View Full Version : Why do people feel the need...

Davenselesport

To defend their favorite players?

You don't know them...
They don't know who you are...
They have done nothing personally for you...

Don't take critical comments about a player personally- its just not needed and causes problems. You have a right to like a player but other than that?

If someone will enlighten me?

well thats beacuse we are fans..

Of course its irrational ,but when does life ever make sense ,people have their faves and they defend them ,i see no probs with that ,the only thing i DO NOT like is unneeded nastiness when a player loses ,enjoying others sadness seems mean to me.

I mean whats the point of watching if ya couldnt careless about the players ,you need areason to cheer and its normal nature for people to react when someone is mean about there fave ,although some do over react ,thats is true!

I doubt posters take critical comments against their faves personally, it's just who you like. If someone criticizes your favorite band or type of music you defend it.

I guess I know what ya mean, but some people are HUGE fans of their faves and you can't really expect anything less.

Half the time it's not even about the players.

In some arguments you'll find, posters are reacting to other posters, and not necessarily the subject matter. The players do matter and we take up for them, but once you open up a post you know the tone and probably the content before it's done downloading the page.

If someone was to attack my fav, Venus or Serena, then i would say something.

I dont no why, i guess i feel like because i am a big fan that i should say something, and that i have every right to.

Maybe we should be asking why there is a need to defend the player?

And you don't know if these people do take it personally but what you do know is that this is a Tennis board. To talk about players and tennis etc. so.........................

There's a human need for validation and justification. When we do something, we want others' approval. We want people to like the same things that we do, or at least to understand why we like them. It's not just tennis players many of us feel that way about-- it goes for sports teams, musicians, artists, and even countries. When they get criticized, we often feel a need to defend them. Perhaps there's an axiom in there-- "what you like is what you are." The things that we enjoy are a big part of what makes each of us an individual-- and yet, paradoxically, we want others to like the same things.

On a related note, has anyone here ever had to defend the sport of tennis itself, beyond defending individual players?

Davenselesport
Jun 3rd, 2005, 06:58 PM
Defending tennis would be different... I play tennis... however I do not know/relate to say, Elena Dementieva.

I have like loads of fans there who try to defend all my crappy Lifetime TV and cable movies as "art" and "Helen really knows how to pick scripts." It's so thick in there, Helen needs boots! Let's face it, I'm a washed up old hag cashing in on my past to make a fabulous living into my old age. This shit I do, the Bonny Lee Bakely movie, the Terri Shiavo movie, it's shit, it's crap, it's no good, I'm there for one reason, and one reason only. The bucks! I'd dress like a chicken and travel the world if the money was right. I got my Oscar 46 years ago, and now it's all about the bucks, and nothing but the bucks. I don't care about art anymore. I sometimes just want to post that on ampasworld.com, but I don't want to offend my thousands of adoring fans with the truth. You don't wake a sleepwalker!

You can watch how a player behaves on- and off-court. Whether she is a humble person or a arrogant one. You can follow her way when she fights adversity of all sorts.

And another point:
I never met Hitler or Stalin. Nevertheless I hate them.
And I never met Chirac, Hillary Clinton or Michael Moore. I dislike them strongly however.
And I have never met George W. Bush, Condi Rice or Angela Merkel (the new German chancellor). Nevertheless I like them. I like their style, their values and what they do.
It is as simple as that.

On some levels, but you cannot really know a person by watching them play tennis or being interviewed. In this life there are alot of people with '2 faces' so unless you personally know someone, why get so obssessed?

I never take what anybody says about any of my favourites personally. I have no need to live my life vicariously through another person.

There are some people who post on here that can have a laugh with you whenever you say anything about their favourites, and they know you are not being insulting towards them.

Personally I only watch the tennis for tennis. What a player does with her own time, that's up to her, I couldn't care less. Cause once they've left the court I care about them as much as they care about me.

Well I'm just wondering where this passion comes from... and why?

Clinical Psychologists explain this phenomena as a mechanism of compensation. Start with a person with severe deficits in self-steem and accomplishments. Then this deficit is filled by living vicariously, i.e, through an intense identification with the achievements of some idealized other. This is an intense process in which the self fuses strongly with the chosen object of adoration. In the fantasized psychic life of the person, the two are the same or very closed buddy/lovers. They talk to each other intimately often. If continued to a further unhealthy level, these fans become the stalkers we read in the press about while being led to jail or it might lead to some form of schizophrenia.
The level of idealized fusion with the object is a very strong psychic force,so much that any attempt at separation from the object or any perceived slights against it, is met with extreme rage or even violence in a face to face situation. Psychoanalysts called this process: Cathexis. The main problem for them is that reality impinges continually on their core-self,making it fragile with intense feelings of disintegration. This should explain the irrational responses you see from many posters who are more interested in the life of their chosen celebrities rather than on the game itself.

This is an excellent thread, and makes me think of what somebody or other posted on the (official) kournikovarated.com board about 3 years ago, when I'd occasionally bait those "voluntary slaves" just for fun. (Sorry, Holly). :p

The poster said roughly ".... so what can we do to show Anna more support"? I almost fell off my chair laughing. The board there was going to hell in a handbasket due to inattention from Terra Lycos.

Anna wouldn't even occasionally post, much less write a check to cover some expenses. And the posters were literally "supporting her" (buying tons of her calendars and exercise videos, the latter probably not to excercise with "as instructed"). :o

And yet they had this totally stupid, moronic, imbecilic idea that THEY owed HER, not the other way around. Peppering Patty is NOT all that much fun, because I know the pain her family (especially her mother) has been put through by the 2 Rainer's.

Attacking Anna the ovarated welfare queen was, largely BECAUSE her slaves couldn't understand how anyone, especially a straight white male, failed 2C that a girl who'd be just another blonde on many beaches had become a Goddess thru her unsuccessful (on court) tennis career.

I think the safe answer is, they feel what they feel because they/we all have a connection to that player. There is something or things that they specifically relate to in certain players.
It's almost like asking "Why do we like?

I remember writing a reply in the non-tennis section about how is it that people can love something that can't love them back? A song. Ice cream. A particular color. It's possible that posters really don't love these things, but since it's the strongest known emotion we have, we tend to express our emotions to the Nth degree about anything we greatly like or admire.

To defend their favorite players?

You don't know them...
They don't know who you are...
They have done nothing personally for you...

Don't take critical comments about a player personally- its just not needed and causes problems. You have a right to like a player but other than that?

If someone will enlighten me?

Because we all like a good fight ;)

The only place I justify hostility is in defense of Mankind's greatest values such as freedom, equality, knowledge and the rights of people to defend themselves against invaders and torturers.
Calimero is on record supporting the hyperpowers that trample upon these ideals, therefore my hostility.

[QUOTE=Jakeev]Hey Cris Senior the next time you see a hole in the ground how stepping into it huh? There is no poster around her any more sanctimonious than the crap you spew round here.

By the way this is a tennis forum not Psych101. And for that matter, since you did not read the what I was responding to, I take it Reading Comprehension seems to be lacking in your life so perhaps you need to take some of those classes while you at it........or perhaps you just need a good old fashion ENEMA!!!!!!!!!!!![/QUOTE

I wasn't posting any sanctimonious stuff at all. Sanctimony refers to personal lecturing, which is what YOU do. Any one with moderate education would recognize that what I wrote was just a summary of the standard interpretation on the subjec,t by modern clinical psychology, based on old Freud, the school of Object Relations and recent neuro-psy.
Speaking of reading comprehension, you are also wrong in elementary missing that the thread is obviously about the psychology of fanaticism. This forum has people with different levels of education and it shouldn't be an occasion for you to lash with vile at others because they question your ability to speak on behalf of 2 billion people and reason in terms of trite expressions..
Also people who really know about the sport of tennis, also know about the intimate connection between tennis and psychology. Many players even have a personal sports psychologist.
In what respect to ENEMAS!!!!!!!, well, they seem to be your toy thing, so I'll leave them for your personal private entertainment.
Although perhaps you might need a mental enema, which I am sure your nearest hospital can provide you with in their PSY unit.

I stick by what I say oh "wise one." YOU NEED AN EMEMA.......LIKE LAST YEAR!!!!

And I will kindly remind you again this is a tennis forum not a political fuck-fest for you to talk about, quite frankly, unintelligible warblings that nobody (except for perhaps your equally disturbed counterpart Calimiero) particularly cares about.

Now, when you have any actual interesting comments to say about tennis, perhaps some of us will actually take you seriously........

You are a queen of cynicism! I just reread your posts above and you haven't talked about tennis at all! All you did was argue with Bree (speaking of personal polemics!) and pontificate about personal psychology in a pedestrian, run of a mill, trite discourse. I also only remember you from posting on other threads, not about tennis, but on rabid, paranoid, incoherent, bilious attacks on supposed "haters" of the Williams Sis.
In addtion,I couldn't care less about your little Napoleon pretentions of dictating what people can talk about in the Forum. First it was you prohibiting Psychology. When I showed you that that was what you also was doing, then you switched to politics. Let me remind you that there's something called freedom of speech and I won't allow twerps like you to take it away from anyone!
That what I write seems to you unintelligible, doesn't surprise me. I actually see it as a compliment.
Finally, once again, keep your obssesion with ENEMAS!!! private. Go and play with them, maybe it will calm you down; I am sure is a favorite old thing of yours.
And,by the way, right at the bottom of this page, thefe is and ad for "Discount enema supplies' ! LOL! Unbelievable! Please take advantage of it and be happy! LOL!!!!!!
