A 15-year-old Hingis defeated world number one Steffi Graf, who had won the last three GS tournaments she had played and would win the next three GS tournaments she had played in the Italian Open in Rome on clay. Furthermore, Graf was the reigning RG champion at the time and would go on to win another RG title as well as add a Wimbledon and US Open title to her collection. Clearly, Steffi was at her peak and lost to a 15-year-old Hingis who had turned pro less than 18 months ago. :tape:

Bet somebody will come in and reply. As for M. Hingis same goes for Seles. One of the best things in women's tennis what could happen. When M. Hingis came to the tour women's tennis was raised to a higher level.

I'm expecting someone to have something to say about this too....:)

I won't say who, but it's taken him longer than I thought it would:)

We know who you're expecting to come in, but how on earth can you bash calimero's threads praising Steffi when people do exactly the same kind of thing as in this thread. You can't have yer cake.....

Hm... to begin, if Seles wasn't stabbed Graf would have lets say...7 less grand slams (assuming Seles beat her maybe 7 out of 10...in 1993-1996 Graf won 10 slams WHILE SELES WAS OUT)

So crunching more numbers... Monica may have played say...13 or 14 slams and won maybe 9 of them... bringing the totals of Graf to 15, and Seles to 18

GRAFS GS TITLES WERE VERY CONDITIONAL BASED ON SELES' ABSENCE

Now Martina Hingis... if she could have pulled out ONE of those finals (vs. Graf, Majoli, Capriati) then she'd be up to 6... and winning AO2002 would give her more confidence... maybe not forcing her to retire... Hingis would win 8 GS's max I think
