NEW YORK (AP) -- Tom Cruise was all smiles talking about his movie and his fiancee on NBC's "Today" show, but the smile disappeared when Matt Lauer mentioned Cruise's earlier criticism of Brooke Shields for taking anti-depressants.

Cruise got very serious and kept saying "Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt" every time Lauer said he knew people who were helped by anti-depressants.

Shields took them for her post-partum depression. As a Scientologist, Cruise doesn't believe in those kinds of drugs or therapy of any kind.

At one point Cruise told Lauer, "you're glib" and didn't know what he was talking about. Cruise added, "you don't know the history of psychiatry, I do."

Ok, this does it, Cruise can oficially be certified now. :o

Really and truly, I'm expecting a meltdown soon, and Cruise will end up in the nuthouse or in rehab. In my mind, I still haven't ruled out a pill or cocaine problem. To me, he's showing all the signs.

I just thought of it, I think he's going to crack up like Mariah Carey did. He's going to do a few more public things that are strange. Then he's going to be "hospitalized" with "exhaustion" or something after flipping out at home.

At least poor old Mariah was nice about it, just some skanky clothes and some babbling about ice cream, swimming, and rainbows. We didn't have to listen to all this Scientology shit! And I think she was truly exhausted which made her nuts. I think Tom's just nuts.

And you know what, Mariah was right. Some days, all any of us really needs is to eat ice cream, go swimming, and watch rainbows.

Did anyone see Tom on 106 & Park. He was acting so weird, then Katie came out looking like she was homeless professing her love for Tom. I swear this has got to be the most craziest couple in Hollywood.

I wonder will he take a hit at the box office, this reminds me of how Ben lost his fans by over exposing himself with Jlo.

Tom should of kept his original PR person.

Did you see those rumors, I think it was on Fox News or something, that he has a no-sex contract with Katie HOlmes for like 5 million for 5 years and that Scarlett Johansenn, Lindsay Lohan and Jessica Alba all said no? Sounds wrong to me, but who knows these days.

I wonder what Nicole thinks of this...

The rag sheets that I've been reading (primarily the National Enquirer) say that she's really angry, does not approve, and is confused. The article says that Tom always taught Nicole NEVER to talk to the press about personal things and always stressed privacy in relationships and that you don't share these types of things with the media. She can't understand what's going on.

So he's read the history of psychiatry and now he's an expert? Now he feels that he has the right to tell people how to treat their illnesses? What an asshole! I guess if he believes in a religion that states that aliens populated the earth, anything is possible.

Personally, I think this is the real Tom. The old Tom was nothing more than a wonderful PR campaign successfully put together by a wiley publicist. I think Tom is a big control freak, particularly with his women. When Mimi, Nicole and Penelope wouldn't play ball, he immediately dumped them. I think he decided to choose a girl instead of a woman so he could have someone to control. All I can say to Katie is that a gilded cage is still a cage.

I think the movie will do well. It is a Spielberg film and that practically guarantees summer box office. Besides, I have really some really good reviews of the film on IMDB where people have admitted that even though Cruise's recent behavior is off-setting, that the film is great and that he does a fine job in it.

Personally, I will go and see the film because I am a big sci-fi fan, but someone really needs to tell Tom to shut up.

omg, I can't believe he went on 106 & Park!

He's really doing the advertising for this movie...btw, nothing is going to stop the success of this movie because one he's not the only big name....two it's a blockbuster action movie, three it's about aliens, and four the other big name is Spielburg (sp?)

Also, haven't watched the video but Tom should've refused to answer the question. However, if he did and then Matt kept on looking for controversy, I don't respect that either.

Also, I've heard some nasty things about the powers to be on the Today show so who knows. They fired a guy because he wanted to go on the Oprah show and talk about his kidney disease and surgery eventhough he let the today show do a segment first.

I like Tom Cruise movies and he is one of my favourite actors but he really is arrogant on the daily show or whatever Lauer's show is called' I know about psychiatry and its dangers, you don't' I somewhat agree with him on drugs but it is the abuses of drugs not the taking of drugs that is the danger. Also why is Holmes being filmed? They should not alway be exposed to the media like that. People will get tired of them.

So he's read the history of psychiatry and now he's an expert? Now he feels that he has the right to tell people how to treat their illnesses? What an asshole!

He lost it completely! He's so dumb about the subject and so patronizing, it almost seems like he's a scientist. He's not. He has dislexia and went through hell in school, so if he had benefitted from the medication dislexic kids have now, maybe he wouldn't be so sure about fixing everything with communication and exercise :retard: He clearly hasn't fixed his IQ. An intelligent person doesn't become a fanatic and doesn't dismiss other possibilities like this.

Tom looks like he's on drugs, he had a strange look even before the issue came up. He's going through that period in life, when he is not respected by his peers(he'll never win an Oscar) and he let the best woman on the planet go, Nicole, and he finally sees his mistake, but it's too late

Rocketta

I don't get the thought that Tom lost the best woman in the world...sorry...Nicole is a big bore and if she is happier without Tom she sure doesn't look it in interviews or maybe that's just her lack of personality. :o

I agree he should dial back the coverage of his relationship. However, there are many celebs who talk about their religion and he should have the right to as well even if we don't agree with him.

I don't put him and Katie in the same category as Bennifer because he didn't cheat on a wife to be with her....and Katie didn't take a full page ad in Variety to let Tom's significant other know that she was after him or should I say already had him. That relationship started at the bottom of the barrel.

Now if Tom and Katie are fake or if they don't love each other and are just f*cking they are grown and unattached it's ok. I don't plan to buy or go see a movie based on who's screwing who.

I think the whole Brad Pitt/ Angelina Jolie is much much much worse because either he cheated on his wife or they are playing a game and letting people believe he cheated on his wife just for the buzz to surround a movie...either way not nice to use Jennifer like that.

His facial contortions were a tad discomforting, and yes he's a definitely ditzy for a 42 year old.

I think what he's saying is that the key to true happiness in life is to seek a resolution to our problems, and not simply put them aside and forget about them, which is what some drugs may do to you. I agree to a large extent. His viewpoint was too extreme though, and seemed to exclude those with genuinue chemical and hormonal imbalances  It didn't help that he wasn't very coherent overall (but then many people aren't either), so maybe that's what detracted from his message about how drugs are not the best solution.

My friend's father countered that statement with a "He's not going through a midlife crisis, he's going through a LIFE crisis."

I always had a good opinion of Tom Cruise. I thought he was in some good movies and despite the Scientology he seemed like a cool guy. Then I read the Sports Guy on espn.com talking about him after the Oscars and how fake and over the top he was acting that night. It was something that was so obvious but something that I never really gave much though to until then. I have looked at him differently ever since then and his recent actions have definitely not stopped that. What a sad end to his legacy this whole endeavor will be.

I don't think this is funny at all. It's just sad to see how Tom, who's been a big Hollywood power since the 80s, has been steadily falling out of sorts since his divorce from Nicole. Whether it's the Scientology or a personal crisis, I feel more sorry for him than amused or disgusted.

All this he's doing - getting into arguments with the media and talk show hosts; doing all sorts of crazy stunts; and marrying for the *counts* 3rd time - are usually things that happen to people when they're in their late teens, 20s, and maybe in their early 30s. It's not the sort of thing that people go through in mid-life. It's very scary because it's really all mental. I never thought Tom would be such an unstable guy. I never would've believed Mariah Carey would have any 'breakdowns' (pun not intended) until I saw her in that video clip of 'Lover Boy' (hot, yes; sane, no).

I guess it all just shows that no matter how high up you get, there's a big risk that you're going to be brought down by something that money probably can't fix.

I hope he'll get out of this - I really do - but all this has made me think of Tom not in his 'Mission Impossible', 'Minority Report', 'Last Samurai' days, but as a headcase who needs a Dr. Phil moment QUICK SMART!

That is crossing the line....what now he's suppose to answer for why his marriage broke up years and years ago? Everybody says they are in love and should believe the person is the love of their life or why else would they get married? I can't imagine every celeb getting asked about an old wife/girlfriend when everyone knows they are with someone else. That was a foul question.

Tom's problem is that he has shown the media that he can be perturbed by their assinine questions and that's always bad because the media is evil and getting Tom agitated will be their only mission from now on.

Rocketta, that Australian 60 Minutes interview was taped a month prior to Tom going public about his relationship with Katie but shown a few weeks after that. The interviewer had no idea what Tom's relationship status was. I doubt even Tom knew which actress he was going to unveil at that point.

But what did Tom expect? Nicole is an Australian. Tom was being interview by an Australian journalist for a show that would be broadcast throughout Australia. A simple answer like "I'm not in love with Nicole anymore but we're still friends" or something like that would have sufficed.

The whole "religion" of $cientology is just so weird and wrong. Ron L. Hubbard is probably laughing his ass off at all these dim celebrities who are paying truckloads of money to support his organization. A lot of the theories sound like something out of a science fiction novel. It almost sounds like a satire on the Christian denominations that somehow got out of control that it ended up becoming a money-making scheme for Hubbard. Most of the principles of well-being are based on common sense that any counsellor or psychiatrist could recommend to anyone who was suffering from a crisis in confidence or lack of communication skills. But it's the theory on how man evolved from aliens and populated the earth that seems to tickle the funny bone.

um, but he was with Penelope for three years after Nicole, why would anyone think he was still in love with Nicole? Maybe if they did family vacations and lived next door to each other like Bruce Willis and Demi Moore but I don't get it. Regarding the Australian interview, I only saw bits and pieces of it, but I did see where the interviewer asked Tom about Nicole. From what I saw, the interviewer did not ask Tom whether or not Nicole was the love of his life. The interviewer asked Tom what the nature of his relationship with Nicole was at this time. Were they friendly or not friendly? Etc. I think that is a pretty fair question for a divorcee. All Tom had to say was yes, we are friendly for the kid's sake or no, I don't want to answer that because that is a personal question. Tom has been in this business for a long time. He KNOWS how to act in an interview.
