Before Wimbledon 2005, did you believe or not that Venus could win a Grand Slam title again?

Let's vote.

Thank you!

I believed she could win this one as I wrote in one of my posts earlier this year ;)

I said it a million times. She needed to get hungry again and really want it. I said she had the ability but the desire was the question mark. So yes, I believed too.

I most definitely did, every time she enters a tourny i do believe she can win it.
I also believe no slump lasts forever esp if a player gets healthy that is why even if i am not a big myskina fan i keep expecting her to really show up one of these days and stun just about everyone. She started to do so at wimby!

plus when venus left Rg she had this look of disgust on her face, that loss triggered it. she has had losses before and shown disappointment, but disgust not .

I remember it too. Well spotted.

I used to say that she smiled after her losses. She wasn't then.

Imagine what she'd do to Sesil the next time they play.

I thought it was highly unlikely. I have always felt she had the raw materials -power, athleticism and so on - to come back but was lacking the desire and the technique. I still think she is technically nowhere near her potential but she showed that the desire is back and with that hopefully she'll work on her game.

Then again, Navratilova won two Wimbly titles in 78 & 79 then lost her way, only to return at 25 to begin a period of dominance that lifted her from being a Major champion to the select group of one of the greatest ever. Venus is now 25, so....

Yes. Of course, that didn't mean that she would.

I always believed that Venus could win a slam again but I didn't expect her to win Wimbledon 2005 :bounce:  :bounce: I'm still very happy about that , especially after her weird unnecessary loss at the FO. I really thought Venus wasn't hungry for the big titles anymore, but she proved me wrong and I'm glad she did.
Good things really come for those who wait.

I believed that she'd win a slam again but didn't think it was going to come so soon.

I believe Venus could've gone undefeated for three years. That wasn't the Question. The question was "How much does Venus want it?"...

now, we know

Venus Williams: "I've always felt that I can play at this level. I just gave myself the opportunity at this tournament to do itů I knew I could play better.

Yeah, uhm, being healthy is very important because it gives you the opportunity to train. All last year I didn't really have the opportunity to prepare because I never was quite healthy. Probably made a lot of bad decisions to go out and play tournaments. It's the past now.

But I have had the opportunity this year to gather strength and gather a rhythm and get the opportunity to train, even when I didn't play as well as I wanted to, at least I had the chance to go back and keep training. Whereas in the past, you know, 2004, I didn't really have that chance. I would even be in practice and say, "Okay, today I've got to work on serves first because I'm probably not going to last longer than an hour out here.""
Reading Venus' post-match interview after beating Masha made me understand better why she hadn't been playing well in 2004.

And to answer the Poll question:

- In 2004 I believed in Venus more than I did this year before the Wimbledon. So last year I wrote: "I Still Believe" many times, whereas this year I only wrote once after Venus beat Serena.

- This year we had to wait until Mid of May to see Venus win her 1st title of the year and it was a Tier III tournament.

So I not only didn't believe she could win another GS title, I even didn't believe she could win a Tier I or Tier II title this year.

to be honest : no.

but I'm pleased that she has :p

The child is too talented not to . so I always believed it would be a matter of time-- :p

Jul 4th, 2005, 05:35 PM
yeah for me it was never "if she would win one againg" but "When would she win one again". I knew she would but I wasn't sure when she would get everything together for it to happen but I always believed it would happen.

Jul 4th, 2005, 05:36 PM
I believed that she could. I knew it'd be all up to her to get the job done, and that's exactly what she did. I never bought into the crap that the tour had "caught up" to the sisters.

Jul 4th, 2005, 05:36 PM
I never ever ever ever lost faith in my Venus. I always knew she would come back...it was just a matter of time :)

Jul 4th, 2005, 05:49 PM
No i didn't think either sister would win a slam ever again and they both did this year. They sure proved me wrong. I'm very happy for them.

Black Mamba.

I believed she could because of these reasons:

1. She still had all the tools to win and dominate ie... Speed, quickness, strength.

2. She was healthy again

3. She is a very competitive person

4. The haters really ticked her off ie.. Pam Shriver, Mary C, Tracy Austin, etc, etc

5. Even when she struggled she looked better and better each match.
