View Full Version : Mary pure class in defeat....

Not sure how many Slam finals I have actually got teary eyed over the loser of the match. But I sure did today.

Was really sad to see Mary attempt to overcome obvious grief in her destruction against Justine today.

Still, Mary showed what a great champion she has been especially in this tournament. God Bless her and I hope this defeat does not hinder her from at least doing well the rest of 2005.

I am in 100% agreement. I think Mary's a great person and player, Justine was just too good.

I cried, I feel really sorry for Mary.

She was really emotional and heart-warming.
truly, runner-up fits her perfectly, as she was the second best in the tournament (the opposite of the men's tourny, for example, where the semi between nadal and federer seems like the real clash for the title, and not the final tomorrow).
at one moment, i thought she's going to anounce retirement, that would have been REALLY sad
 next time around girl :)

What do you have against Mary? She's 30 years old, and had to endure an abusive father and multiple injuries. This is most likely her last time in a grand slam final! Geez!

Her speech was better than ther match that shows you !
"vous êtes géniale.." :o LOL
ahh Mary, we're used to your french now, that's ok. :)

I agree that Mary struggling to control her emotions before her speech actually gave me a few tears in my eyes...i have been through highs and lots of lows with Mary since i first saw her play in the 1990 french against Mary Joe Fernandez when she was a tall skinny girl with glasses hitting punishing groundstrokes left and right.....congrats mary on a great fortnight and your speech topped the match play itself:)

it's hard to speak properly when one is so emotional plus "géniaux" is a pretty ugly sounding word :p

I felt for Mary too. She was very classy in defeat, hugging Justine and she was obviously sad that she could not bring her best tennis to the court today. Mary can be proud of herself though.

I was crying like a baby the first minute I saw Mary wiping tears and sobbing by the end of her speech. The most heartfelt real loss I've ever seen by a runner-up, but still giving such credit to Justine and accepting the loss as what was to be. I'm really proud of who Mary has become much more than how many trophys she has won. She is truly a winner.

I really like Mary's smile at the beginning of the game. I don't see what the fuss was with the time taken.

Mary was magnificent and was all heart - although she was unable to bring her game today - the tears showed how much this tournament meant to her. In the twilight of her career - this was just so unexpected, and special. A wonderful player, and great fun to watch. I wish her the best for Wimbledonxx

at first i thought she crying because she was so happy to have made it that far, but i felt touched that she felt like it was the noble responsibility to bring out her best tennis today which unfortunately she couldn't :(

congrats on making it this far mary!

Yeah, she reacted in a very graceful way. This must be a huge disappointment, you don't get that many chances once you're 30 to be in a Slam final.

Actually interesting that they failed to bring up this was one of the most lopsided finals ever (as they made a huge deal last year, and this year was even worse)

I don't know what commentary you got but eurosport did bring it but believe it was longer than the 1988 final :o .
Anyway Big up to Mary she couldn't find it today but has had a great 2 weeks.
Justine at least we know you are human DF in last game ;) .

All that graciousness mmmm. I would have prefered some effort from her to compete today than to hear a gracious speech over a very horrible loss.

Mary...congratulations by reaching the final

Justine is just too good today, but you have finish this RG 2005 with your great achievement :) your ranking UP by more than 10 places to #13 :) well done Mary :)

and Justine, congratulation to you too, we all know and predicted you will be one of the strong contender to win (without any doubt, and you deserved to win) you played exceptionally well during the entire tournament, wins your 4th GS titles and 4th Titles this season after comeback from injuries, this is a remarkable achievement ever! :)

I have one damn question to ask?
WHY ARE THE FRENCH SO EFFIN CONCERNED WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT FRENCH BORN SPEAKING "GOOD FRENCH".
Us English speaking are so grateful for any attempts at English and dont feel the need to denigrate non perfect Engles!
Mon Diu
Get a damn life u French and do something about those strikes all the damn time!

I've always loved Mary :D

Watching her in the final made me realise that I like her now for the same reasons that I liked her in 2000. She still has that same personality on court, like smiling and taking her time on court. For many this is annoying, but for me it shows that she really appreciates the moment. Her actions boost the drama on court for the viewers, and you really feel the importance of the match and the moment.

Mary was so moving and touching. It was so sad to see her cry but at the same time Im very happy for her that she found some of her marks again in her previous matches. She is just a sweet person, very nice and classy, always smiling when she hits a good shot and that is nice to see. She is one of the only players that shows howmuch they love and appreciate playing tennis. Anyways great speech and great tournament mary, keep on playing great!
