Spaniards stage anti-gay protest http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4106890.stm

Thousands of people have taken to the streets of Madrid to protests against government moves to legalise marriage for same sex couples.

The protest is being led by Roman Catholic bishops and members of the conservative opposition Popular Party.

Over 500 buses were laid on to ferry people to Madrid, along with special flights from the Canary Islands and Spanish areas in Morocco.

In April the lower house voted for gay couples to marry and adopt children.

Sweeping changes

The Vatican condemned the bill, which if also passed by the Spanish Senate, will make Spain the first European country to allow homosexuals to marry and to adopt children.

The head of the Vatican's Pontifical Council on the Family, Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo, denounced the legislation as profoundly iniquitous.

When Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero took office over a year ago, he made it clear he intended to remove what he called the Church's undeniable advantages and make Spain a secular state.

Mr Zapatero has indicated that he also intends to streamline divorce law and even to relax the conditions placed on abortion.

Resistance

Opinion polls suggest that a majority of Spaniards support the gay marriage and adoption bill.

However, the move has met resistance in the predominantly Roman Catholic nation, with several Spanish mayors saying that they will refuse to marry same sex couples if the bill becomes law.

The march has been organised by the Spanish Forum for the Family (FEF), a lay Catholic group, whose slogan for the march is "The family is important. For the right to have a mother and father. For liberty".

Gay and lesbian groups are staging their own counter protest a short distance from the march to voice their support for the bill.

It's nice to know that they don't have anything better to do. I hope they all had fun!

Majority of people are in favour of this law here in Spain.
But of course there are a lot of people who don't want it , but at the same time in Madrid, Carlinhos Brown made a big concert where the people supported the gay marriage and there were more people there so...

Good for the Spanish government. Maybe I should move to Spain (not that I want a gay marriage :D , but any government that genuinely wants to create a secular state is fine by me).

I always thought Spain was a largely Catholic country, but I guess people are alot more liberal than I expected.

At the same token though, this does go against Catholic beliefs, so it's really not so surprising there was protest.

I do and don't understand the protesting. Isn't premarital sex against their beliefs too? Where's the outrage over that? Is it just like, assumed that they don't have it? What about those of us who do or plan on it? Shouldn't they be protesting this somewhere? Shouldn't we lose our legal rights for something or another as a result of our sinful behaviours? :p

Yes, this sounds stupid. But so do these protests to me.

Those people are just fucking right wing bigots. Spain's always gonna have a large minority of vocal conservative catholic idiots, it's just the cross they have to bear. But nobody really takes them seriously any more anyway.

We'd already decided to get married next year, but seeing these twats on the news gave us extra incentive. I hope it really sticks in their throats.

As for all that "right to a mother and a father" bullshit - since when?! Hardly any kid grows up in a nuclear family these days!

Can't they? Don't invite them to try.

Spain will have gay marriage. Kudos.

I totally agree, Miss Becky. Jesus tells us that no one sin is worse than another. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. Homosexual behavior might be wrong, but so is a whole lot of crap that I've done. I believe God forgives me, so why wouldn't he forgive gay people (assuming it is, in fact, immoral behavior, which Jesus himself never says, though Paul does.)?
