really depending on Justine her fitness... she obviously has lower back trouble. Her serve isn't great, but if she can move Mary around, she has a good shot of winning the title.

BUT, Mary seems focused and in a state of bliss on court. She plays like she has nothing to lose, which is the case. A lot of people won't believe in Mary actually winning. The crowd is in her favor, plus she knows how to play them. I give a slight edge to Mary for the fact that I think she can do more with the ball then Petrova... then again, Justine blew away Sharapova...

Who knows!

It will be a huge mismatch. The way Pierce played today, she will be lucky to get 4 games of The Cheetah..

It should have been Dementieva-Kuznetsova final.. What a wasted opportunity for the two..

Come on, don't forget it will be a final ;)

Honestly, I don't see Mary winning more than 4 games in each set, and that is only if Justine has some problems getting into the match. I've seen Pierce play, well yeah if you give her the ball in her racquet she will crush you, but Justine's variety and power will be too much to handle for Mary!

i am a big fan of kuzzie (and to a slight lesser degree of elena d.too..),BUT
it would be pretty unfair to say,the WRONG ones are in the final!!they both had their chance, but just did not take it(for whatever the reason!!)!and the ones that are still left fully deserve, where they are!i know they are from your country, but fairness comes first... :)

The thing you have to remember is that tennis is ALL about match ups.

Yes, Mary as far as I can see has played better tennis over the two weeks than Justine who has been, well, lacklustre.

That means jack shit.

Justine has the perfect game to dismantle Mary.

Justine will do just what Hingis used to do to Mary. She will neutralise Mary's power by taking the ball early and moving it around and exploit her movement, which though impressive this week is still her weakness.

If Mary serves well as she has all tournament then the scoreline should be respectable, but I don't see how Juju can lose this.

This is true about Hingis, but Hingis tried this at the 2000 FO and Mary almost put her away in 2 easy sets before she choked the second away...And yes, Pierce is moving a million times better than I have ever seen from her but JHH will more than likely be too much she can handle...

i realize mary will have to step it up to BEAT justine...
but mary had 67% first serves, only 1 double fault, only 11 errors, 26 winners, converted 5/7 break point opportunities, won 9/10 points at net, won 57% of her receiving points, and smacked a 186 kph serve.

Pierce beat Conchi in the 2000 final. Similar style of opponent. Henin-Hardenne's slice won't trouble Pierce the way it did Petrova and Sharapova. Tough to pick against Henin-Hardenne on this surface, but Pierce will have the crowd. And if Henin-Hardenne complains enough, she'll have the crowd against her.

I'm going against reason, judgement and tennis acumen, and picking Pierce in three.

Didn't you see? She played against an opponent who simply could not move at all, who was petrified.. All those dropshots, Henin will eat them for breakfast.. All those serves, Henin won't return them within the service line, Like Lena did. Henin plays very deep. Lena normally does too. She was paralized with fear today. Could not react at all. Could not anticiapte at all.. It was the first big match of her career. The way Pierce played today, she would struggle to win points, not games, against Henin.

Yes, RG00 was one match against a very error prone Hingis. Hingis won something like 10 of her last 13 matches against Pierce so she knew how to take her apart. That's why I always found it funny when people said Hingis played poor opposition to win her GS titles. In all of her Australian Opens she beat a very in form Pierce on her favourite surface. Mary probably would have won all the Aus Opens from 97-99 if she could have gotten past Hingis. But Hingis knew how to beat her perfectly. And what do you know here we have Pierce, 6,7,8 years later getting to finals against the new generation who are supposed to be so much better than the nineties players. It makes me laugh

The big difference between Conchita and Justine is that Justine plays on or inside the baseline, while Conchita plays/ed several feet behind it. This is a crucial difference against Pierce.

Gotta go with what my heart says and wants--- Pierce to win!!!

JHH is the favorite here, but Mary has been in a zone this whole tourney and very relaxed on court--- if she is hitting 1st strike winners in the final, she very well could be our 2005 FO Champion!!!

Comparing playing style of Henin and Martinez is really silly.. As if having the single-hander is enough to make their styles similar.

Justine will probably edge it but only if she is aggressive - if she allows Mary to get in the first strike she will be in deep trouble.

If Mary gets off to a fast start the French crowd may prove to be the equaliser - in this scenario the match could go either way.

That said...if Justine plays well she wins.

I fail to see how it's foolish. The point of the sentence was to illustrate how foolish the conclusion is that the game is so much better today than it was in the mid nineties.

Mary's achievements are testimony to that.

A slam finalist in 1994, a winner in 1995, a finalist again in 1997, a winner in 2000 and a finalist (and possibly, anything can happen, a winner) in 2005.

I fail to see what Pierce's injuries have to do with that point I was making. If anything it adds to me point that - despite age and injuries taking there toll - Pierce, an elite player of the nineties, is still producing elite level tennis today.

You're entitled to that opinion. But I really don't think it's grounded in fact. Most of those players are retired now, but many of their less illustrious contemporaries are still holding the rankings that they were holding back in the nineties, some even higher.

As for Conchita, the only one on that list still playing, not being a trouble for top players. Well last time I looked she beat Myskina this year, and has pushed Kuznetsova and Henin Hardenne to three tight sets. This is a really over the hill Conchita against 3 of the last 5 GS winners :tape:

This is a crucial difference against Pierce. It's a difference. I'm not at all sure it's crucial. Henin-Hardenne.2005 being waaaaay faster than Conchi.2000 is, I think, more critical an issue. Don't forget Mary beat Hingis six times, including their last ever match, at Roland Garros!! She had a very respectable 6-10 H2H against Martina who, in my opinion, was WAY better than Henin is now.

The head to head is respectable because she beat Hingis a few times when Hingis was 15.

From 1997 onwards Hingis completely dominated Mary. As I said she was 10-3 (winning 7 straight) in their last 13 matches, and she won all of those matches in straight sets.

I actually think that Martina was better than Justine as well, she was certainly more consistent, but Justine has the same weapons that Marti had that drove Mary nuts; the ability to take the ball early and mix it up, great anticipation and great wheels.

Justine is a heavy favorite going into this final. She has got so much more variety to her game than Mary does and will move Mary around to expose her weakness. It is all in Justine's hands.

It's a difference. I'm not at all sure it's crucial. Henin-Hardenne.2005 being waaaaay faster than Conchi.2000 is, I think, more critical an issue. Pierce is gonna have to hit a lot more shots.

I think you are underestimating the court positioning factor. Mary has a good record against players like Coetzer and ASV, just as she has against Martinez, who are just as fast as Justine but player further back. Because Justine, like Hingis, stands on the baseline and takes the ball pretty early, Mary isn't in as good a position to the boss the rallies as with a typical retriever.

I can't believe how many people think Mary will win... guess a lot of people vote with their heart instead of their head around here...

I still think JHH is the heavy favorite going into this match but JHH hits 3x as many ue's than Hingis...I think there game are very dissimilar.

I'm pretty sure it will be Justine, but wouldn't it be great if it were Mary? Haha, everyone's saying that: "I think this but I want that".

Justine has defeated Pierce easily in straight sets the three previous times they played (on clay, grass and hard)

This is a different Mary than the one that Justine beat so easily. I expect Henin to win but I don't think it will be easy. If a set gets close, Mary could break through. But I wouldnt underestimate Justine. I think it will be a competitive match throught but I have to go with Justine. I would like Mary to win it, though.

All reason points to Henin, but Mary's got that "5 year plan" working for her...

...she also is playing seriously carefree tennis and if she can keep that attitude and hit those winners (the way Petrova couldn't)...

...Then once again, there will be "Something About Mary" :yeah:

If Mary plays like she did today against Likhovtseva, she will take the title. The crowd is a BIG factor too.

I say, Mary in 3 sets.

Good luck Mary!:wavey:

Likhovtseva have no weapon, her shots have no power and Mary had all the time to do whatever she wanted with the ball.

I REALLY want Ma'am to win. And if she does it will be 3/6 7/5 6/4 or similar.
However i think Henin will win 6/1 6/2 in 65 minutes or something.
But who knows! I hope they show it here in japan but if they don't I'll be cheering Ma'am on the RG site.
Go ma'am!!!!!:)

My heart says Mary but my brain says Justine. So, I don't know...

That's how I feel too :) My brain tells me that Justine is a much better player at the moment & will come out expecting to win. That she will move Pierce around & keep her on the defensive.

My heart says that Mary has some more magic left in her. She won't be nervous like Nadia & Kuznetsova, she SHOULD have the crowds support,(I still don't know who the crowd will pick b/c they love Justine) & she's just been playing great all week, while Justine has been streaky. (Poor against Kuznetsova, Excellent against Sharapova, & then 'ok' against Nadia. Since I suppose her last match was an up match which means she is due for a down match....

I think Pierce can & might win...but she'll need some help from Justine.

Likhovtseva have no weapon, her shots have no power and Mary had all the time to do whatever she wanted with the ball.
...and yet she was in semi-final.
So why not Mary winning the whole thing? I don't see that more unrealistic than Likhovtesva in semi-final, uh ?

It will be a huge mismatch. The way Pierce played today, she will be lucky to get 4 games of The Cheetah..

All those dropshots, Henin will eat them for breakfast.. All those serves, Henin won't return them within the service line, Like Lena did. Henin plays very deep. The way Pierce played today, she would struggle to win points, not games, against Henin.

Only delusional people could think otherwise.. An elite player against a long time has-been, moving like a behemoth.

that was well said... especially the deep shots of Henin proved to be right.. Henin hitting close to the baseline, making it Mary very hard to step in and hit winners.
