Jackson to return as Lakers head coach

Tue Jun 14, 2:38 PM ET

Phil Jackson is to be re-appointed head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, the NBA team said on Tuesday.

Jackson resigned from the post a year ago and did not coach during the 2004-2005 season. He led the Lakers to three NBA championships during his five years in charge.

The Lakers will hold a news conference later on Tuesday to announce the re-appointment.

The 59-year-old coach stepped down shortly after the team's shock defeat to the Detroit Pistons in the 2004 NBA Finals.

The Lakers struggled under his replacement Rudy Tomjanovich, who resigned in February citing ill health, and subsequently under long-time Jackson assistant Frank Hamblen.

The team failed to make the playoffs this year with an unimpressive 34-48 record, only the fifth time in the franchise's 58-year history they had missed out on post-season play.

Jackson's departure followed a rift with the team's All Star guard Kobe Bryant.

Jackson characterized Bryant as "a callous gun for hire" and the epitome of the selfish modern player in a book which chronicled his final season in charge of the team.

Bryant re-signed with the team following Jackson's departure but the team's other superstar, center Shaquille O'Neal, was traded to the Miami Heat.

Jackson, dubbed the "Zen Master" for his interest in Eastern philosophy and unorthodox methods of handling players, also coached the Chicago Bulls to six NBA championships.

This is a shocker to me!

First I don't think it will work because Kobe is still too selfish even if he's the center of the triangle offense and two, I bet Phil got one heck of a raise. :hehehe:

Phil must really have a sweet piece of ass still living in LA. I don't see any other reason he would be going back there with Kobe.

Oh I can see how he would love to go back and rub it in Kobe's face. Not only does Kobe still have to run his offense but Phil probably got a nice raise too! :hehehe:

Good for him :) After all those years in the music industry, I think Michael needed that change :)

 Now, that's a shocker. Especially after the turmoil of the "Kobe" years.
Even if he is back as the coach, I'm still not rooting for the Lakers anymore. :p

And I'll bet that Phil gets basically full control, meaning no more Kupchak as GM, and West no more than a figurehead President. BTW Rocky (trivia Q's, no lookups allowed) who actually invented the triangle offense he employed to win 6 titles in Chicago? Who were Michael and Scottie's main collaborators for the first 3-peat, and for the second?

He is dating the owner of the Lakers' daughter. So maybe that's why. Plus 10 million a year isn't too shabby.

After reading Phil's book I think Kupchak is an ass and Kobe is a selfish ass!
I'm sure his girlfriend,Jeanie Buss (dad owns the lakers) is happy again.
I can't wait to see what kind of team they will assemble.

Just the way to inflate Phil Jackson's already enormous ego. When will management realize that Kobe and Phil's ego's together will be a disaster.

I don't like Kobe anymore. Too arrogant and selfish for my liking. Basketball's a team sport. :(

Phil Jackson must REALLY like this girlfriend of his to go back and work with that giant egomaniac-Kobe.

I think this is a great move for the Lakers. Phil and KB8 can co-exist and if LO and KB8 can get on the same page in the triangle offense they will be tough to beat because anyone who knows basketball know that KB8 and LO present matchup problems for everyone in the league. I'm not saying this because I'm a Lakers fan because in reality I can't stand them, but Imagine how great next year will be in the NBA with a improved Lakers team. Imagine that fight for the 4-8 spots in the West, every team has gotten better and the excitement will be great for the NBA.

Remember that story from like a year ago about the Clippers owner having to testify in a deposition about some woman he paid to have sex with him a bunch of times? He was saying she was the best he ever had and that she sucked his toes and licked his feet and stuff in his office before she got down to business. But then she'd ask for more than he bargained for payment-wise and once asked for a "bonus" of a fur coat around the holidays, but he turned her down every time, a deal's a deal he would say.

It's a crazy world in the NBA!
