PARIS (AP) -- Russian women are having a much tougher time finding success in Grand Slam events this year.

After Russians won three of the four women's majors in 2004, none have reached a major final. Maria Sharapova (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/403/) made it to the Australian Open semifinals in January, and Nadia Petrova (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/196/) and Elena Likhovtseva (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/108/) both lost in the French Open semis Thursday, winning just seven games between them.

Petrova's quest for her first tournament title ended in a 6-2, 6-3 loss to three-time Grand Slam champion Justine Henin-Hardenne (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/319/), and Likhovtseva endured a drubbing in her first major semifinal, losing 6-1, 6-1 to Mary Pierce (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/160/).

Petrova hung around for 68 minutes, while Likhovtseva lasted just 58 against Pierce.

``All the Russian players love to compete,'' Likhovtseva said. ``But I was really struggling to get back to my game.''

Last season, only Henin-Hardenne's title at the Australian Open prevented a Russian sweep of majors: Anastasia Myskina (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/101/) at Roland Garros, Sharapova at Wimbledon, and Svetlana Kuznetsova (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/151/) at the U.S. Open.

However, all is not lost for Russia -- Nikolay Davydenko (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/266/) still has a shot. He plays Argentine Mariano Puerta (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/395/) in Friday's men's semifinals at Roland Garros.

Russian Marat Safin (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/37/) won the Australian Open this year.

Martina Navratilova (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/214/) is within reach of another Grand Slam trophy.

The 48-year-old Navratilova and Leander Paes (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/300/) of India advanced to the French Open mixed doubles final, after beating Australian pair Samantha Stosur (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/378/) and Paul Hanley (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/329/) 6-2, 6-3 on Thursday.

The No. 6-seeded Navratilova and Paes won the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2003.

In the finals, they will face Daniela Hantuchova (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/99/) of Slovakia and Fabrice Santoro (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/24/) of France, who beat No. 4-seeded Anastasia Myskina of Russia and Jonas Bjorkman (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/121/) of Sweden.

Navratilova has 18 Grand Slam singles titles, 31 in doubles, and nine in mixed doubles.

Lindsay Davenport (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/93/) came up short at the French Open, but she's still No. 1.

When the new WTA rankings come out Monday, Davenport will retain the top slot despite her loss in the quarterfinals at the French Open, the only Grand Slam she hasn't won.

No. 2 Maria Sharapova needed to reach the final to overtake Davenport. She lost in the quarters to Justine Henin-Hardenne.

Henin-Hardenne, who won her semifinal Thursday against Nadia Petrova, will jump five slots to No. 7 regardless of how she fares in the final against Mary Pierce. Petrova moves up one spot to No. 8.

Pierce, who beat Elena Likhovtseva in the semifinals, moves from No. 23 to No. 11 if she wins the final, and No. 13 if she's the runner-up. Pierce will crack the top 20 for the first time since June 2001. Likhovtseva, who reached her first Grand Slam semis, moves to No. 15, up from 19th.
