Just wondering. Alot of peaple said that Jennifer won Player of the year because she was a better story than Venus. Venus did well last year so she was expected to well again. Jenniger was not expected to do well so when she did it was a big story. So my question is if Anna wins her first tournament(big story) will she be in contention for player of the year.
BTW I am really hoping that Anna wins so she can get this monkey off her back so she can play with less pressure. This tournament may be just what Anna needds.

No, but if she wins two Grand Slam Titles, she might fall into contention.

Alot of people are going to criticze the fact that it's a Tier IV. I think if Anna wins a grand slam event, then maybe it could become a "feel good" story like Jennifer's. Personally, I think Anna winning this smaller event could do wonders for her confidence. She just doesn't seem to have the mentality to slug it out in a final. However, this tournament could give her that needed experience. It should be noted even when she started out, she never played small events. I think that was her mistake.

No Anna won't be player of the year if she wins a tourney. She needs to win a Tier 1 or Tier 2 and wins some slams. Actually I do think she can win the HIGH-HEEL player of the year though
Actually I hope she wins this tourney it will do wonders for her esteem. I also would like to see her get a decent coach.

I don't think so. Lets see how she does against Venus or Serena. She may win a title, but isn't the one she is playing a tier IV?

Based on Capp's award it would seem likely that ANNA would get the same awards if she were to win ONE Grand Slam title.

However, for every title that she wins, of any tier level, ANNA will probably gain an additional 5-7 million bucks in endorsements.

Anna will have a to do a lot more than win her first tournament. OK, she's coming off an injury, but please.

So if Elena Dementieva wins 2 tournaments, we'll just give it to her, regardless of what anyone else does?

Some people may have a problem with Jen winning it last year, but the fact remains that whichever way you look at it she was one of the Top 3 (Lindsay and Venus being the only other players with a shout at it, Lindsay even less so) players in the world last year. On record and on form.

If Anna puts that kind of year together, then we can talk about it.

In answer to your question...no doubt, and she will be on the short list of all time greats ...just like Capriatti

I'm afraid not. While it will be great if Anna does in fact win this title, a tier 4 event win will certainly not make her the player of the year. I hate to say it, but Anna winning a tier 4 event and Jennifer winning two slams and making the semifinals of two other slams is more deserving of that title no matter what anyone says. If Anna does indeed have a break out year and reaches the final of a slam or wins slam or even wins a couple of tier 1 events then I think she would contend for most improved player or comeback player. But Anna just merely winning a tier 4 event does not and should not put her in contention for player of the year.

Having made that statement, I hope to see Anna win @ Auckland!

Player of the Year? Well, just like some of the responses here, she would have to do something spectacular to earn that award. Maybe her first grand slam and a few other titles would be impressive. If she does, "Most Improved Player" would suit her better.

Just off the top of my head, I would say that there's no way for Anna to get POY, but when I think about it may not be so far fetched.

For one thing, nobody's mentioned the all-mighty media here, and one thing about them is that their perceptions can become reality if they so chose, regardless of what tennis fans think.

And with Anna already being rich, beautiful and famous, they will go ballistic if she starts to win ANYTHING consistantly, and it will be THE story, and they can give whatever criteria they
want, and well you know the rest.

Regardless, hope Anna has a sucessful season.

don't make me laugh!!!!!

There's no way in hell miss kournikova will be player of the year by winning a little tiny tier IV event (with no top20 players in it!)...even if she wins 3 of them (and that would be a big year for her!!) she won't be a contender!

The only thing that people will remember is that 2002 was the year Anna won her first event! But let's wait until saturday...Anna still has to win 2 matches to get there!!

There seems to be some problem here with Capriati's award. I don't understand why. What's wrong with Capriati's award? She won two Slams, got the the semis in the other two, and reached No. 1. She was undefeated against Hingis, who held No. 1 almost the whole year. Venus can't claim this. Venus did not do this, although she beat Capriati in all their meetings. A toss up? Though Hingis has somewhat devalued the No. 1 slot, it is still the No. 1 slot, and Capriati did get to No. 1 and she didn't get tossed in the first round of a Slam. Barbara Schett isn't exactly Jelena Dokic, Schett played mediocre for the whole year. Venus has no excuse for that lousy showing. Hey, I like Venus (I like Serena a lot more, so don't accuse me of being a hater), but Venus made some major boo-boo's this year, Capriati won that award fair and square. I hate to see it denigrated.
