Mauresmo retrouve ses esprits
lun 20 jui, 21h12

Amelie Mauresmo's reputation of failing when the going gets tough, will certainly be tested over the coming days. For the moment, though, following her unexpected early defeat at Eastbourne, she can be satisfied with a well executed opening match which hardly stretched her talents.

Mauresmo required just 61 minutes to dispatch the Hungarian Melinda Czink in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. Czink had arrived at these Championships with the benefit of playing three gruelling matches in last week's qualifying competition at Roehampton. There she lost in the final, but then gained a second chance as she was handed a 'lucky loser' ticket.

Mauresmo, as mentioned, honed her own game on the south coast at Eastbourne where she lost rather unfortunately to the 18 year-old Russian Vera Douchevina, a former junior Wimbledon champion who then went on to reach the final of the Hastings Direct International.

Despite their respective recent hiccups, Mauresmo showed she had the better pedigree by dominating her opponent from the outset.

Her serve proved too hot for the Hungarian, whilst her speed about the court ensured she retained command of the proceedings, including the net. It also allowed her to play with a freedom which produced some uninhibited tennis reflected in her 25 winning shots. The 20 unforced errors made by Czink led to the Hungarian showing flashes of irritation.

The third seed, who dropped her serve once, never really looked threatened. It almost looked as if she was out on the practice courts as she broke Czink's serve four times, delivered eight aces despite only delivering 52 per cent of her firsts serves in, but converting 82 per cent of them.

Mauresmo, who is also prone to injury, declared herself free of any physical problems. "I'm feeling pretty good physically," she said. "I hope to get a few more matches to really feel one 100 per cent on court and with my game."

And as far as her own chances are concerned, she simply added: "We'll see - it's always tough to see until the end! One has to play match after match at these big tournaments.

"I had to really forget last week's disappointment and I am satisfied - it's not that I was doubting myself because my game is still there."

A. Mauresmo - Day 1
Monday, June 20, 2005

Q. The first time in two years at a Grand Slam the top five ranked women are here. How are you feeling in terms of your health? Do you think this Wimbledon then is perhaps the biggest test of recent years?

AMELIE MAURESMO: Well, on my ‑‑ physically I feel great so far. I've been free of injuries for even last week and now I'm feeling pretty good physically. You know, need to get hopefully a few more matches to really I think feel a hundred percent on the court on my game.

And talking about the fact that all the top players are here, I think really it's one of the most open tournament that we have. I think it's great that everybody's here ‑ not only for us but of course for the media and for the spectators. You know, I feel that even though for the last couple years maybe not all of the top players were here, I still think it was ‑‑ it's already a big event and everybody's doing their best to be here and perform at their best level.

It's even better that Justine is back from injury and Kim as well. Yeah, it's good.

Q. Do you think you have a good chance this year in terms of the way the draw has fallen for you?

AMELIE MAURESMO: We'll see. We'll see. It's always tough to see until the end. I guess all these big tournaments are match after match, and that's what I'm trying to do.

Q. How much of a relief was it to get your first match out of the way today after what happened at Eastbourne last week?

AMELIE MAURESMO: I was still pretty confident about my game, about the way I play. I had to really forget about last week's disappointment pretty quickly and go back to practice to make sure all these little things that were wrong in Eastbourne went the right way today. And that's what I did.

Yeah, very satisfied but not a big relief like if I was doubting a lot. You know, I knew my game was still there.

Thanks to bonkers on Gerd's!

article from Wimbledon~
Mauresmo Stays on Course
Wednesday, June 22, 2005

Amelie Mauresmo was smiling today. The third seed brushed aside Spain's Maria Sanchez Lorenzo 6-1, 6-3 in just 46 minutes of almost peerless grass court tennis to reach the third round of Wimbledon.

Mauresmo has often been described as the lady-in-waiting for the title. She has all the attributes needed to win Wimbledon and twice got close to succeeding. She reached the semi-finals in 2002 and again last year but on both occasions failed to get further.

It has been frustration on all Grand Slam fronts for the likeable French No.1. She might have roared to world No.3 this year but she is still without any of the four titles that mean so much to the professional tennis players on the women's circuit.

Her form is unpredictable, as her surprising opening round defeat against qualifier Vera Douchevina from Russia at Eastbourne last week proved. This followed a roller-coaster few months in which she enjoyed a respectable run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open before a disappointing loss in the third round of the French Open against promising Serbian 17-year-old Ana Ivanovic. But today we saw what Mauresmo is capable of, with a display that would have graced Centre Court.

The defeat of Justine Henin-Hardenne has removed one of the favourites for the women's title and given new heart to the other Championship contenders. That was certainly clear from Mauresmo's demeanour on No.2 Court against Sanchez Lorenzo. She played with a freshness and confidence that should be a warning to anyone who believes they can stop her.

Mauresmo's suspect temperament was absent and the 25-year-old was in her element. Poor Sanchez Lorenzo must have wondered what she had done to deserve such a draw. The Spaniard, her hair swishing in a pony tail, let rip with a few solid ground strokes but Mauresmo used all her craft on grass to demolish a worthy opponent. Sanchez Lorenzo even had a first serve returned with a winning drop shot by Mauresmo in the third game of the opening set.
Mauresmo was simply irresistible, charging the net at every available opportunity to overpower an opponent ranked 113 in the world.

If Mauresmo can maintain this form, it could carry her to the most coveted ladies' tennis title. That, perhaps, would give her enough of a lift to also start collecting the French, Australian and US Open championships to realise her enormous potential.

A. Mauresmo - Day 3
Wednesday, June 22, 2005

Q. We saw you at Eastbourne last week, and then today there was a great big difference.

AMELIE MAURESMO: Yeah, you noticed it (laughing)?

Yeah, you know, obviously, I'm feeling much better, you know, as the rhythm is coming. You know, it was still good for me to go to Eastbourne because I really got to practice on the grass, which is a very special surface and different from what we play on all year long.

So, you know, I still think it was a good idea to go there even though I didn't play a good match. But, you know, I kept ‑‑ after that loss last week, I kept working for the last few days and, you know, had a pretty good first round and obviously a very good second round.

Q. Can you remember playing better on grass?

AMELIE MAURESMO: That would be difficult. Yeah, it would be difficult because I really felt, you know, everything was working very well ‑ not only of course my service games, but also, you know, I was returning pretty well, doing many things on her returning games.

Yeah, hopefully I'll keep going like this.

Q. Ever done a dropshot off a first serve before?

AMELIE MAURESMO: Was it first serve or second serve?

Q. Yeah, first serve.

AMELIE MAURESMO: First serve, I don't think so (smiling).

No, I was feeling great on the court, you know. Really controlling the match very well. It's also easier when you're ahead, you know, to start doing different things. Once you have the break, you know, it makes it a little easier.

So, you know, I tried ‑‑

Q. You dropped just four points on your service.

AMELIE MAURESMO: In the first set?

Q. In the whole match.

AMELIE MAURESMO: In the whole match? That's pretty good (laughing).

Yeah, I didn't know. I just got the stats. So, yeah, that's good. I mean, I've been serving very well, following that serve, coming in, you know, especially on the first serve, and being very effective on the second serve as well. So, yeah.

But, again, very great match. I mean, very good match. Nothing really much to say about that. It's just hope, you know, that I'll keep going like this and keep having these feelings on the courts.

Q. You were very effective again coming to the net.

AMELIE MAURESMO: Yep.

Q. Do you feel that might be the added weapon you need?

AMELIE MAURESMO: I think so, especially on the grass, you know. That's what I did last year and a few years ago also when I reached the semis. So I think it's important. Even though the grass is pretty slow, it's still effective to get in, to really put some pressure on the opponent and make sure that you make her make the pass. So, you know...

And, again, when you're serving well, then it makes it of course very easier to come in and volley.

Q. Are you bothered too much about the way other people might be talking when people mention about potential champions and perhaps you're not mentioned in there? But anybody who saw you today, maybe that changed their mind.

AMELIE MAURESMO: Yeah, well, I don't really, you know, pay attention. It's good, you know, if the focus is not on me, if the attention and the expectations are on other players, you know. It's fine with me. I just do it my way. I know I'm playing good on this surface, and I'm looking forward for the next one.

Q. You were fine on Court 2 today? No problems with that? It is known as the "Graveyard of the Champions."

AMELIE MAURESMO: Oh, well, I had some good matches on that court, actually. Last year also I played some great matches. So, you know, for me, it's fine. It's a good one.
Q. Could be the making of a champion.

AMELIE MAURESMO: We'll see (laughing).

Q. With all the attention you get at the French, how does that compare coming here?

AMELIE MAURESMO: Oh, it's very quiet for me coming here, you know. It's very different. I guess it's like, you know, Tim at the French and then coming here is very different for him.

So, you know, it's a lot of pressure coming down after the French and also the attention is on, as I just said, you know, on other players, especially maybe on the men's side on Tim Henman.

So, you know, I'm doing great with that. I'm doing good like this.

Q. That would be a preference? Would that be a preference of yours...

AMELIE MAURESMO: Being here, very quiet?

Q. Yes.

AMELIE MAURESMO: Well, so far I've been doing better here than at the French, so it's obviously I'm feeling much better here. Also the fact that it's coming right after the French Open, you know. I take it very differently from maybe even the US Open or the Australian Open. So it's usually coming after, you know ‑ for the last few years ‑ after disappointment in Paris. So, you know, taking things very differently here.

Q. You're such a good player. Do you believe one day you will be a Grand Slam champion?

AMELIE MAURESMO: I hope so, you know. That's why I keep working, I keep playing. And I think I can do it, you know. Of course I think that; otherwise, I'm not sure I would still play (smiling).

Q. Have you looked at the draw at all and who your potential opponents might be?

AMELIE MAURESMO: No. I know the next round. I know that Perry won. So that's all I know.

Q. Do you know much about her at all?

AMELIE MAURESMO: I've played against her in doubles only, never in singles. I watched a little bit of the second set that she played today against Tanasugarn. You know, she seemed to be coming in also a lot and serving pretty big serves. So we'll see.

Q. Do you sort of look at the draw and think, "Maybe I might get her in later rounds, or get her," or do you just have to take each match?

AMELIE MAURESMO: I take it each match, actually, depending. But this year I haven't looked at the draw at all.

Q. Until the final?

AMELIE MAURESMO: (Smiling)

OH god Lindsay is in the form of her life like she was at the Aussi Open 99 where nobody except Amélie could get near her. I want to see a high first serve percentage, lots of slice backhands, lots of net play and if you could manage it could you play the match of your life out there on Thursday? This is going to be unbelievably tough for Amélie but she's just got to step it up.

Allez Amélie you are built for grass!

P.S If Amélie or Sharapova make the final I win the washing machine from the WTA fantasy tennis just for some added incentive!

Its been a long time since Ive been so nervous watching a match!

Id forgotten just how awful an epxerience it is to watch tennis when you really care about the outcome, Ive not suffered like that since Julie Halard was in her pomp! Oh its agony...

So many "OH YES!" moments in the match, a few "OH NO!!!!" moments too!

At the start of the tournie my support for Amelie was as much financial in its source (the bet!) as emotional...but watching her play throughout Wimbledon, the finanical aspect has gradually gone out the window...I want her to win becuase she and her fans deserve it.

There is still hope! :)
