Well, that's because they are commentating on American television. They are supposed to not say what they really believe in favor of a pro-American slant.

no i don't think so, Jonny doesn't seem disrespectful towards them usually, mary is a different story, she is always talking bad about them.

Serena maybe, but Venus needs to change her mentality if she really wants to do something good

Well, that's because they are commentating on American television. They are supposed to not say what they really believe in favor of a pro-American slant.I believe there may be something else entirely happening behind the scenes because neither one likes the Williamses. Maybe they are hurting for ratings, and are looking to appeal to that demographic that has been tuning out due to their constant slamming of the sisters. That would be the most logical explanation.
I just find it curious and disingenuous that they are now saying anything positive about Venus and Serena, since both V & S are appearing to lose interest in tennis. There is always an alternative reason when someone who's normally slamming you suddenly has something nice to say.

I think you are just noticing it now when they say bad things about the Williams', but not thinking about the past. I lived through many years of Hingis bashing from American commentators, and then they would talk about how wonderful Venus and Serena are and how they have changed the game and there will never be anyone like them. They went on like that for years.

They were promoted by the media as an entertaining curiosity and novelty items, but rarely were they ever discussed in a positive manner. In fact, most of the early discussions of V & S centered around Richard. So nice try, but no Fig Newton. ;)

I think some of you challenged individuals should read John McEnroe's book, "You Cannot Be Serious". John talks about having dinner with Richard Williams.

Everyone else in the world can see the decline in Venus and Serena's game in the past 5-6 months. Why can't commentators discuss it????

Why should Venus and Serena Williams receive a pass in that regard????

I think Carillo and McEnroe were being overly positive about both sisters chances at Wimbledon. So what's your problem this time?

No actually I have to say you are wrong on this one. Television commentators ALWAYS had good things to say in that 1998-2002 period. They found nothing wrong with V & S then.

Anyone who would ever write off a Williams sister from any event, let alone one held on the lawns of Wimbledon, would be very foolish. Yes, they may be battling with injuries and/or off-court distractions, but they both LOVE playing at Wimbledon, and are both former Champions. Like Mary Pierce at the French, I wouldn't be surprised if both girls raised their games and made some serious headway into the draw, regardless of their recent results. Watch this space....

Ummmmmmm...I think Mary and John were being realistic. A Williams has been in the finals of Wimbledon for the past 5 years. Serena reached the finals last year not even playing at her best. I'm sure she'll be hungry and ready this year to get her crown back.

yea i agree that i think they were being Serious because otherwise Mary would have been like Serena is distracted blah blah blah and Venus's game is a mess blah blah blah and Maria is just the best so she will win lol.

btw, this came from the broadcast of the mens final on Nbc as they were doing a preview for the All England Club.

sorry i have to disagree with you on this part. When the sisters came out with their bright beaded hair, they were considered more than just a curiosity because they had the goods to back up their flair. Commentators were CONSTANTLY talking about how good Venus' game was and how she was sure to dominate for years to come (that was until Serena picked up her game and took over) Then all commentators could talk about was how the Williams sisters were creating great rivalries and blowing the others (ie Lindsay & Hingis) off the court.

then again this is all that i remember hearing so perhaps we just tuned in at different times lol

The truth is there was always something to pick on the sisters until the end of 2001. There was no denying that everything they had ever said had come true, and that they were by far the two best players in the world. Many of those commentators had nothing bad to say cause there was absolutely nothing bad to say, they were forced to grudgingly accept the sisters' dominance. Now who cares what they say, Venus and Serena have already proven themselves as great champions, and they never said anything their results said it all.

Yeah, Hingis used to get bashed to no end by the commentators, and Pam Shriver especially, who was always up the Williamses arse. Now Hingis is given nothing but praise and is brought up in just about every major women's tennis broadcast... the media loves to build people up, then tear them down, then build them up, then tear them down...

John McEnroe has said many negative about the women's tour in general and I still have no idea why he's even in the booth during a women's match (except I guess to annoy ME  ) I literally turn the volume down when he's on the air during a women's match because he's full of shit, if I may say so. :o So, anyways, I didn't hear this conversation but stating the obvious hardly makes John a genius (Mary is close to one, mind you :p ). All the big hitters will do well at Wimbledon. ;)

That's stupid conclusion especially since Lindsay will also be in the draw. They didn't have to say anything about the WS if it was all about pro-American slant. Especially since Linds is No. 1
