View Full Version : My freaaaakinggg Laptop won't detect external drives?!

Jun 16th, 2005, 12:15 PM
Why is it that my laptop does not detect any external drives anymore - ie when you attach a pen-drive or an external DVD drive, it just does not DETECT IT. What should I do? It used to work until I reformatted my laptop. Urgh.

enter into safe mode upon boot.
run anti virus.

I need to know:

Computer Manufacturer --- Dell, Gateway, generic?
Operating System ---You said XP, but is that 'Home Version' or 'Professional'? And is that with the SP2 (Service Pack) release?
Manufacturer of External Drive --- Conners, Sony, etc..?
Incorrect Driver version --- This is usually the problem with most non-detectable devices. Either that, or the device is not a recognized brand on an XP system. You may also have the incorrect driver or require a driver update.
Access the Disk manufacturer's web site and see if your specific drive has a driver for an XP operating system. Sometimes an OS update will cause this problem.

Let's start there and see where we end up. ;)

computer manufacturer - toshiba
operating system - XP Pro
External drive - sandisk (pen drive), iomega (DVD drive)

previously they both have worked before on my laptop so they are automatically detected. I don't know why after I reformatted my laptop it doesn't detect the drives anymore

This happened to me when I was setting up a dell laptop at work. It would say the usb drivers were installed and working correctly but on a whim I decided to go to dell's website and download the drivers. The whole chipset (usb, motherboard, etc.) had been updated. I installed it and it worked. So, you might want to reinstall the drivers even if you think you have the latest one.

But my Sandisk driver didn't come with any installation CD/software as it says that it is automatically detected on XP systems...

THen you should definitely check the Sandisk website for the drivers. Just remember to save them to a place that you can remember where they are. ;)
