Is it just me or this is there a striking resemblance between the two? When I saw the Miss Universe telecast, she instantly reminded me of Maria Sharapova. What do you guys think?

I can see a slight resemblance. If Maria dyed her hair dark brown, I think we'll see it.

Anyway. MARIA! :clap2:

Maria is more girly for sure... I don't see much in common between them

This woman looks great.. cant even compare her to sharapova.. sharapova would probably need 100 visit to the plastic surgeon to look like this woman.

Funny you'd say this. I believe Miss Universe is involved in a dispute with a plastic surgeon who claims to have transformed her from a plain-Jane into a beauty queen. He's using her as free advertisement.

There's no way plastic surgery could have done that. He may have done a little nipping and tucking, but God gets credit for the main job.

Her first runner-up got implants, but from what I read on a message board (hence, the lack of credibility regarding the source), she only got her eyebrows done and dyed her hair black and ofcourse, got her hair styled differently and some training. I wouldn't put any of those under "plastic surgery".

That really should be outlawed, beauty queens being able to have surgery...it's such a fake out! :(

Hadn't thought about it, but in a sense, it's sort of like athletes taking performance-enhancing drugs:lol:

yeah it is.....but I think a little worse because at least athletes still have to work hard to maximize their talent....where as with surgery it just comes down to how good the doctor is. :o

Mmmm Miss Canada is more beautiful but if you put make up to Maria like Miss Canada has for this contest, maybe both will have a ressemblance!

That's true. You have some of the best insights, Ketta.

What I like about the Miss Universe pageant is that it showcases all of the flavors of beauty. There are a lot of really, really, really, really uninformed people who only think blond hair and blue eyes are beautiful or EuroCentric features are the best. They show it in their posts and whole outlook on life. Luckily, their attitudes are creating more backlash, and companies are expanding their definitions of beauty.

I pride myself in knowing that beauty comes in all flavors, and I'll never be a closed-minded person to lose out on all the wonderful views.

What does Miss Universe look like when she releases her breath, I wonder.

Now it looks like she's been wearing Victorian dresses a bit too long.

What's the diff between Miss Universe and Miss World?

Miss Universe is slightly younger than Miss World as a pageant. Miss World is run by The Morleys, a British family. Miss Universe is part-owned by Donald Trump and NBC.

Miss Universe and Miss World both select their semifinalists based on performance in swimsuits, evening wear and interviews with the judges. However, in recent years, Miss World strayed away from that format. First, in 2003, it introduced 5 semifinalists (fast-track competition winners) who got a place in the semifinals by winning a competition held before the final night whether by internet vote, modelling, talent, beachwear or athletics. Then, this year, they went for a completely different method, allowing viewers to vote for their favourite contestants via sms [Viewer's could see all delegates in the 'Miss World : You Decide' show aired a week before the pageant]. Miss World and Miss Universe used to have Top 10 semifinalists heading into the new millenium.

However, in 2003 Miss Universe introduced 15 semifinalists. Miss World introduced 20 semifinalists in 2002. Miss Universe has been more consistent in sticking with its format. After a panel of judges chooses the 15 semifinalists from the preliminary competition, a new celebrity panel of judges is called for the night of the final competition where the 15 semifinalists are announced. The top 15 compete in evening wear. The Top 10 is selected based on the evening gown competition and then those 10 women compete in swimsuits. The Top 5 is chosen who have to answer the final question [which is different for each contestant now] and the winner and her four runners-up are selected based on their answers.

Miss World is more complicated. They start their show by showing every single contestant in evening gowns. Then the top 20 is announced and we get to see a small videoclip on each one of them. Based on that, a Top 5 is announced and they have to answer questions. The winner and her runners-up are announced.

I have a lot more differences if you're still interested ;)
