I think I might need this!

I forgot to tell everyone I was driving thru Coral Gables a few days ago looking for an art supply store. By chance, I passed a motel called the "Gables Inn". Isn't this were Jen got busted in '94? I swear that was the name, but not totally sure.

All that crap seems like a lifetime ago.

No, just joking. whenever I want something unneccesary, I say "I need this" to let myself know that I am a fool.

But, damn, I really think I might need that People mag!

So VBN, do you know if the motel was the Gables Inn?

Mark - yes it was.

CAPRIATI ARRESTED
By Nicole Winfield, Associated Press Writer
APn 05/17/94

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) -- As a precocious 14-year-old, Jennifer Capriati gave the veterans of tennis all kinds of trouble. Now, at 18, Capriati is the one finding trouble.
The tennis star was arrested Monday on marijuana possession charges after police looking for a runaway searched her $50-a-night motel room.
Capriati was released and an arraignment date will be set within five days, said Mort Lucoff, a spokesman for Dade County courts. If convicted of the misdemeanor, she will probably have only to submit to counseling, he said.
Her arrest came five months after she was cited by Tampa police for allegedly shoplifting a $15 ring from a mall.
Capriati could not be reached for comment. Her lawyer, John Ross, did not immediately return a call to his office. His home number is unlisted. Barbara Perry, Capriati's agent, had no immediate comment.
Her younger brother, Steven, who said he spoke to Capriati by telephone, told The New York Times she "was crying a little bit, but was OK."
Police went to the Gables Inn after receiving an anonymous tip that a 17-year-old runaway girl was in Capriati's room, police said. Capriati let detectives search the room, and marijuana was found in her knapsack, police said.
While police were conducting the search, the runaway and 19-year-old Tom Wineland of Key Biscayne drove up in Capriati's sports car, and they, too, were charged with drug offenses, Sgt. Mitch Fry said.
The runaway was charged with possession of heroin and released to her parents. Wineland was charged with possession of suspected crack and drug paraphernalia and was jailed on $6,000 bail.
Fry said he didn't know how the three knew one another.
Capriati had recently been living in Boca Raton with friends after moving out of her parents' home near Tampa. She told Sports Illustrated she was "chillin', just having fun," and taking SAT preparation classes at Florida Atlantic University.
Capriati turned pro at 13 and won her first pro tournament a year later.
In 1990, at 15, she became the youngest player to win a match at Wimbledon. She reached the Wimbledon semifinals in 1991 and has a career record of 149-45.
She has won more than $1.5 million as a professional.
Capriati has not played tennis since losing in the first round of the U.S. Open last August. She left the tour because of an injured elbow. In January, she said she wouldn't return to playing until after her high school graduation in June.
She later began talking about the importance of having a life outside tennis.
In December, Capriati was acccused of shoplifting in Tampa. Her agent said she had absent-mindedly wandering off with a silver ring. The matter was settled without penalty; she was a juvenile at the time

Thanks VBN! They always called that motel a "flea bag" in the press, but it looked fine to me. Jen always did have great taste (except for that 1993 Dorothy Hamill haircut that made her look too old lady! hehe).

Mark,

I saw the Gables Inn too during my vacation last summer in Miami. First thing I thought was like: 'wasn't Jen arrested here in 1994'? But I assumed then that it just was one out of a thousand Gables Inn that this probably wasn't the one. The one you are talking about is located near Miami University, isn't it? Next to the Dixie Highway.

For that there article above, it looks as if Jen was plain unlucky to get arrested, and caught.

17-year-old runaway girl was in Capriati's room

Had she been in rehab before her arrest, though??

As far as I know she has been in rehab for two weeks after her arrest. But I can remember that I read somewhere that she had been in rehab before I believe in February of the same year (1994).

Yes the motel was on Dixie Highway in Coral Gables, around 30th or so. I was just looking for a store and happened to see it. Looked okay to me. I kinda laughed and kept driving.

Well, she had a lot of money, so there's really had no need to go to a cheap motel ...

Now that this thread has been revived....seems like an appropriate place for my question. I recently read an article that briefly mentioned some assault charge on a waiter I didn't know about before. I also saw that Snuffkin mentioned this incident (although that post said it involved a "waitress") in a separate thread in GM. I didn't want to post my question there to avoid any negative comments from non-Jenners, but does anyone know the scoop on this? Just curious....

ok - i think this is how it goes - ive heard 2 versions.

1) She punched a waitress who was "hitting on" her boyfriend, this was 1996 just before(?) the French Open

2) She was in an argument with her boyfriend, went to punch him, he ducked and she ended up punching the waitress who was standing behind/next to Jen's boyfriend ...

...i'll go look :)

It's SO hard finding stuff on this....

Stay tuned for Wimbledon! "Jennifer Capriatt’s wayward punch strikes waitress." "After getting bounced from the French Open..." Tennis star "Capriati got into an argument with her boyfriend ... A punch intended for her boyfriend instead hit (the) waitress, who was standing nearby." We all know that the best tennis players study the masters -- who in this case must be Andrea Jaeger.

Five days after getting bounced from the French Open, Jennifer Capriati's thundering right hand may have hit more than tennis balls during a recent altercation with a night-club waitress. According to police, Capriati got into an argument with her boyfriend late Sunday night at Bubba's Beach Club. A punch intended for her boyfriend instead found the left eye of waitress Angela Larson, who was standing nearby, a report said. Tampa Police spokesman Steve Cole said Larson initially waived pressing charges but filed a battery complaint two days later.

vbn, thank you!! You’re the best!! :) :)

Bubba's Beach Club - too funny. Call me jaded, but this whole story makes me laugh. I like!

BTW: Couldn’t find a digital camera to borrow in time for this weekend so I bought my own. Now if I can just manage to squeeze in reading the 3 volume, 848 page technical manual by Saturday. The good new is, after this I’ll be qualified to help design the space station.

What do you reckon the chances are that someday, someone will do the 'Jennifer Capriati Tour'. You can just see it now...here's where she first played tennis with Chrissie, here's where she played her first tournament, here's where she got arrested, here's where she got arrested, again, here's where she lamped a waitress with an IQ only marginally larger than her waist. Oh, somebody must have considered it as a business, after all you can go at look at the homes of the famous so why not the other places associated with them?

As for the ring incident VBN, two schools of thought
1) with her money, and the fact that she still had it on as she left the store - a genuine mistake.

2) a cry for help and the beginning of her publicised rebellious streak.

It always confused me that if she was intending to steal it, then why had she not put it in her pocket.

Either way, she could have passed it off as an accident had she not been busted a few months later.

As for the rehab questions, I've read so many differing accounts. Some say she had been in a couple of times before she got arrested, some say she was being treated not for drugs but for 'alcohol dependency'. So many stories came out as soon as she was arrested that day in May. The guy she was caught with was pretty nice when he spilled the beans (sadly enough I still have the copies of the papers with it all in) ..and then there was the ex-boyfriend who tried to sue her for millions after he alleged she got him hooked back on hard drugs after he'd kicked them. It's a part of her life we'll never get the answers to I feel. But part of me would love to know...just out of curiousity.

That's funny you say this, I was thinking of doing a "mini-tour" myself. I just moved to Florida from DC last year and all this "history" happened right around me. Boca Raton - I could throw a rock and hit it, Miami's an hour and Tampa is within driving distance. I would take such a tour if one existed! And while I'd feel guilty reading about her lost years (knowing how personal it is and that she'd probably rather not have people find out) I have to admit, if someone published it, I'm not sure I could hold myself back from reading it.

Oizo – Living in “Queensland” has its advantages. I’m thinking someday Jen'll be riding by in her Ferrari, stop, offer me a ride and we’ll become best friends. (It’s a sad, pathetic fantasy but it’s mine.)

Gold diggers? How ‘bout the ho-bag waitress who didn’t initially file charges, but did two days later? Think someone whispered in her ear about the money she passed up?

Hey Happy Cappy,

I will be in Orlando next week - any suggestions on what to see ( from the "Jen's Tour") in that area? Sure I will be working from 8 to 8, but who knows, I might find some time.

Please let me know :-)

Note: I do not want to go to Saddelbrook - I hate to invate someone's privicy, especially Jennifer's, even I know she will not be there.

Thanks in advance,
Eugene

VBN, I'm sure she still had the ring on as she left the store. Admittedly, she's not the brightest bulb in the box, but I think that even she could have realised that to evade the authorities - hide it, if she intended to steal it, of course.

As for the 'gold digging twat' as you put it, I seem to recollect him trying to get around $4million out of her. Hardly a drop in the ocean then...

$4million
woah!! yeah like his drug addiction cost him THAT much - bastard i hope he got nothing :)

I can understand putting the ring on your finger to nick it, as if it was already there in the first place...?

Apr 17th, 2002, 09:23 PM
Unsurprisingly, neither the $4million drug case from the ex, nor the case from the waitress she smacked, ever made it to court. I don't even think there was ever a mention of out-of-court settlements. They saw a chance to make a fast buck...and failed.

Speaking of the "Jen tour"...I had to go to the art supply store again today outside Coral Gables and I made sure I got a good look at the Gables Inn this time. Maybe I should take picture of it and we can make a digital Jen tour!! It did not look like a flea bag motel at all.

Brain fart....I forgot I was sitting next to an older couple during the Monica Seles/Farina Elia match at the Nasdaq and they were staying in the same hotel in Key Biscayne as Jennifer. They said their daughter had seen jen in her bright red new Ferrari earlier that day and she looked ultra glamourous driving it. They also saw Monica in the hotel gym doing the Precor ellipitcal machine right next to them the day before. Some people have all the luck.

Goshka, You're going to Orlando to WORK? You might very well be the only person on the planet who isn't going there for DisneyWorld. Congrats!

Unfortunately, being only a recent addition to Jen's fanbase, I don't know if anything noteworthy happened in or around Orlando. Maybe someone else can help out??

And BTW: IF you have time for DisneyWorld, I can recommend Epcot and I hear Universal Studios is good if you like movies. I spent most of my life successfuly avoiding DW until last year when I was finally dragged there (kicking and screaming I might add) by my friends, but it wasn't as nearly as cheesy as I thought it would be. Hope you have fun whatever you end up doing!! :)
