ACE Hot List 2005

In the June 2005 issue of ACE (British tennis-magazine) is their list of the ten sexiest players. They took the top ten as voted for by fans on the Internet, and handed these ten players over to their panel of experts to rank them in order of aesthetic preference:

1. Maria Sharapova: "very tall, well proportioned and has very delicate features"
2. Gisela Dulko: "very pretty and quite classy. She just looks really nice and sweet"
3. Daniela Hantuchová: "great figure and very pretty"
4. Elena Dementieva: "she's always had long legs and been very feminine"
5= Barbara Schett: "she's got that glint in her eye. Very sexy"
5= Jelena Dokic: "she's got better as she's got older"
7. Ana Ivanovic: "she oozes sex appeal"
8. Tatiana Golovin: "she's got the all-round look of somebody who's confident in her looks"
9. Marta Domachowska: "has a really healthy look; she radiates vitality"
10. Jennifer Capriati: "has that American high school look - sparkly teeth, etc. Obviously has a naughty side as well"

If I had to rank these same ten players - and this is purely in terms of superficial attractiveness with no regard to tennis-qualities - my list would be as follows:

1. Daniela Hantuchová
2. Jelena Dokic
3. Tatiana Golovin
4. Maria Sharapova
5. Gisela Dulko
6. Marta Domachowska
7. Barbara Schett
8. Elena Dementieva
9. Jennifer Capriati
10. Ana Ivanovic

ACE explained why Maria is #1 in their Hot List as follows:
>>>
Described by some experts as the most marketable woman in the history of women's sports, Sharapova appears to have the lot: the statuesque figure, pretty looks, intelligence, maturity and eloquence. Most importantly, she has the talent to match her physical attributes. Currently ranked second in the world, at the age of just 18 the Wimbledon champion is already one of the most photographed women in the world. "Sometimes people forget I'm just 17," the blonde Russian said last year.

UK TV-alerts

I believe Maria is likely to make an appearance at this year's Laureus Awards, which are televised in the UK on Thursday 19th May, 19:15 - 20:00 on Channel 5.

There are three adverts with Maria currently doing the rounds on UK television (e.g. ITV1, Channel 4 and Channel 5):

1. The Nike Free advert with all the bare feet.

2. A second Nike Free advert in which Maria and Roger Federer are folding up the shoes like Rubik's Cubes.

3. An advert for Palmolive which shows Maria applying the deodorant, going on court, winning and holding up a trophy. This advert is available for downloading for a limited time at http://www.wtaworld.com/showthread.php?t=166213

Here's my transcription of the Palmolive advert:
>>>
MARIA SHARAPOVA:
It's the ultimate stress-test.
Millions of eyes on me.
How do I handle Centre Court?
Preparation - right down to the deodorant I choose.

ANNOUNCER:
New Palmolive deodorant.
Effective 24-hour anti-perspirant protection with aloe vera.
Palmolive cares for delicate underarm skin.

MARIA SHARAPOVA:
So when your Centre-Court moment comes, you're prepared - to win.

ANNOUNCER:
New Palmolive deodorant. Performs under pressure.

For those in the UK, Channel 5's coverage of the Laureus Awards did include some brief footage of Maria from the Wimbledon 2004 final as they showed the nominees for the "World Sportswoman of the Year" award (won by Kelly Holmes).

Roger Federer won "World Sportsman of the Year", while Boris Becker and Martina Navrátilová presented a couple of the awards.

"Laureus Sports Awards 2005" is repeated on Sunday night/Monday morning at 12:25am, and Maria's bit is seven minutes into the programme.
