Andrew Murray was one of nine Britons to get a wildcard for Wimbledon, just hours after recording his first ATP Tour win at Queen's Club.

The 18-year-old Scot, who beat Santiago Ventura on Monday, will be joined by Josh Goodall, Alan Mackin, Jonathan Marray and David Sherwood.

Elena Baltacha, Amanda Janes, Anne Keothavong and Katie O'Brien were the British women handed wildcards.

Other wildcards went to Cara Black, Jelena Dokic and Mark Philippoussis. Three more women and two more men will be announced later.

Pretty much they seem okay. Although a bit surprised to see Katie O'Brien getting one, she's not done that well over the past few weeks.

Jelena Dokic was always going to get one, but why Cara Black? She'll just get whipped surely?

I would expect one of the remaining 3 to be given to Chanda Rubin.

The other 2 will go to the winner and runner-up of the LTA Play-off which begins tomorrow.

Cara Black - the good old United Kingdom rules ... I wonder about Dokic though. Change of nationality again? ;)

Black won two doubles junior events, one singles junior, doubles and mixed doubles in Wimbledon :o :p

Her Wimbledon record is impresive...

Cara won last year both doubles and mixed doubles in Wimbledon

In junior competition she was both singles and doubles winner in Wimbledon '97 :worship:

She has played the singles tournament 7 times reaching the 3rd round twice

She's world #2 in doubles right now

Still a weird choice to award that WC to her but no doubt she's a familiar face for organisers and public there :)

Black deserves it. She's still trying to get herself playing well in singles. Huber is a good partner for her because she doesn't play much if any singles and will probably play any doubles tourni Black request if it will help Cara get better in singles.
I hope the other one goes to Chanda and I'm sure Dokic will play as good as she can with that wildcard. This is a big chance for all of them. A player like Randiantety, Pennetta, Safina, Sugiyama (who played good on grass last year but is still struggling) are vulnerable on grass.

Jelena. Im so glad she didnt skip the grass court season. Play amazing. :hearts:

I hope Blake gets one of the other wildcards. His mom is British after all and he has been playing good lately.

Martina Navratilova is playing singles at s'Hertogenbosch. I think she is playing singles there to get match practice for Wimbledon so expect her to get one of the other WC's if she wants it.

Cara has good results at Wimbly. I'm glad she got one, but I'm thinking she might have been better off winning come matches in qualies...Still, if she was going to get some good wins, it would be here. Grass is her best surface.

I thought Dokic was taking another 6 weeks off to "get fit".

I bet Martina N. gets one of the remaining WC's.

why the delay in giving Chanda Rubin a wildcard?? I mean she is surely getting one or else it is really f**ked up if she doesn't. I am thinking she must know already that she is getting one as she is commited to playing at Eastbourne rather than try the Wimbledon qualifying at Roehampton.

I think Brenda Schultz , Chanda Rubin and Martina Navratilova should be the last wild cards (utopic but why not ? ) maybe they're waiting for them to accept or refuse them ?
Good for Cara, hope she wins a couple of matches, she really needs it.

Brenda is taking a qualifying wild card I think.

Sort of surprised they're not giving Jane O'Donoghue a wild card seeing as she did really well at a couple of challengers in Japan recently and won a round at Wimbledon last year. Perhaps they're throwing her in the playoff since they expect her to clean up in it, and if not she can get a qualifying wild card.

It seems like Rubin and Navratilova are good bets for the last two wild cards, perhaps maybe Webley-Smith or Llewelyn will get in if they feel like giving one of the wildcards to a Brit or if Chanda is still injured.

It would be a bit off if they only gave the winner of the playoff a maindraw WC this year, I hope they give one to the winner and runner up.

No Navratilova please :help: She can go through qualies

Perhaps Rubin didn't ask for one? (one can hope that hers will go to Karen ;))

Don't be so sure if Jela faces Emmanuelle Gagliardi in R1

I'm not worried about it at all, I'm just happy that she'll play there, she already missed 2 GS's this year and I really wanted her to play a major this season.

And please, no comparisons, Jelena doesn't need to prove anyone she's a much more talented player than Cara Black :hearts: ;) :wavey:

In my opinion she does. Jelena has a 17-6 history in Wimbledon, while Cara has only a 5-7 :tape:
Okay, okay, she had great results in doubles and in juniors, but this is a singles tournament. If we have to think in this way, give a WC to Stubbs as well  :o

The Australian, who lost to Roger Federer (http://www.sportsline.com/tennis/players/playerpage/219927) in the 2003 final, has struggled with injuries in recent months and slumped to No. 189 in the rankings.

After losing to Tim Henman (http://www.sportsline.com/tennis/players/playerpage/201538) in the fourth round last year, Philippoussis failed to win for the rest of the year. The former eighth-ranked player has managed just two victories in 2005.

Five more wild cards went to British players, including Andrew Murray, (http://www.sportsline.com/tennis/players/playerpage/551068) the 2004 U.S. Open junior champion and 2005 French Open junior semifinalist.

Cara Black (http://www.sportsline.com/tennis/players/playerpage/201618) of Zimbabwe, who won both the ladies and mixed doubles titles at Wimbledon in 2004, has also received a wild card.

Former semifinalist Jelena Dokic, (http://www.sportsline.com/tennis/players/playerpage/201640) who made Wimbledon history on her debut in 1999 by upsetting No. 1 Martina Hingis (http://www.sportsline.com/tennis/players/playerpage/201658) in the first round, has received a wild card into the qualifying event. Once ranked No. 4, she has now slumped to 364th.

Richard Krajicek, (http://www.sportsline.com/tennis/players/playerpage/201551) who won the Wimbledon singles title in 1996, has been given a wild card into the mixed doubles, where he will partner sister Michaela, the 2004 U.S. Open junior champion.

Five more wild cards are due to be announced later.

Maybe because quallies are played before main draw. :p

And the fact that everyone else in the article got a main draw WC yet they specifically tagged Jelena as the only one who got a qually WC isn't a good sign (if you want her to be in the main draw).

It's better that she has to go through quallies anyways. Jelena gets better with match wins.

But wouldn't main draw wildcards be released first so people can decide on if they are going to enter the qualifying draw or take the wildcard?

Most players who are offered a main draw WC won't turn it down to play quallies.

Jane O'Donoghue secured a main draw wild card today. She won the wild card play off event beating Rebecca Llewellyn 6-2 6-3 in the final. There's a chance Rebecca could also make the main draw by making the final. Glad to see Jane getting through - she won a round in the main draw last year and couldn't afford not to get the chance to defend those points.
