Refreshed Hingis raring to go
By JOHN THIRSK
03jan02

A REJUVENATED Martina Hingis is ready to take on the tennis world after spending a month training in the mountains outside her Swiss home in Trubbach.

Last year, Hingis surprised fashion pundits by wearing a top with one short sleeve and the other long. Yesterday she promised another new design for the 2002 season, after having already approved the new look on the drawing board.
It seems hard to believe the Swiss Miss is only 21 years old.

She has won five grand slam titles, including three Australian Opens, but has gone through the past two years without a championship triumph.

"I haven't played for some time without an injury, but now I'm feeling fine," Hingis said. "It was beautiful in the mountains -- cold and at high altitude -- and I prepared myself mentally and physically for the new year. I have a new attitude and new energies.

"I couldn't play much tennis because of the ankle, but I did a lot of walking, riding a bike and working out in the gym."

Hingis's game is based on her athleticism, court speed and finesse of shot.

Asked whether she had changed her training regime and "muscled up" to take on the brute power of the Williams sisters and Amelie Mauresmo, the taller Lindsay Davenport and the new-look Australian and French Open titleholder, Jennifer Capriati, the answer was: "No."

"They don't all have to have big muscles to win tournaments," she said.

"You just have to see what Lleyton Hewitt, Sebastien Grosjean and Roger Federer have done in tournaments.

"My game is about shot-making skills, technique, using the court and my speed."

Yes, Martina, as you said, you don't have to have big muscles to compete with big girls.

"My game is about shot-making skills, technique, using the court and my speed."

It's great idea!
You will be on top again soon,..very soon!

Good luck to Martina in 2002!

it will be really interesting to see if Martina has some new tactics to bring to the game this year. She seemed so out of it at the end of last season.
