Apparently a girl was killed after loss of blood after a shark bit her. About 8 feet long, probably a tiger shark or a bull shark.

Sharks

I feel bad for them, this is once again going to make people hate them.

Let me tell you, I have been a huge shark lover all my life, and they are EVERYWHERE, so everytime you go in the ocean, although the chances are low, you always take the risk. I love the ocean, but I never go out farther than like 5 feet, which is where most attacks occur, but it gives me the best chance of defense should something arise. I hate when people say sharks are killers, because they are so not...

I want to swim with Great Whites one day....in a cage of course...:o

I feel the same way you do.

This girl was out something like 200-250 yards out. That is just too far for a young girl. It's asking for trouble.

I want to swim with Great Whites, too. I love them. :hearts:

Did you see the program on the Animal Planet [I think], where Great White experts went outside of the cage and swam with them? One guy actually grabbed onto the sharks fin and went for a lil ride.

OMG DecemberLove! I am in love with you, lol.

Yes I did, that was amazing. And that girl and guy got caught in between the shark and the cage, that was freaky. I'm currently looking up diving company websites in search of finding movie clips.

Maybe we can dive together. I'd be terrified. Like if the sharks were swimming in front of me, I'd be cool. But I would be constantly looking behind me and below and,, oo creepy. I also was just thinking about being in the cage and being swallowed by the expected "extinct" Megalodon....

I love Great Whites, can't wait for Shark Week. Did you ever see the footage of the woman attacked of the cruise ship where the shark bit her then she swam towards a rescuw boat and the GW came back and bit her leg off from the feamer (sp) down?

I also love hearing about attacks.

Oh and what did you think about the one they had in captivity in Monterey for 6 months?

It's so interesting how they all have their own personality. Some of them were very shy, but the one that trapped them was extremely agressive. Still, I think they have a bad reputation that they don't deserve.

It sucks, cos where we live, there isn't much shark activity. I want to go to South Africa and see them breach and then go in the cage! How amazing would that be?

Yes! That was

There was a supposed attack by a baby Great White right around where I go to the beach. I really don't think it was a GW, probably something like a large sand shark, and people are just overreacting. There are less people in the water now.

I read that shark finning will probably be banned in the eastern Pacific... great news.

I hate the thought of capitivity for Great Whites. They just aren't meant to be in capitivity, I don't care how big the ocean cage is. It's no wonder she grew too aggressive. I'm glad she survived, and they were able to release her, unlike the one that just recently died.

i dont hate sharks, but i dont love them either. maybe its just a misconception, but i'm scared of anything dangerous. BUT I would never want them harmed and i believe that if people are attacked, too bad. the ocean is their home. u wanna risk it, go ahead.

This was so sad. This happened about 45 minutes from where I live. There was mention the second sandbar was wiped out during hurricane Ivan and the sandbar was a "marker" for swimmers not to go past for the possibility of predator fish. And yes, this is too far to go out anyway.

It was the first attack in that area.

I saw sharks in Fort Lauderdale and a friend got bumped by a shark while surfing. its a known risk and sharks that attack, unless they are clearly rabid like that one in NJ was who knocked off several people years ago, should just be left alone.

i love the look of sharks...i'm just scared as fuck of them
i think i watched Jaws when i was too young :(
but when i went to Florida and to Sea World...i loved going through the Shark tunnel thing where they're all around...i'm too much of a scardy cat to go swimming with them, but they are beautiful creatures :)
and i tend to go places where you don't really get sharks...although i have been to Florida, as far as costal places go you don't really get sharks around the areas of Barbados and Mauritius i go to :)

I love sharks. They fascinate me. Especially Great Whites. I saw a documentary made by Ron and Valerie Taylor who are shark experts and it had footage of Valerie on a platform on a boat (her feet under the water) hand feeding a huge-ass Great White Shark. It was so bizarre. This so-called "Killing machine" was letting her hand feed it. He was begging for more food. And he let her pet him on the nose. He was literally letting her pet him and waiting for more food and he didn't rip it out of her hand... He was really gentle when it took it. Weird. She was saying how she felt that she could have got into the water with him and he wouldn't have tried to eat her... But she didn't try it out... Just incase!

Being attacked by a shark must be a horrible way to die but... If you're going to go into the ocean (espcially in places like Florida) you run the risk of being attacked! I go in the ocean when I'm in Florida and I'm always on the look-out for sharks but if I got attacked... It would be my own fault! I know the risks...

Sharks are so misunderstood. And they suffer a lot of cruelty and nobody cares because they aren't "cute".

It's a disgusting practice. They just throw the shark back into the water with no fin while it's still alive

Another attack: 16 year old attacked in waist deep water while fishing, leg had to be amputated but he will survive...
