Yep! Go Lindsay!

I'm looking forward to this because my gut tells me Lindsay is on the verge of winning one more slam and I'm hoping that it'll be this one!

Hopefully, those who're going 9including myself) can attract the TV camera's and make ourselves known to the world. Tower of Power are here to stay - and so is Lindsay! :D

beckl,

create a free image host account here: http://www.afreeimagehost.com/index.php

And once you've uploaded you images to the host, you can copy and paste the tag code for the particular image you want to post. The website is quite clear and should be easy to pic up even if you never posted a pic before.

I guess I'll be the first to discuss the actual draw possibilities.

1r vs. random crap.
2r vs. random crap.
3r vs. 25-32 seed. Probably Asagoe-Bartoli. Bartoli as a seed, I know lolz. Only two seeds that can pose a problem here. Asagoe if she's hot can be annoying on grass. It's her best surface, and she plays well in slams. Other one is Sprem. But K-Lina is really, really bad now. And will be ranked alot lower after Wimbly. Still, if she has one of her few hot days a year, that could be trouble.
4r vs. Pierce, Bovina, Likhovtseva or V. Williams, maybe Clijsters. I say maybe Clijsters because someone will probably withdraw above her. Pierce is end on grass. Lindsay would hit winners on her everywhere, and there's no way in hell Mary plays as well as she did in Paris again. That was one of her two good tournaments a year. Bovina is also ugly on grass. She can't move on it at all. That would be a straight set victory. Likhovtseva is grossly overranked now. So, whatever with her. Then there's Vee!. Vee! is playing like crap, and is just awful to watch now. But, Lindsay still makes things really annoying against Vee!, sadly. I think Lindsay wins that, but she'll be dumb and probably make it much hard than it needs to be. Kim, whatever. If Lindsay draws her again, I'll just ignore the week. She'll still be scared of Kim. "Oh. Kim too good. I'm lefts now." But, it is grass. So, meh.
QF vs. Kuznetsova, Dementieva, Henin-Hardenne, Petrova or Alicia. I put in Alicia because I think she'll probably beat any of those #5-8's except for Henin. And probably some random crap will beat Alyona. Kuznetsova would be nice. She's teh shit right now and her confidence is probably down to zero. Dementieva won't get there, and if she does, she'll suck in the QF. Justine, sigh. If Lindsay draws her, I could really see a huge tank right there. Though on grass I hope Lindsay realizes that she can just flat out overpower her. Oh well. Petrova is stupid, and doesn't match up well against Lindsay. Lunch. Molik is meh. Hasn't played in forever, and Lindsay was playing hideously in Australia and still managed to beat Molik at her best.
SF vs. Mauresmo or Serena. Mauresmo, we win. Even if we're down 0-6 0-5. Chokes, losts, ends for Amelie. Serena is out of shape, but Lindsay can probably manage to be dumb and lose that. It's very winnable though. Very winnable.
F vs. Sharapova. Yep. 6-0 6-0. Thankums.

Worst possible draw:
1r vs. Shuai Peng
2r vs. Sesil Karatantcheva
3r vs. Shinobu Asagoe
4r vs. Kimberly F. Clijsters.
QF vs. Justine Henin-Hardenne
SF vs. Serena Willaims
F vs. Sharapova

Best possible draw:
1r vs. (WC) Navratilova
2r vs. (WC) Dokic
3r vs. Marion Bartoli
4r vs. Elena Likhovtseva
QF vs. Elena Dementieva
SF vs. Amelie Mauresmo
F vs. Maria Sharapova

The second draw would be fun.

RayRob
Jun 6th, 2005, 07:16 PM
 Love the idea for the second draw, sadly it's never that easy...especially when Lindsay generally gets rubbish draws.....but we'll all hope for the best!

Even if Lindsay had a tricky draw as you outline, I still have confidence that she can bring her A-game to the grass. She has learned to love it since 1999 so I am really looking forward to Lindsay doing a bit of damage ;)

Go Lindsay!

Best possible draw:
1r vs. (WC) Navratilova
2r vs. (WC) Dokic
3r vs. qualifier
4r vs. qualifier
QF vs. qualifier
SF vs. qualifier
F vs. qualifier

;) You heard it here first!

Lindsay beat Sprem at Sprem's best last year, so, no problems there. Lindsay, on grass, won't have any problems until the QF. Serena is out of shape, Venus is bad now, Kim she just beat and grass is a good surface and yet Lindsay doesn't seem to have a great deal of confidence although the wins of these three in the past 12 months must have done a lot of good, but she still doubts herself. Justine on grass is beatable, but Lindsay would be the under dog. The best possible draw would be for Serena or Maria to take out Justine whilst Lindsay faces Momo in the semis and Sharapova in the final. We have to believe Lindsay wants this slam more than anything and will fight as hard as she can for it... she has to!

Hopefully Lindsay will bring her serve with her :D

Jun 7th, 2005, 03:21 AM
First time I saw Lindsay was here at Wimbledon in the second against Panova. Woo ... Good memories. :)

I can't wait for this tournament. And I hope her confidence is up now, but somehow, I doubt it. After beating a forehand-less Kim and then getting beaten by Mary well, seems to cancel out the first part. When Lindsay beat Venus, she wasn't playing crap like she was against Kim, and I think that's were all her confidence came from. Then again, Venus had no forehand either. Oh well, just hope Lindsay digs deep and wins.

Allez Lindsay.

Andrew.
Jun 7th, 2005, 07:10 PM
When Lindsay beat Venus, she wasn't playing crap like she was against Kim, and I think that's were all her confidence came from.
No. Lindsay only played well against Venus in one of her last four wins against her - at the US Open. Amelie Island was hideous...Venus just sucks hard now. And Stanford was really just not a pretty match. Lindsay mentally was hanging in there, which is why she won. She made more errors than winners, and Venus had about 60 UE's off the FH that day. They were good wins because of who she beat - a player she had a mental block on for years - not how she did it.

Elldee
Jun 7th, 2005, 07:13 PM
Ahhh... the US Open was amazing tennis.

Ty-Ty
Jun 8th, 2005, 12:03 AM
I was just talking about Stanford, and yes, I guess that can argubaly be classsified as a "Not pretty" match, but I would say she played better in that one that she did against Kim. I would've thought that the win over Kim (Which was similar to her constant losses to Venus) might have put Lindsay in same prediciment as it did when she beat Venus (At Stanford), but that's not how it showed in Lindsay's match against Pierce ... But you also must add the other factors, red clay, Lindsay not played nearly her best, and Pierce playing pretty well ...

Sorry if I'm making no sense. I'm tired.

Ty-Ty
Jun 8th, 2005, 12:08 AM
OK, I should've have put,

"When Lindsay beat Venus, she wasn't playing AS crap like she was against Kim, and I think that's were all her confidence came from."

Cut me some slack ... I just got whopped by a kid seven years younger than me, and he hasn't even turn nine yet. :o

LindsayRocks89
Jun 8th, 2005, 03:54 AM
i really think the only 4 people Lindsay can lose to are Justine, Kim, Maria, and Serena. now even i admit Serena is out of shape and i doubt she's been practicing much but like Andrew said LIndsay could still lose that one just because she seems to do that against Serena, against Maria i do think she would win now since she had that great win against her and has figured Maria out, the only way i see Lindsay losing to Maria is if Maria is just on fire like she was for most of last wimbledon. Kim, well its kim, i doubt beating Kim has gave Lindsay alot of confidence if she was to play Kim again, but hey i still believe she could do it, and then i think the biggest problem would be enna, i wouldn't feel as confident if she faces Justine.

LindsayRocks89
Jun 8th, 2005, 03:56 AM
oh duh. . . i'm really hoping Lindsay does awesome here, and wins the title, because i just know that Lindsay wants another grandslam so bad. and i don't think she will retire until she gets one. :bounce:

Andrew.
Jun 8th, 2005, 11:58 AM
Ugh why is she playing doubles.

I guess she wants to drop dead in the later rounds, again.

I hope she pulls a tank like she did in Dubai. That was classic.

Elldee
Jun 8th, 2005, 12:02 PM
I'm coming round to your way of thinking on doubles. Wimbledon really is a great chance to win, she hopefully will be playing her best tennis, she believes in herself and she really should be totally focused on singles and not be worn down by doubles. Although she did well in Melbourne she wasn't playing that well [AT ALL!] and IMO, the surface was a little bit too slow for her Lindsay to play at her best.. I hope this opportunity isn't wasted. I really believe in her.

I'm okay with her playing mixed... is it a smaller draw or does it just seem to be? To be honest, the only reason her an Corina got to the finals in AO was because the draw really opened up for them., it surely won't happen again.

Ty-Ty
Jun 8th, 2005, 06:43 PM
Is she played mixed as well?

If she does, no Bob again, please. Pick Rafa ... :) Boy, would that be a lopsided team. I would pay to see them play together ...

She certainly won't play both, so it'll probably just be women's.

Anyway, I got really angry this morning when I was being a bit of an insomniac. It's sucks so much that people keeping giving Lindsay crap for being world number one with no slam and she should have won the US fucking Open! Kuznetsova was being destroyed... it's so fucking annoying!

Well, with idiots with comments like that I thank goodness that there is sepourate player forums! I sometimes venture into GM's because there is some funny stuff, but more often than not there are just plain pillocks trying to stir trouble....particularlly about Lindsay. You never know, what if Maria doesn't win Wimby but gets to #1 anyway, that would mean she becomes #1 without a slam during the last year and will people be saying the same again?! I think not - double standards! idiots!?

Apparently Bovina's pulled out of Wimbledon and Dementieva is a question mark so that seeds Kim right in the fourth round group for the top four seeds along with Venus. Finger crossed! [mainly not for Kim].

Just seen on Wimbledon website that the draw takes place tomorrow at 10.30am....anyone know if it will be braodcast on radio...whether online or normal FM? Don't know if Wimbledon Radio will do it again.

Lindsay's been unlucky with draws so many times that it is time the Murphey's Law gave her a good draw. Perhaps a half of the draw with Mauresmo, Zvonareva and venus in....that would be great :D

Playing half-assed tennis, I still think Serena is the favorite for the title.

Venus would be fine.

Elldee
Jun 15th, 2005, 02:57 PM
I think Justine is the favourite. Serena's game hasn't progressed much since this time last year, IMO, she's been out for ages and that should help Lindsay. In my mind Lindsay and Justine are the favourites and I'm hoping we don't have an all Belgian final.

I'd quite like this draw: Razzano, Dechy, Petrova, Mauresmo [although I don't think Serena is the end of the world as long as there's no pesky belgian] and then Sharapova would be nice and beatable :D

Andrew..

I believe Lindsay has a good draw. I mean, if she gets past Kim in the fourth round (which I firmly believe she can do, given that it's grass) the draw is pretty much open. Come to think about it, I'd rather be in the top half than the lower half :scared:

Jun 16th, 2005, 01:07 PM
goddamn can't Lindsay get a good draw for once (like mauresmo)!? Oh well, Lindsay knows she just beat Kim on her worst surface, so she should have the mental edge, and if she can get her serve together, she can serve Kim off the court. I believe the last time they played on grass, Lindsay won 6-2, 6-2 (even if that was a few years ago) lol But if/when she gets through Kim, then she should have a nice run to the final and win the whole shabang! GO LINDSAY ;)

LindsayRocks89
Jun 16th, 2005, 01:09 PM
even though she beat Kim at Roland Garros, it doesn't convince me she can beat Kim again, i mean i'm sure she still will have serious mental issues against her when and if they play, but i do have faith she can do it, and after that she would have an easier draw to the finals.

Andrew..
Jun 16th, 2005, 01:47 PM
Fuck. With the exception of Kim, that's an absolutely amazing draw. I really think she's going to lose to Kim though ugh... I think she thinks that her win at RG was a fluke, and I doubt she has any confidece from it. Ugh...

Andrew..
Jun 16th, 2005, 01:52 PM
On the other hand, Lindsay absolutely CAN overpower Kim on grass. Probably the only surface she can do so now. No matter how fast Kim is, Lindsay just hits the ball huge on a grass court. As long as she keeps her errors to a minimum, she should win...

Fuck. I'm being positive. That means she'll lose.

Frederic
Jun 16th, 2005, 05:41 PM
lol!!! Stop being pessimistic!! I agree with you Andrew when you say that the win at Rg was a fluke, and Lindsay won't get confidence from that. However, Lindsay is an excellent player on grass, and she acknowledges she has worked very hard on grass to be competitive and to have chances to win. Anyway, we can't do anything, just wait and see how Lindsay will play... GO LINDSAY and kick ass!!!!!

She doesn't need to play the best tournament of her life.

If she keeps her errors count below her winners, she beats Kim, end of story. And the draw after that to the final is decent.

I just know she's probably going to fuck up against Kim though, sigh. Make 40 UE's, can't serve. End.

Freak ... Kim is everywhere.

What a kick ass draw, other than Kim of course ...

Anyway, on Lindsay's first round match, she plays Alina Jidkova who has never won a round a Wimbledon ... Had an extremely crappy year so far and from what it looks like, hasn't had any decent results on grass ... But anyway, the thing that I found odd was that in her bio, her most memorable tennis experince was playing non other than Lindsay Davenport at the Australian Open ...@_@ Does anyone else find that odd? I mean, I've looked through this book a million times and I rarely see any part of someone's bio where they're most memborable tennis experince was playing anyone ... and getting trounced by them 0 and 1 ... I just find it a bit odd. But then again, she never has really gotten to play the big names due to her inconsistency. Still ... A bit werid. T_T

Hopefully she doesn't idolize her or something and then goes out and play the tennis of her life.

Elldee
Jun 17th, 2005, 07:37 AM
Lindsay needed her serve in Tokyo, it came, she needed it in the AO final and she could manufacture it at the start.

Lindsay has to go in positive. It's her second to last chance for a slam and probably her best chance if she gets past Kim. Kim has only ever beaten Lindsay on hard whilst Lindsay's won on grass, clay, carpet and hard... hopefully that trend'll continue.

Andrew..
Jun 17th, 2005, 01:45 PM
Grar Kim beat Kuznetsova in 3 sets. I would feel better if Kim had a crap loss like that before Wimbly.

But this proves my point again. Kim has a hard time with the big babes on grass. If Lindsay serves well and keeps her errors down, she wins. Easier said than done.

Hopefully Kim will come in tired now.

Yep. Kuznetsova has sucked hard as of late. If Kim is struggling like this against Kuznetsova, Lindsay should win. But that means nothing, because I still think Lindsay doesn't have the confidence against Kim.

The #1-4 seeds meet the #13-16 seeds in the 4r of a slam. With Kim's ranking now near the top 12, Lindsay can't draw her in the Round of 16 at the US Open.

Andrew..
Jun 19th, 2005, 06:56 PM
Tomorrow, second match on Center Court. Lindsay plays Alina Jidkova. She's only played her once, at the Australian Open in 2000, and she won 6-0 6-1. Granted, Alina was just a baby back then, but it was on Alina's best surface.

Alina doesn't like grass, and she's been playing hideous tennis lately. Serve well, and slam, bam, wham. 6-1 6-1.

Tomorrow will be a good indicator of where Lindsay is. First match on grass. If she serves well, I'll be more confident about her chances. 70% first serves in, winning 75% would be good. The serve is what will make or break this tournament.

Why does ESPN hate tennis so?

Seems like they've spread coverage everywhere (Which I don't get half of ...) and then show it for like five minutes before going to a different station. Why can't we just leave it on one, poor person, no cable station. Like PBS or something. No one watches that ... @_@

I'll never get to see Lindsay. Stupid ESPN. :(

L. Davenport - Day 1
Monday, June 20, 2005

Q. Was that as comfortable as you could have expected? Were you happy?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Yeah, not having played a match on grass and coming in here at Wimbledon and Centre Court, you always want to start off really well.

You know, I played great. I'm really happy with the way I played. Hard to read too much into it either way. But I served well, hit some ‑‑ hit the ball cleanly and was able to get out of there pretty quickly.

Q. Are you happy with the shape you're in?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Yeah. I feel like I'm feeling pretty strong. You know, on grass it's most important to hopefully not get injured and, second, try and get off the rally to a good start, whether serving well or returning well. I've been concentrating on those things and I'm just going to keep trying to do those well.

Q. Quite a turnaround for you from the last time you were here. What do you think is behind that?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I don't know. After I left here, I seemed to get on a great roll last summer. I've had a wonderful ride the last 12 months since leaving here. Never would have expected exactly how things turned out. I would never have dreamt that.

I'm still out here because I'm enjoying it. I feel like I'm playing well enough. You know, obviously the ultimate goal is always to try to win another Slam. I've been really close and haven't quite gotten through. But I still feel like I'm knocking on the door of having that happen.

Hard to walk away when you feel like you could achieve the ultimate goal in tennis. While I still feel like I have that ability, I'm going to stick around.

Q. Obviously the last two years you've made it a point, certainly in the last year, of talking about not being back. Just how shocked are you at being here?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Well, I would be ‑‑ I'm extremely shocked if I went back 12 months ago to this time. If you asked me about four or six months ago, not as shocked. Really once the summer was over and went through the fall, you know, I definitely made a commitment at the end of last year that I was going to play again through this year. I've known for a while I would probably be back.

But at the time I was sitting here a year ago, I just felt like I was losing that little inner fire that you need to always be at the top. And I didn't want to see my ranking just start kind of going down and start retiring at like ranked 15 or 20, for reasons like that. I really take a lot of pride in being successful and doing well.

After I left here, it got relit. You know, I don't know how else to describe it. Came back and started playing really well again.

Q. Is it chicken or the egg? Did the fire come back or did you start playing well?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: It probably centers more around the tennis, for sure. Success obviously makes you enjoy anything more. But I started to feel I played at a level that I could contend and, like I said, have that chance to win the ultimate prize. When you've done that and then you feel ‑‑ I felt like I was playing the two years prior, after coming back from the two surgeries, just to play. I didn't really feel I could win for a couple years.

Then all of a sudden starting last summer, I felt like I could. It's the big difference in your mental game when you feel like you can still do that.

Q. Do you think it all came down to that one match at Stanford, beating Venus in the final, or is that too simplistic?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Probably too simplistic. But, you know, it definitely helped all of a sudden winning all those tournaments in California and starting off on the right foot in the first one. But that match definitely kind of catapulted me with the confidence to kind of get through the rest of the summer.

But I think as things started rolling, I think it was a combination of a bunch of stuff. But winning that first tournament right after Wimbledon definitely helped.

Q. Considering how close you were to going, you must look at all this as a gift, right?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Yeah, it's been great. I was so excited to walk back here a few days ago. I love playing here, I always have. You know, even to be seeded 1 and get to play on Centre Court the first day is great. It's pretty exciting even after I've played countless matches out there. I've had a wonderful time here the last few days, really a lot of fun. I hope it keeps going.

Q. Does that playing without pressure help you?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Yeah, I mean, there's always pressure that you put on yourself, regardless of outside forces. But while enjoying it and while excited to be back, I mean, there's still business to be done. I want to do well, so there's still some pressure there.

Q. When you play a match like you did today, are very dominant, what does it tell you about the state of your game? Do you learn information? Do you have a better read on where you stand after that?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: You know, I don't try to read too much into particular matches. I try to focus on each surface, what I need to do well to be successful on that surface. So if I look back today, I'd say, "Okay. I was aggressive with my shots and I served well. That's important on grass, so that's great." But I know more than anybody that in 48 hours the exact opposite can happen in this freaky sport.

I just try and keep sharp on those kind of things. I could go out the next day and play great or not play so well, and you're still in the tournament regardless. So you kind of have to learn to be immune to either thinking you're playing so well or not playing so well.

Q. The feeling you have right now, because of being No. 1, the roll you're on, being here where you're having so much fun, how does it compare with anything you've experienced in your career, or does it not compare with anything?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Yeah, that's interesting. Probably doesn't really compare because, I mean, like I said, I knew the last few months I'd be coming back here. When you actually walk back through, and I remember last year crying a little bit when I left thinking, "Oh I might not be playing here again." In that regard, it's pretty fun to be back here and be playing well, being seeded 1, and all of that. It's pretty special.

I would think it's kind of a different feeling. I feel like kind of on a little bit of borrowed time because I didn't think it would necessarily happen again.

Q. When you left here, did you make your own private farewells to Wimbledon in your head?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: No, no, no.

Q. You didn't say, "I won't be coming back"?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: No. I just lost the mixed semis and was upset (laughter). Just kidding.

No, no, it wasn't like that. It was just like, you know, take a deep breath and be like, "Well, I wonder if this is it. Could be."

Q. When you came back this year for the first time, you think of last year, crying a little bit, or did you think of when you won here?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: You know, I walked back here with Corina. We were just kind of joking around . I'm like, "We're back." She was kinds of laughing, too. It didn't get so philosophical as that. I mean, '99 seems like an eternity ago. It's hard to conjure up any really clear memories of that time. Maybe if I saw like a highlight on TV, but it's so far removed. So, no, I guess it wouldn't have been that memory.

I think just coming back and seeing how beautiful it is, especially before the tournament starts like on the Wednesday or Thursday before, seeing the calmness of Wimbledon in the week before, that's kind of like the greatest time to be here.

Q. Hasn't been done by the men in quite a long time, it has obviously more recently among the women, that's winning the French Open and Wimbledon back to back. Not something you've had a chance to do. Can you talk about how tough that is?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: It's like one of the hardest things I think that people expect in sports. I mean, to switch the most extreme surfaces in the small amount of time we have ‑‑ I mean, I know the latest I've gone in the French is the semis, but the finals of doubles which is still Sunday, it's not easy. I've never kind of understood the timing of the two Slams and the extreme opposites of the surfaces.

It takes a lot physically. I mean, after you win a Grand Slam, I mean, mentally it's a pretty excited first few weeks afterwards. Then to get right back, geared up for another Slam, it's pretty tough. We'll see. I don't know how Borg did it, but we'll see who can kind of repeat that. It's going to be tough.

Q. Word about your next‑round opponent.

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I'm pretty sure I play Jackson. Yeah, she's a good young player. It's nice to see some Americans kind of do well. I know she came through the qualifying. Obviously she's been playing well on grass. I watched a little of her play today on like the monitor.

But, I mean, I don't know tons about her. Anyone who's kind of fought their way through Roehampton and through the first round must be playing well. For me, like I said, serving well, going after shots and being aggressive is the most important thing. I'll worry about that.

Q. What does that say about the challenge for Justine Henin‑Hardenne, if she is able to do well here, what does it say about her?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: She's remarkable in that regard. She's come back from some situations that have been pretty dire, like the US Open. Great fighter. I mean, if anyone can do it, she definitely it seems has the capacity to do it.

You know, I think she is by far the best clay courter in women's tennis. I mean, she obviously proved that this whole clay court season. We'll see on the grass. I think it gives the bigger hitters a little bit more of an advantage than on the clay court against her. I know she's in kind of a tough section with both Williams, who are obviously great grass courters. It will be interesting to see. I really don't know because I haven't actually seen her play on grass all that much.

We'll see how she does these next two weeks.

Q. Does it bother you at all that you're No. 1 and people don't talk about you as much as they talk about people who are below you?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: No.

Q. Doesn't bother you at all?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Huh‑uh.

Q. Do you like it that way?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I don't mind it, no.

Q. I think it's the first time for two years that the top five women have been either all in the same place at a Grand Slam because you're all fit and healthy. Does this make Wimbledon a particularly hard test?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I think not only is it the top five rank, but it's been the top five players for the last few years. Kim and Venus, even though they're not ranked in the top five, we're on our way back to having all the really great players playing at the same time and that's really what we've been lacking the last few years.

It would be great if we could get everybody playing healthy and playing their best and then seeing what happens. It's going to be, like the French, one of the toughest Slams we've had in a couple of years for that reason.

Yes the three people in Lindsay's box were Adam, Lindsay's mother, Anne, and Lindsay's trainer.

Lindsay has been in great shape the last few years but especially now, you can see the muscle tone, she looks soooo fit, which tells me one thing: she'll be playing for a little while longer, probably next year. I doubt she would work so hard off-court just to play out a few months. And if she plays like she did yesterday, then Lindsay will be around for quite some time :)

LOL @ Lindsayno1.....that sun really did get to you! Yep, we had fun...although I can't say my journey to and from wimby was fun - but that's another story of sorts! :o Very eventful. Cancelled and delayed trains, physical violence on my carriage.....people being escorted off trains, no air con in the carriage.....me puking my guts out - not that you wanted to know that, just thought I'd lower the tone a bit ;)

there weren't many people Becky missed of her list of people we saw....Xavier Mallise was another player....did she say federer and roddick and hewitt? cos we saw them too.

I just checked tomorrows order of play and Wimby have the ordacity of putting world number 1, Lindsay Davenport last on court 2 tomorrow! Why on earth have they put her there - couldn't they have done that on monday instead so we could have seen her!? Dumb asses, why should sveta and kim get priority!? gits!? I have to go work, and if the day on C2 pans out like today, Lindsay won't be playing until about 5/6pm and I will be at work by then! GRRR

Might have to sneak a peek at scores on my supervisors PC when she's not looking ;) although it might be very difficult! I'll give her the sob story tomorrow about how we couldn't see her play on monday  and maybe she will take pitty!

And yes, the highlight of our day at wimby was getting approval of our T-shirts from Lindsay's trainer - how fab!

Looks like I will have to wait until round 3 before I see some Lindsay action!

PS....forgot to mention Lindsay's impressive win, even though we only saw the last few games on a little TV inside Centre Court! She was on fire....almost 70% 1st serve in was it!? Fantastic, couldn't ask for a better start to the event!

I was watching some of the "big name matches" today and I have to say they all looked less then convincing! i was rooting for Eleni Daniilidou in that match vs JHH, she was really great! Serena struggled big time against Angela Haynes (who I'm very impressed with as it's the first time I've seen her) she could have won that match....but Serena pulled through. Even Sharapova didn't look all that great either, in fact out of the top players Lindsay has been the most convincing of the lot!

hopefully, things will go as plan and like '99 she won't drop a set ;) She does look good and trim.....and physically strong.

When me and Becky checked out the stats for the match at Wimby, I noticed that her fastest 1st serve was 117mph and slowest was 95mph. Lindsay has been consistantly hitting these types of serves. thinking back to wimby '99, I remember going into the final her fastest serve was mearly 105mph and slowest 85mph....averaging about 95mph over all. So, even after 6 years Lindsay's serve seems to have got more kick in it!

You'd think that with 'age' it would slow, but in terms of pace/speed, it's just getting better!

:bounce: Go Lindsay!

I agree. Of all the top players in their first match, Lindsay looked the best.

Serena was very, very lucky to get through today. Angela had chances that she didn't take. In two of the service games she lost she was 40-0 up before being broken.

My guess is that Lindsay was put on Court 2 because after her performance yesterday, they figured it would be a slam, bam, wham type of match. Though it is kind of disturbing that PimPim and Sveta both got their matches put on Center Court and not Lindsay... Oh well. As long as she wins I don't care, and I doubt she does either.

I was actually hoping Lindsay/Corina would lose their match against Jankovic/Kostanic ... Lindsay really doesn't need to be wearing her body down, even if she finishes her singles matches in five minutes, and Jankovic really needs the match play on grass due to her unpredictablity in singles ... I also would like to see her excel in doubles and beating Lindsay/Corina would give Lindsay the rest she needs ... Seems it would have helped both, but alas ...

Serve/play well against Jamea, Lindsay ... ^_^

She was screaming at herself around the middle of the second when she up I think. At least we know she's taking every point against everybody seriously ... Jamea put up a decent fight though and I thought she had a nice backhand, got some nice angles on it ... I think she has some promise.

Straightforward match ... Lindsay wins 7 games in a row, Jamea 3 in a row, and then Lindsay 5 in a row ... Just serve well and keep winning.

I'm glad it was a sraight set wins both for energy and tradition.

I prefer her primal screeches about her serve than a slump and I think that her level was only a tad dipped from yesterday and Jamea hit the ball with far more pace and often in better places, Lindsay could just hit Jidkova's weak balls wherever she wanted. A bit of a test but not too much at all.

I completely agree. Jamea was a much better player than Jidkova against Lindsay, which is why Lindsay made more errors and couldn't hit as many winners. The only thing I think Lindsay really could have done better was her serve. It wasn't as dominant today.

L. Davenport - Day 3
Wednesday, June 22, 2005

Q. How would you summarize your game today?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I thought I started off really well. Was up 6‑0, 1‑0 very quickly. Just felt like for the next couple games, again, lost a little concentration, made some errors, let my opponent kind of get back into the match. But was able to then reestablish control and win the last five games.

I felt like I probably played a little bit better in the first round, a little bit more clean throughout the match. But both matches have gone the way I would like them to go, so I've got to keep that in mind.

Q. Did you think it was easy?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: The first set was easy. The second set was not. It was tough. I was down 3‑1. I think she had a point for 4‑1. A couple other games went to deuce. So definitely had some close games there in the second set.

Q. How far do you think you will go? Do you think you will go all the way?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I hope so. I mean, it's hard to say here. We're only at the third day of the tournament. But I hope to keep playing well. That's why I'm here.

Q. Were you affected at all by the surroundings being out on Court 2? Something of a surprise to find yourself not on Centre or No. 1 court?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: No. I mean, here we only play ‑‑ the women only get one match on each show court in between Centre and No. 1, so I think every top player hits Court No. 2 at some point during the tournament. To me, a grass court is always a grass court. I was maybe thrown off a little bit by how fast my court went. The two matches previous went really fast, and then we had a retirement before our. But other than that, I played on Court 2 many times.

It's definitely a little bit louder because you've got the restaurant nearby and stuff, but it was fine.

Q. Do you feel you learnt more about your game today than maybe from your first round match?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I think that Court No. 2 is a little bit tougher court. I've found the bounce is a little bit better on the bigger courts. I don't like to put too much into every match. You know, I'm going to continue to go work on trying to serve a little bit better and trying to keep hitting the balls hard and deep, and hopefully that will just keep working for you.

Q. Can you assess her game? She's one of the few 18‑year‑olds who has shown at least a little bit of promise. Is it hard to tell on grass?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I mean, grass is going to be the toughest indicator of a girl's game, but she's obviously a great athlete. I thought she moved very well. I thought in the beginning I was really getting her ‑‑ like overpowering her on some tough balls. A lot of that is the grass and hitting some balls late. I think when she got a little more confident in the second set, she started to hit the ball a little bit better.

But I'd like to see her work on just trying to be more aggressive. And I know that's tough to do against certain players. So maybe it's not a true indicator today. But I thought if she could just step into the court a little bit more on her chances. You know, coming through quallies and winning a first round here, that's a great first step for her.

Q. Does it suit you that some of the perhaps higher‑profile players in the public's eye in this country are playing on a different day to you? Are you quite happily going on in your own sort of quiet way?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Doesn't really affect me what day I play on or who plays on the day with me. It kind of affects me who plays well against me on that day (laughter).

But, you know, I've never been the one caught up in who's playing on what court or who's being talked about or who's not. I mean, I think I've always just gone about my business the way I intend to and the way I like to.

Q. That's sort of what I meant. The kind of hullabaloo that surrounds Sharapova, Venus, Serena. You're quite happy not having that degree of interest in you?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Uh‑huh (smiling).

Q. When you went back home after Paris, what did you assess tournament‑wise? Were you pleased with the ones you grinded [] it out or were you upset with how you played against Mary?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: It was kind of a weird feeling. It was obviously, you can look back and say quarterfinals of French Open, good achievement. Winning all these matches that I was losing in, great achievement. But, I mean, overall, I felt like my play was not at a very high standard.

Like I said, I mean, that's unbelievable. I was able to get to the quarters and feel like that. But just imagine if I was able to have been a little bit sharper out there. You know, it would have definitely helped a lot. Even going into the quarterfinal match, I mean, it probably would have given me confidence if I felt like, gosh, I was playing really well.

But it was funny. As soon as I step back on a hard court, I was like, "Oh, my gosh, I am so happy that it's over, that part of the year." Instantly I feel like my game got a little bit more aggressive and a little bit more sure‑footed. You know, at the end of the day, good run, happy it was over.

Q. About the levels of attention you get here. I was speaking to Tracy Austin, and she said you guys had been grocery shopping. And you kind of don't get that adulation when you do your daily life. Does it please you, given the success you had in tennis, you can have that balance that you're not mobbed you don't need the security guards, all the rest of it?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I mean, I play tennis, and that's pretty much all I enjoy about it, about the life. I'm pretty quiet. I don't do a lot of media stuff. I think [] Raquel would get mad at me for that. But, no, it's my life. I mean, you choose to make your life whatever you make of it. I've tried to make my life as quiet as possible all these years I've played.

I couldn't be happier with the success I've had on the court and how things go for me off the court.

Q. Have you started to look at the draw now, how things are shaping up, and possibly who you might be facing in later rounds?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I mean, I know my next round opponents, they're playing right now. I know it's a possible match‑up with Kim in the Round of 16. To be honest, I have not looked past that. You can kind of tell who is playing on your half of the draw with who's in the locker room getting ready to play matches, but I wouldn't know who exactly would be my quarterfinal match‑up yet. Tough to look past the first few rounds and tough to look past a player of Kim's stature.

Q. Are you scared of anyone?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: No. I've never been scared. You go into matches more confident on certain days than others, but I've been out here too long and played everybody too many times to feel scared.

Q. Who was the last person you were scared against?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I mean, I can remember for sure, really scared in 1993 or '4, Miami tournament. I had to play Steffi in the quarters. I couldn't believe I was in the quarters. I was just like crying before I went on the court. I was so scared I wouldn't get a game. I lost the first set 6‑0. I remember thinking that I wasn't going to get a game. I was petrified about that match.

I'm leaning towards '94, but it could be '93. But then the second set went to a tiebreak. I couldn't have been happier when the match was over. I was like running through the locker room. I was so happy I got some games.

Q. In 1999, when you were talking about how you felt then, any inklings of that type of feeling now?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Still too early. I mean, you know, it's hard to even remember back to the first few rounds of '99. So, no, I guess I haven't had that inkling yet.

Q. Do rivalries still drive you? If they do, do you get more motivated to play against someone you don't like off court versus someone who you're very friendly with off court?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I prefer to play people the first few times. I mean, like, for instance, Venus, I think we've played like 30 times or something. I don't even know. It's ridiculous. It's like, how many times can you play somebody? Maria, I've only played three times now. That seems to be a little bit more exciting to me.

I don't know if it has so much to do with personal feelings. You certainly don't like to lose to the players that you're not big fans of. But after playing for so long, you kind of get used to doing both.

In the spirit of that question, I prefer to play people that I really haven't played much before.

Q. One top player I spoke with earlier today was saying it makes her uncomfortable playing someone she doesn't necessarily get along with because there's more emotions going on. Do you feel that way?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Does she like me (smiling)? I'm just kidding.

Q. She was speaking about you actually.

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Oh, God!

Q. I'm joking.

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I'm going to be worried about that (laughter).

I mean, it's ‑‑ really, not many players besides Venus and Serena at the top are super close that it's going to affect anybody. If I had to go play singles against Corina, it would be awful. But that's one player that it would really affect. It affects Venus and Serena. Other than that, I mean, maybe one or two of the Russians are close.

I've got to tell you, there's not a whole lot of close love between a lot of the top players.

Q. Are you under any sort of pressure to win this championship?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I mean, I feel pressure in the sense that obviously I know there's not going to be many more opportunities to have at Grand Slams. On the other hand, some of the pressure is relieved by the fact knowing that I've at least won it one time in my career. But that was a long time ago.

So it's kind of a weird feeling. I know that I've got ‑‑ when I keep playing, my chances are becoming smaller and smaller. But who knows. I mean, I'm still enjoying it and would like to get one more under my belt before it's all said and done.

Q. You talked in the last year about being at a fairly contented place in your life, concerning your future. When one hears about the problems some players have in women's tennis, do you consider yourself to be the other side of the coin, someone who has had a long, successful career, has emerged with their sanity intact, as appears to be the case?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Exactly (laughter).

You know, kind of along the lines of the same question earlier. I mean, I couldn't be happier with the way everything has gone in my entire career. The way I've conducted myself on the court and off the court. I don't know. I think I've surrounded myself with great people. I never had crazy parents. I've never had anyone around me that I didn't feel like was in my corner because they wanted something more. They truly cared about me and wanted to see me do well. I feel like I've handled everything that's come at me hard and tough in a great way.

I'm 29 now, happily married. I feel like, you know, whenever my career ends, I'm still going to have a great life.

Q. You came through this pressure‑cooker incredibly well. You obviously could give advice to somebody because you've been through it. You've seen the pitfalls. Is there anything that you would say more than anything else to a young player?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: The toughest thing I see is when you see parents that are crazy. Would have no idea how to give a girl advice on that because I didn't deal with that. And I think that's obviously one of the most detrimental things we have on tour. I never try to give advice to something like that because I don't know how you would possibly deal with that.

I think the most important thing is to keep realistic expectations, know that if you lose first round at Wimbledon, US Open's eight weeks away. How great is that? I mean, you always have another chance. It's going to go up and down. I was always taught how you handle the really poor times and the really tough times is the best indicator of a player.

I mean, it's easy to act well when you're winning well. When you're not playing well or things aren't going your way...

Try to just work hard and know that it's only tennis. Sounds silly when it means so much.

Well the longer she's in the the tournament in both singles and doubles is a good thing at Wimbledon because we know what happened at Wimbledon when she last made the final in both :)

The key for her is to not drop a set in the singles - as soon as she drops a set she'll have to go against tradition.

She also needs to get any little nooks and crannies she's got in her system out of it by the time (if it happens) she plays Kim (in R4).

I loved this part of the press conference:

Liiiiiiiiindsay and Coriiiiiiiina are playing doubs today... hopefully they'll show it on bbci [doubtful, but I can hope].

Speaking of Venus, she's VERY annoying. In her press conferences, whilst everyone else gives a couple of paragraphs per question and tries to explain their games and what happened she just mumbles short confusing answer. It does my head in. Lindsay's BBC interview is on their website as if Kim's, Anastasia's and Svetlana's. Svetlana's is funny when she talks about coke and sprite and fanta if you want my recommendation! It won't be up for long though www.bbc.co.uk/tennis

It won't be up for long though www.bbc.co.uk/tennis (http://www.bbc.co.uk/tennis)

Bloc, ask in GM!
Venus is always like that. In most of her interviews last year at the US Open she seriously sounded like she was on crack.

Actually Andrew, I did.....I'm so used to seeing her darting about, like I see her at Birmingham most years, and I saw her several times at Wimbledon on monday....didn't see her play though. She's looking very bright and healthy - possibly eagre to defend her titles this year ;)

Awwww....I love Cara. I saw her beat Hantuchova in New Haven in 2003. She was so excited. It was cute.

Rache and Becky. I just rang the box office and this woman said that there shouldn't be a problem joining the queue at about 6-8PM on the Monday, or even at about 9PM. But she said if you're unsure you can go to gate 5 a bit earlier and ask the stewards, they would have done a head count and will know, roughtly, how many people are in the queue. Yay.

Way to go bloc! Thanks for that :woohoo: is their anyway all we Lindsay fans could meet up and join the queue together? That way we'll all be sitting together in one place on whichever court Lindsay is on and we can cheer and make ourselves known etc ;)

Yeah, Cara is great.....I love her attitude to the game. She always goes out on court really playing because she loves it and it very often shows through in the way she plays! I just love watching her play doubles too!

Well, I'm going with a mate on the Tues, so I will be the only TOP person. We're going out for lunch or tea or dinner (depending on the queue) first so are not sure what time we're joining

Well, I'm glad she didn't play today because I was at work :o and would have missed it, but tomorrow I will be at home all day :D

Traveling down Wimbledon on monday, so won't know if Lindsay's won (4th round) until we get there, so we're being optimistic by traveling down for 1/4finals before we know the out come!

Why is that excellent?

I'm pretty annoyed Lindsay's not on first, I have to leave for the airport at 1.30! Safina's a threat and I hate not watching, hopefully Portuguese eurosport won't be too bad.

Because it makes the surface even better for her. The bounce was very high this week because of how hot and dry it was. With the rain, it is going to make the bounce very low, and players like Kim are going to have a much more difficult time getting to Lindsay's shots.

Aha, sounds good to me. Very technical. I was thinking it might make the grass slippier and Kim might injure herself :@

Well, I've just seen the OOP for monday and Lindsay is second on Centre after Hewitt vs Dent (play begins at 1pm), So if we get there for 3pm on monday, we might be there before the match begins. Don't know what the likelyhood of getting a ground pass at that time is, but I will probably bring my hand held colour TV and hope to get some sort of BBC reception on it!

If not, we always can get Radio Wimbledon on my phone to keep us up-to-date!

My mum reckons Kim will win (she knows nothing about tennis), she saw the photos I took on Monday and saw the Kim photo and said, "oh, she's got a nice gentle face I think she'll win on monday." Great, thank mum! The strange thing is, so far most of the people I took photos of on monday either lost early or had bad matches. For example, JHH, Tim Henman, Xavier Mallise, Mark Phillipousis, DAni Hantuchova, Franchesca Schiavone.....I took loads of photos of Kim, so hopefully she'll lose ;)

As much as I do sort of like her, and she is sweet, Lindsay must win :D Plus, Lindsay has the better looking coach ;)

Great win today, but I'm still so worried about the 4r match.

I know if she plays like she did today, she wins. In straight sets.

And Kim isn't playing that great either.

But, we find a way to lose these matches. UGH. Please, don't. This is so winnable. Go out and play your game, and you win. Go out confident. Demand KFC's RESPECT. DOMINATE. Go Jim Pierce on her ass.

Yeah I know what you mean Andrew.

Right now on paper Lindsay should win - but we're talking about Kim here - I think it's interesting that they haven't played each other on grass for quite a number of years.

I can only hope that Lindsay can hold on tomorrow and produce a nice straight sets win.

All I know is Sharapova's side of the draw has completely gone wide open since Serena was knocked out today.

 WOW Kelly! you really have made a name for us! You certainly out did me and Becky who managed to get Lindsay's trainer to say, "I love your T-shirts". lol

Well, me and Becky are going down tomorrow to camp but not know what to expect....I am ending up taking my none water proof beach tent with a tarpolian - so i really hope that it doesn't rain :o .....just sorting the last of my stuff out tonight so lindsay better win on Monday cos I don't fancy watching the other people in the Quarters on tuesday....but i will if I have to cos I ain't going all the way to Wimbledon to not watch some tennis! ;)

I'm looking forward to reading your story in detail though Kelly....can't wait to see what you chatted to lovely Adam about :D

Who else is queuing for Quarters tickets then? I know Bloc Party is.....anyone else? I think I might put a sign on my tent saying "Tower of Power - RayRob's tent" or something so you know who it is and can chat if you like ;)

Bye for now,

Yep. I guess the only good thing is that Maria is actually going to lose points no matter what. She has crap quality points all the way through the final.

I think Mauresmo's section is sad too. If she loses before the semis...wow.

Wow... you must have been having such a great time! Keep on doing it, enjoy Wimbledon... it must be so amazing....

GO LINDSAY!!!! Beat the hell out of Kim, stay focused, keep up a high 1st serve precentage, and a high level of play (not asking too much right). You can do it!!
