That is true, especially with names. Like with that creepy Le Pen guy, they say that "n", as if it were "Le Penne". And Halard-Decugis, they pronounce the final "s". Very confusing for us foreigners!

BUT -- using François for Françoise, that's a very, very elementary mistake, and someone should have caught it before airing the segment.

There was a jockey named Frankie Durr. Maybe that's who they mean.

Apparently Andy is correct. Chris Evert says so in this excerpt from her book Chrissie: My Own Story (and Chris ought to know):

http://tennis.quickfound.net/history/chris_evert_index.html

"...Françiose Durr made everyone laugh. "Frankie," as everyone called her, was easily the best French player in several decades, and her personality was as colorful as the crazy, unorthodox backhand that she hit with her right arm out in front of her body like a board. Frankie continually talked to herself on the court; the fact that you couldn't tell whether it was English, French or a combination made her comments more amusing.
* * ...On some occasions, Frankie even had her terrier dog, Topspin, carry her racquets onto the court..."

Wish we had players like that now, having their dogs do some work out there instead of always mooching. ;)
