details - was it in Ha'Aretz, Yediot, Maa'riv or some sports new paper?
is there an article? link?
if so - it would be wonderful.
anna might stay another year just for that :)
let's hope israel will have more top300 players by then...
I'm quite sure gubacci, nagyova and some other players would love to come here, as well as ipek and the new turkish players.
this could be great!

I also saw the article and told all my friends (I only have two friends that like tennis, and I think I gave one of them a heart attack:D ), and we atarted planning how we'd buy the tickets and take a one week vacation from our jobs so we could see the matches.

In "Haaretz" today it says the tournament will be of $140,000 so it will be a tier IV
It also says the tournament will take place in 2006

In "Maariv" it says that the tournament is expected to be from $110,000 to $170,000
but it could be even double than that!!!

I guess we will have to wait for tomorrow to know for sure

In any case I don't think there is sufficient infrastructure in Israel to host a tournament higher than tier III..

That is awesome, good job cousins!

really - we should not host anything more than a tierIII or else it will crumble within 3-5 years tops.
i'd much rather like it to be close to the turkish event, but that would require it to be a clay tourny which doesn't fit our country...
anyway - it makes me very happy :)

In a press conference today it was anounced that the tournament would be of $140,000 (tier IV) and would take place in October of 2006.

Here is a picture from the conference (from Maariv):
Henry Zimund that contributes the money for the tournament is in the middle

Tier IV commitments: "best effort to provide 3 Silver exempts players"

Silver exempts players: Tier III 21-30 , Tier IV 31-52.

which means 3 players ranked between 31-52 will be in the turny I think :)

Women to get new tour stop in Israel next year
Wed Jul 6, 2005 10:23 PM BST

TEL AVIV, July 6 (Reuters) - Top class professional tennis will return to Israel next year for the first time since 1994 following the announcement of a new WTA Tour event.

"We will do all we can to attract the world's best players. My intention is to raise the standard of women's tennis in Israel," tournament sponsor Henri Zimand told reporters on Wednesday.

The $140,000 WTA Tour Tier IV event will be held during the week of October 24 parallel with two other WTA tournaments, a $585,000 Tier II competition in Linz, Austria and a $170,000 Tier III event in Hasselt, Belgium.

Israel Tennis Association chairman Ian Froman said that a venue for the tournament had not yet been fixed, although the most likely site would be the Israel Tennis Centre at Ramat Hasharon on the northern outskirts of Tel Aviv.

A men's ATP tournament was last held at Ramat Hasharon in 1994 and was abandoned when sponsorship money ran out.

Since then, only smaller events such as satellite and challenger tournaments for men and women have been held.

Israel has three women ranked in the world's top 130, Anna Smashnova (61), Shahar Peer (67) and Tzipora Obziler (123).

Isnt that where Shahar is from? I think Fahoum is from there also. I know Nadine is guarenteed a wild card. Shes the only hope foor the future.

ipek and pemra will be there surely :)

Og course, Linz is one of smashnova's favorite tournies so i'm not liking this date, and since there will be three tournies at once - Israel will be the least favorite tourny of the three...
oh well.

Shahar_Peer_Rulz
Jul 8th, 2005, 09:33 AM
Shahar isn't from there, she's from Wingate and Nadine(Fahoum) is also from Wingate.
And because it's an Israel Tennis Association tournament(you can see Ian Fruman in the pic) and not a Israel Tennis Center tournament then Nadine will get a wildcard, and Julia Glushko will get one too.

seriously though, I hope because the turny is new, It will attract curious people who have never been in israel :)

According to this article (in hebrew):
http://www.nrg.co.il/online/3/ART/964/116.html

They are trying to secure Jelena Jancovic, Sania Mirza and Ana Lena Groenfeld for the tourney
hope they come :yeah:

Shonami Slam
Jul 29th, 2005, 12:25 PM
ana-lena is top30 and jankovic is top20, both young and very talented.
jankovic is also drop-dead gorgeous, that will attract the israelis ;)
but really, it's good because both have more than just baseline tennis, and will add a better touch to the tourny. jankovic's DTL shot is increddible, i have to see her in action - it's supposed to be amazing to see her fire on the run. she and smashnova are considered two of the fastest players on tour also
ostrovskaya, Savransky's doubles partner lately will probably come too - she used to be top100, and she was great in doubles. should she continue going up (with or without savransky) in doubles rankings, she could add a great feature to the draw :)
