Navratilova beaten in mixed doubles final
(adds quotes)
PARIS, June 3 (Reuters) - Martina Navratilova missed out on a 59th grand slam title on Friday when she and Indian partner Leander Paes were beaten in the French Open mixed doubles final.
The pair lost 3-6 6-3 6-2 to Frenchman Fabrice Santoro, who had never won a title at Roland Garros, and Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova.
The 48-year-old Navratilova, who needs four more titles to equal the 62 of Margaret Court, looked on course for victory after taking the first set.
But Santoro and Hantuchova, who beat four seeded pairs en route to the final, came back strongly to level the match and then reeled off six games in a row in the decider.
"It's my 16th time competing at Roland Garros," said the 32-year-old Santoro. "A title in Paris is great.
"I can tell you, I held up the trophy...and it's something that's very important for me and in my career."

It is nice for Santoro to win a title at his home slam. Congrats to the winning pair. I am so sad for Paes/Navratilova, though. The match wasn't shown on TV 'cos it was played at the same time as Nadal/Federer.

Fab/Dani went 3-1 up in the first set, having broken Paes in the opening game but then Lee/Martina reeled off 5 games in a row to take the first set. The second went with serve in a series of really tight games until the 8th game, when Martina was broken for the first time in the match. Dani served out to level the match. In the third, Lee and Martina went 2-0 up and had game-points in several other games but Fab and Dani held firm to win the last 6 games in a row.

For Martina, the event means that she's now made it to a doubles final in all four grand slam events 2003-2005 - with mixed wins in Oz and Wimbledon and final defeats at RG in the mixed and Flushing Meadow in the women's doubles. Hopefully, she and Leander will manage to lift a third trophy together either at Wimby or the US Open.

:worship: Well done Martina. It's all well and good coming back for fun, but it's more fun when you have come back and are doing well where it counts at the Slams. Good luck to Martina/Leander at Wimbledon.

Happy for Dani of course but also happy for Fabrice. I am glad he won a title at the French in his career as he is so talented and it's great to watch all of his slices and spins. Would have been a nice final to watch.
