williams fans then, instead of taking their errant compatriots to task, launched in with violent personal abuse.

You guys have got to show respect for the players and others on this board, and clean up your act. At the moment a lot of it stinks.

Your favourite didn't win Wimbledon. Get over it.

She won it seven times.

Infantile to a person who can't refute their own pathetic behavior :D

I'll take advice on respect when you yourself actually show some. Until then try to stop being a hypocrite among other things.

I'm still waiting on those names you wanted to mention.

Why can't we just give credit where credit is due without questioning whether a player earned a title? While I'm not a big Venus fan, I still give her props for winning Wimbledon this year. I applaud her hard work and efforts to become the champion. She deserves it, just as anyone who wins the title does. Stop saying the titles are flukes....they're true testaments to the players' hard work, determination, and are definitely well-earned.

Thanks, very objective.

Different people mean different things when they say "great" or "fluke". For some people a fluke is an event that is upsetting. For some people great is George Bush and Ronald Reagan.

However, the person that started this thread is a hater and wanted to start trouble.

How can it be a fluke when it's her 5th grand slam title and her 5th Wimbeldon final in the last 6 years:scratch:  . Her loss in the early rounds last year appears to be the fluke. Ithink no matter how poorly Venus appears to be playing, she will always have a chance at Wimbeldon. Not only does she love the tournament, but grass appears to be her favorite surface and is the best for her game.

here we are with the racial crap, dont u ever get tired of it? :o :tape:

Venus and Serena's achievements have been an inspiration and a boost to the black community and beyond for making their mark on the 'tennis establishment'. Same as Masha is an inspiration...same as any person doing well in their profession who has come through hard times :) .

I don't think there was anything accusatory about the post or any hint of a 'racist' vibe. For someone who said the thread was 'to get our opinions' you seem to have sturred up quite a lot of trouble. As far as i'm concerned I hope Vee is back to her best, but I hope that for all players whether they're my favourites or not its the best thing for the game.

Whatever floats your boat I guess but I just don't get it

A fluke is a player ranked perhaps 500 and comes out of no-where to win the title, not Venus Williams.

Granted she may not have been expected to win, I know very well TRUE tennis enthusiasts would have known better not to bet their houses against her.

Not a very thoughtful thread to say the least.........

Look for Venus and Lindsay to duel it out this Summer and another showdown at USO.

An already 4-time GS champion doesn't have "fluke" wins...don't be rediculous...

will this title bring back the 00-01 champion venus williams? or will the "i cant pass 4th round to save my life" venus of the last times resurrect? :tape:

This is such an immensely stupid question or commentary. All you have to do is to look at her level of play, the opponents that she outplayed to win the tournament to see that her game is back.

I swear most of these types of things posted here about these tennis players show absolutely no insight or love for tennis at all. They appear to be caustic commentary placed simple to get attention from people they don't even know. No one's social life can be that bad!.

Well she can beat the slow, tall girls on her favorite surface.
