3 are locks regardless whether they play for the rest of the year or not:

Davenport
Sharapova
Henin

3 should lock by US Open

Mauresmo
Williams
Clijsters

2 are up for grabs.

IMO these 2 players will make it:
Pierce
Kuznetsova

Wild CARD: S.Willaims. if she gets in form quickly enough, she should be in, Sveta will be out.

serena will most definitely make it, she left wimby healthy and has time to regroup, after an early loss, look for her to be stung into action!
I believe they will be lindsay, justine, maria, williams x2, kim, amelie and possibly kuzy/dementieva.
justine lost rd 1, i believe both her and serena are as mad as hell and will literally tear the tour on the US hardcourts, venus has found form, i don't see whay she should regress, she is riding high on confidence. Kim has the game to stay with ayone, perhaps she is now more motivated than ever, she doesn't want t draw lindsay in rd of 16 agains at the USO.
maria, lindsay and amelie are just too consistent to not maek the final 8.

Pfff....whatever.

Anyway, looking at the race, I see Nadia Petrova actually has a better chance than Sveta, as long as Sveta doesn't repeat as USO champ. Schnyder also has a nice bundle of points, however I don't really see her as being a threat for top eight. She's just not consistent enough. :p

Rtael

lol....everyone is overlooking Nadia just like I did. Looking at the rankings though, she has a very good shot, and has the consistent results to make it.

But Nadia making it would be like Vera making it last year....

blumaroo
Jul 4th, 2005, 04:35 AM
yeah If Nadia makes it then she might as well stay home. I like her alot but I can't see her beating anybody from the top eight except for Mauresmo on a very bad day. Serena should make it to make it more exciting, but I'm afraid some injuries and not playing will prevent her.

Other 5:

Nadia doesn't have mental stamina ( at myself for saying this) IMO and will not make it.

Sharapova
V. Williams
Davenport
Kuznetsova
S. Williams
Mauresmo
Henin
Clijsters

In that order. I think Sharapova will do better, and bigger, in her tournaments this summer/fall, and improve her US Open result. V. Williams will come out firing this summer and rise significantly up the rankings. Davenport will still be a force, but not as deadly as last years summer/fall. Kuznetsova will improve mightily, and Wimbledon should reinforce for her that she has the game to contend with the best. S. Williams will start more slowly than V. Williams, but pick up the pace towards US Open, maybe SF or F spot. Mauresmo is my most uncertain pick, because I just don't remember what she did last summer/fall, but I don't think she will quite keep up with the big 5. I doubt Henin will be very impressive off the clay this year, but consistent semi's and quarters, with a win and a final or two. Clijsters will be hampered by her low ranking, but every time she wins, she rises, becuase she has NOTHING to defend. I'd imagine Sharapova won't end the year as #1, though.

Good luck to these, and all the other ladies in contention, and I hope at least a few outsiders prove me wrong!

A lot of people are choosing Mary to make it to the Year-ending champs. Boy that would be cool if she did make it.

Currently this is how things stand for the Race:

1 L. DAVENPORT
2 M. SHARAPOVA
3 J. HENIN-HARDENNE
4 A. MAURESMO
5 V. WILLIAMS
6 K. CLIJSTERS
7 N. PETROVA
8 P. SCHNYDER
9 S. WILLIAMS
10 M. PIERCE

but im thinking.....
Davenport
Venus
Serena
Sharapova
Henin-Hardenne
Mauresmo
Pierce
Clijsters

...i dont think Kusnetsova will make it, niether will Myskina or Dementieva, and Petrova and Syncher do not have it in them to keep inside the top 8.

I think all the slam winners should be there. and the world number one. Slams are the most important thing in tennis. Thats is how they do it in the mens game

I thought the wta did the
same as well, but i guess not.

Gaudio last year didn't by the race rankings but
because he won a Slam(The French) he got an
automatic in.

Anyways, I'm sure the 3 ladies Slam
winners this year so far will make it.

It would be amazing if Mary made it after all these years. She said its one of her ambitions this late into her career and she has a good shot at it. Really crazy to think she's nearly back in the top 10 after where she was just 3 or 4 months ago. That's what a few wins and confidence does for you!

My betting for the eight players at this years YEC are:

Lindsay Davenport - for sure Lindsay will be there without a shadow of a doubt.

Maria Sharapova - no doubt for Maria either who will hopefully pick up more titles in America and the fall.

Justine Henin-Hardenne - will probably make it depending on how many tournaments she plays and how well she does in them.

Venus Williams - I can see Venus making it for sure. Venus will no doubt pick up some US hardcourt titles and one or two in the fall if she continues her Wimbledon fall.

Serena Williams - not picking up points at the French and crashing out early in Wimbledon won't have done her any favours but fully recovered she has a good shot at getting to LA.

Kim Clijsters - always good in the hardcourt season and the fall where she dominated in the 2003 season should give Kim enough points to make it to the YEC.

Patty Schnyder - been having a great year apart from her blip in Wimbledon. She will more than likely be seeded to get to the QF in every event she plays now with being just outside the Top10 in the world, which will give her enough points to hopefully get there.

and......

there is always a floater, someone you won't expect to make it, so it could be either Mauresmo, Pierce, Petrova or Kuznetsova.

woops. Um, scratch Kuzzie, add Momo. Then scratch Lena D, and add Kuzzie (as the real person who is going to make it:p .)

I don't see Pierce making it. She still has to perform outside of the slams, which she hasn't done this year outside of the QF at Indian Wells. From her performances at RG and Wimbledon, it's hard to tell if she is just getting amped up for the slams or actually making a serious run up the ranks.

Davenport, Sharapova, Henin-Hardenne, Mauresmo, and Clijsters are all locks, since they play consistently well week in and week out.

Can Ivanovic play enough tournaments under the age restrictions to make it? In my mind, she is a top 10 player now.

Few would argue that these are truely the 7 best players in the world:

(no order) Kim, JuJu, Vee, Rena, Masha, Linds, & MoMo

So "hopefully" they'll all be in (Rena is the only one that concerns me). If that was to happen, this may just be the greatest most competitive YEC ever. That would be awesome :D

Btw though she hasn't won shyt :tape: this season, I confidently feel that Sveta is the 8th best player, so if she was to fill the last spot, it would make a dream tournament of truley the Best Talent of the WTA. Awesome :yeah:

Mary's form and confidence has gone up 100% since Roland Garros, she's a different player. It will be interesting to see how she performs in the regular tour events now, although knowing Mary, she'll probably lose her first match to someone ranked 362! ;)

Sorry but how in the world is everyone so confident that Serena will make it? She will most likely take time off after Wimbledon no? And she currently stands outside of the top 8 EVEN with a grand slam win.
