Ok their is this feeling in the air regarding Anna. It seems like she is on a roll to win her first tourney. (which I think she will) And it also seems that Hingis MAY have trouble defending this year. Anyhow who do u think will have the beter season?

Oops I meant to write better not BETER.. lol

You know I don't know about this answer yet. I mean one can never count out Hingis but something also tells me that Anna is about to breakout and show some quality results this season. Sheesh I need to think on this one. What do u fans think?

Also GO WTA and HAPPY HAPPY days are here again. I love it when the tour begins.

For starters - hingis has a MAJOR advantage over Anna, in that she will be seeded in every event she enters. Not only that, but she will be seeded high. Currently top 4, if her Oz season doesn't go well (or Kims and Serena's go extremely well) then she is still a top 8 seed.

Anna will have the possiblity of facing top players in early rounds untill she gets her ranking up - which could take a while, no matter how well she plays.

Furthermore - Hingis reaches the semi finals or further in slams about 80% of the time (I'm too lazy to check the exact stats over the past few years). I can't imagine that she will all of a sudden start doing much worse than that.

And I can't see Anna, just yet, consistently getting that far a slams, especially with not being seeded.

So I feel Hingis will have a much better year.

That said, I hope to see Anna have a good year, win a couple titles, and get a couple good wins over top players as well.

Hingis at 50% and on one leg still trumps Miss Kournikova-Pornikova. I like Anna despite my flip remark, but come on, there is no comparison between these two. Just the fact that Anna has yet to win ANY event makes a comparison laughable.

Well just think if Anna gets this win and gets her confidence on a high note that she can soar to new heights. (of course she already stands tall in her high-heel shoes though) But seriously if Hingis continues on her low confidence feel and Anna on a high note then who knows.

P.S. I am surprised nobody has yet to say that they will both TIE, considering that they play doubles together. LOL

anyhow I voted for Hingis.

I think if Hingis can beef up that serve a little bit, and maybe serve-volley a bit more, she could keep up with the "big babes". Everyone says she needs to play a power game and hit the gym but I disagree - Hingis doesn't have the stature for it. Plus, she's too smart to be a baseliner.

As for Anna, I think once she wins her first title, the weakest part of her game will improve... her mentality. The talent is there, but the mentality is not. Once she can improve the mentality, she will be a legit contender at the major tournaments.

I dont see a comparison between them. Martina is still a TOP player while Anna is still strugling to be with the TOP.

Why dont we do it between Venus or Anna??? Come on, give Martina some respect!!!!!

Are they entered in OZ Dawn? A Hingis-Anna vs. The "you know who" sisters would be a match made in heaven. In 1998 or so the sisters won in a slam final 8-6 in the third after Anna and Martina had at least one match point.

What If I created, Who is better? Venus or someone in the rank 25 and below? What would you feel? GET REAL!!!!!!!!

Go Jelena: No one has actually insulted Martina at any point in this thread.

As much as I'd like to think that Anna having a better season is a silly idea - the 2002 season is yet to happen, and I can't read the future!

So people are entitled to think and hope for Anna to kick some major butt, all they'd like.

Personally I think the idea of her passing Martina is simply preposterous - but thats just my humble opinion

Now I'm all for sticking up for Martina Hingis - but only when necessary.

They are doubles partners, and freinds - I can see why Dawn may have chosen to link the two together.

Relax!

LOL @ this question! The two are not in the same league. Even if Anna does win this week (which I think she can), she will do so without facing a player ranked above #40! I don't think that will suddenly put her into Hingis' league.

they are not compariable
it's like compare elephant and mouse
the season which has been terrible for Martina I mean 2001, could be extremely good for Anna if she had Martina's results...

Jan 3rd, 2002, 11:47 AM
Well, it depends on if you're doing it like 'who has the better year from a standing start', as opposed to 'who has the best year period'.

It comes down to progress.

If Anna wins 3 Tier V's where she never has to play a player ranked higher than #40. That's a good year. That's progress, in terms of where she was before: Not having won a tournament.

If Martina gets to the final of all 4 slam events, but doesn't win any of them, makes a couple or 3 Tier I and II victories, Anna will still have had the better year imo. Unless she totally tanks it in the bigger events.

Success for Martina means only one thing (as with all the players in the Top 6 imo): Grand Slam titles.

Now, with only 4 at most able to win those, go figure....

Actually Becca understood my point

First of all their friends and they kinda play the same way. But anyway it is possible for Anna to have a better season than Hingis this year. Hingis kinda left last season on a downward trend.. whereas Anna seems to be on a high trend. I can very well see Hingis falling downward and lose more confidence while at the same time Anna may ride high on loads of confidence. I know Hingis is the all around better player but she has been without a slam in 3 years. And what if Anna has a breakthru season? What I mean as the better season was who has the most consistant results this year in slams and tourneys. I didn't choose to use Venus because Venus is kinda in a Galaxy all her own. If she hadn't of won two slams and many tourneys then I would have no problem comparing them both. In fact I could do a poll of who will have the better season between Serena and Anna and Hingis. I would pick Serena, of course but I am bias though

I dont know though I do think Anna is gonna have a good if not great year. I can feel it

^ agrees.

I think if you only look at hard numbers (rankings points, tournaments won), Hingis will come out ahead by a wide margin. But if you look at how they do in 2002 compared to how they did in 2001/2000 my money's on Anna.

If she doesn't get hurt, at worst, Martina will make the QF's or better of every tourament she enters, and will wina couple Tier III tournaments. She may lose in the first round a Wimbldon again. But she'll play an extra tournament or two in the fall and she'll still end the year ranked #8 or so.

I very much doubt Anna will even be able to play 17 tournaments. If she ends the year inthe top twenty, that will be a feet.

Dawn may have hit on what could be the question of the month.
Hingis was definitely on the downswing and her confidence is in a falling spiral.
ANNA is playing well and her confidence is rising as high as her ever rising bank account.

ANNA will have a better year than the Swiss Kid.

TR

I agree with the freedesigner.
If Martina does not win a couple of big tournaments or a Major, she has accomplished little with her year. OTOH if Anna wins a couple be they small tournaments it will be a big improvement. Especially if she is able to get her ranking in the top 20. She will have had the better season.

Also why did some people get bothered when I compared Anna with Hingis? Williams fans didn't get upset when the same was being wrote about Serena and Venus. I mean let's see, Serena won 1 slam back in 1999. Whereas Venus won 4 slams the past two years and HAS A HUGE winning record over Serena?? Imho it is kinda along the same lines as comparing Hingis and Anna if you ask me. But then again alot of people do realize that Serena is to never be taken lightly and that maybe her rank doesn't reflect her ability. I guess

I think it is really difficult to say how either player will do this early in the season. We have yet to see how well Martina is recovered from her injury and while Anna is playing well, she has yet to face a player ranked above the top 40 in this tournament.

If I were to make a guess, I would venture that if Anna does win Auckland and a few other small tourneys and improves her ranking this year while Hingis has a season like last year than Anna will definantly have a better season than Martina. However, if Martina were to improve her results from last season and Anna won Auckland and a few other tourneys, then Martina would have the better season.

Unfortunately, we will have to wait til the end of the season to see who was right!

i assume dawn is trying to say their performance relative to that in 2001.

i feel that they will both have better years and anna will have the better year because i think simply by winning a title, she will have a better year. i dont see how such a talented player can go without winning at all.

of course martina will win THE grand slam but that's a different story ;)

GO MARTI!

Most of us who answered this question assumed that Anna would win teh title in Auckland, and we took it from there.

Now that she lost badly to tiny, claycourter, #88 Anna Smashnova -- in typical Anna fashion, losing a supposedly easy match the round after a very tough win -- opinions based on this imagined tournament win may have to be revised.

We have yet to see how Martina is doing, though. It is all a big and enthralling Question Mark!

Perhaps the question should have been:who will have the better season, Anna Kournikova or Anna Smashnova?

Dawn darling, who will have the better season? Anna or Martina? As your and my favorite John McEnroe used to say, "you cannot be serious"! Dawn, please tell me you are pulling my leg. Or my tail! You know I adore Anna. And comparing her to Dementieva is fine. Maybe even Dokic. But not Hingis. Who is an all time great. We know Martina's game has slipped. But not enough where she has fallen anywhere close to Anna's level. Anna, unfortunately is in a rut, and can't handle the pressure. She needs a coach and a sports psychologist to help her fulfill her potential. Anna may, and hopefully someday will get into the league of Dokic and Clijsters. But that may be a reach at this point. Hingis? I can't see it.

P.S. - The Princess Of The Penalty Box! Dawn, I like to read your posts. You are one of the best posters on the board. But for suggesting this question, I'm going to have to give you a 2 minute penalty for instigating! To the penalty box, please!

P.P.S. - I'm only kidding, you know!

LMAO@ the cat.

Oh I have missed u my furry lil feline:)

Actually I am serious lol. This question was asked due to HIngis and Anna being top high profile players. And I liking to start threads concerning them two. (the comparison is a good one regarding tennis conversation) IMHO.:) I mean Hingis's confidence was soaring low last season and with the title win Anna's could of soared. Thus this season Anna could have a good 2002 with Hingis having a not so good 2002. It can happen. But with Anna's recent loss maybe not. Actually I voted for Hingis.:)

I lurve yah cat., by the way your one of my favorite posters too.

You can be pretty fiesty, you know! Actually Dawn, if your fists were flying, that would have meant five minutes in the penalty box for you! Thanks for letting me have a little fun with you.

well, I thought it was pretty obvious that Dawn was asking 'who will have the best season, relative to what is expected of them on the basis of what they have shown in the past'. In other words, Hingis can only have a good season if a) most importantly, she wins a Slam or, failing that, b) if she picks up LOTS of Tier I's and II's, i.e. more than anyone else, or c) finishes with a decent record against the Big Babes. Anna can have a good season if she makes a Slam QF or wins a title. Even with Anna's dreadful Auckland loss (when the only people standing between you and your first title are Anna Smashnova, Tatiana Panova and Silvija Talaja, there are no excuses for not winning), it's apparent that she's definitely getting her game back after last year; until we see Hingis play, we won't see how she's reacted to 2001. Of course Hingis will have the better year in terms of points, but I actually think that Anna will have the better relative year. If she finishes in the top 20 it'll be quite an achievement - how many other players have improved their ranking from outside the top 70 to inside the top 20 in one year?

I think Anna and Martina will both enjoy better performances than last year (which was a real bummer for both...having suffered injuries). Martina has admitted she actually did some real training and that should put her in good stead...Anna however still believes all those adoring fans who love her instead of her accomplishments..I see where she is sporting a low sexy belt on her outfit this year....so she is still concentrating on her "looks" rather than improving her game...and that my dear Anna will be your downfall!! But go ahead and surprise me and the world who is waiting for that FIRST victory. I think the Spice duo will compete very competitively though!! Go Gals!!
