"Let's do it," she said. "Let's think big. Let's think beyond what these people are trying to hold us down to. Doctors, lawyers, engineers, musicians."

I'm not even sure what she means by saying being a doctor or a lawyer or an engineer is holding someone down.

That quote doesn't make any sense. She is a musician. So is she saying that these people are forcing her to be a musician? Besides, what is wrong with being a doctor, lawyer or engineer? Those are very respectable positions.

There's only one possible explanation: marijuana.

Dang y'all are slow.

She's saying to black people... let's think bigger. Let's become Doctors, Lawyers, etc. By "these people" she's referring to the mainstream thought that black people are only good for entertaining. We're more than singers and ball dribblers.

Yes, but she's put musicians in the same sentence as doctors and lawyers. :scared:

However, yes, your thought is correct, what she means is holding black people down to lower positions. Let's aim to become doctors, lawyers, musicians etc...

Sorry, but the way the original quote was posted, it made it seem that Keys was saying the opposite.

Yeah, I think by musicians she meant, let's not just sing the songs but like write them, produce them, arrange them, etc. cuz that's were the REAL money is at.

I think the OP knew exactly what she meant, but when it comes too anything racial it likes to start controversy. Their was nothing wrong with Alicia's comment, some people need to find a hobby.

One of my hobbies is deciphering Alicia Keyes quotes. So so deep, and SO over my head.

Besides, I didn't see anything "racial" about this. I just as soon believe she was referring to Democrats.

She is refering to the black community and to many people who are aware of how the black community are still treated and viewed by the people or as she referred "THESE people" who run our country.

She is saying we can become more than the stereotype person that we've been portrayed since we were brought over here beyond our control. So go on continue to move forward.. become a Doctor, a Lawyer a Musician. We don't have to aim for the hoops and or the MC Mic 24/7 365.

Alot of people need to take a class on "Cultural and Diversity" or some class on "Black American History".

It is a known fact that many african american or black people in America still feel SKEPITAL(or IMHO truth tellers) with many white people or people who make the laws and who run this country.

I see discrimination because of my skintone all the time, even at my job.. and when I walk into a highend store. Hell I just went swimming the other day and I heard this fool say the N word in his general conversation. He probably thought I was Latina the idiot fool. Yet I ignored him and kept on having my fun, realizing that he is the ignorant one.
