Sharapova Seeks to Continue Wimbledon Fairytale

http://www.wimbledon.org/images/pics/thumbs/m_sh6.jpg

As fairytales endings go, Maria Sharapova's dismissal of Serena Williams to win her first Wimbledon title last year takes some beating. When 2004 began she was no more than a promising young talent to watch (and with legs that go all the way up to her earlobes, the photographers were watching her more closely than most), but just six months later she was crowned as the queen of SW19.

Sharapova's story was too good to be true. Ten years before her Wimbledon triumph, she had left Russia with her father in search of fame and fortune in the United States. They arrived in their new home with little more than a handful of dollars in their pockets and set about turning young Maria into a champion. Helped along the way by Nick Bollettieri and Robert Lansdorp, who have, between them, trained a goodly number of grand slam champions, Sharapova and her father, Yuri, were determined to make it. But that they made it so quickly has surprised everyone - including Sharapova.

"Sometimes, when I'm sitting at home, I look back at what I was doing two years ago," she said. "It just feels amazing, it really does. When I sit down at the end of the day and go through a magazine with me in it, and I'm with my friends and family, people who have been with me through everything, it's like: we're still doing the same thing. We're still together and we are still doing the things that we were two years ago. But so much has happened."

Such a swift rise to stardom could turn many a young woman's head but not Sharapova. She is made of sterner stuff. She is still a perfectly normal teenager - she loves shopping, gossip and fashion - but she is also a dedicated professional. It has taken a decade of hard graft to get this far and she is not going to waste her opportunities.

Sharapova's competitive nature is terrifying. Early on Martina Hingis noticed something familiar about the new young Russian on the block. "She's as mean as a snake," Hingis said. "She reminds me of me." That refusal to be bested in anything has always been apparent in Sharapova and is something she has learned to live with off court, but it is something she uses to devastating effect on court.

"I've always been a big competitor and I've always been really mentally tough," she said. "I guess that comes with being a competitor, you want to win everything you play, which I know is not possible. If I have to eat a bowl of pasta faster than anyone else, I will. I'm always, always competitive. It's just something that's inside me. It's always been like that."

Robert Lansdorp spotted that champion's instinct when he watched her play - and lose - her first professional match when she was 14. Having worked with Pete Sampras, Lindsay Davenport and Tracy Austin - to name but a few - he could tell the difference between a winner and a player in an instant.

"I saw right there, the way she played: she played without fear," Lansdorp said. "She wasn't good enough that day because she would miss a ball, her shots weren't accurate enough, but she had no fear of hitting it. She would never hold back or be afraid to lose. Every great champion, they have that when they walk on the court: they have no fear. They hate to lose but they are not afraid to lose."

Sharapova is not fond of losing but, despite that, she is philosophical about the nature of her job. When she was beaten 6-0, 6-0 by Davenport in Indian Wells this year, the watching throng was horrified. How could such a thing happen? Sharapova, considerably more mature than her interrogators in the post-match press conference, simply sighed and explained: "I can't win every match". She knew perfectly well that it was not the end of the world and, just to prove her point, she reached the final in Miami two weeks later.

Sharapova has had to learn a lot in the last 12 months. Now that she is a Wimbledon champion - and an extremely attractive one - everyone wants to buy a piece of her. Her bank balance is full to bursting as the sponsors line up to pay her to endorse their products. In return, she must be on call for photo-shoots, television appearances and all manner of publicity activities. And somehow she has to balance all of this with staying at the top of the tennis tree.

"You present yourself as a tennis player but you are also an off-court celebrity," she explained. "You have to combine both. And I know that tennis is obviously my number one priority, and it always will be, but I know that I've also grown off the court and I've grown on the court. It's been a fast but very fun process."

So now she returns to Wimbledon as the defending champion and the star of the show. What happened last year was a fairytale, what happens this year is real life. Now she is the woman to beat and her two weeks in SW19 will be considerably harder this time around. Still, Sharapova is used to the media circus surrounding her and she has fond memories of how she dealt with it last year.

"At Wimbledon I knew that there was a lot going on," she said. "There were a lot of people who were very excited and very shocked at what was happening. But whenever I stepped on the court and whenever I heard 'ready, set, play' I didn't think about anything, I didn't think about who was watching. I was in my own world."

She is back in that world now and she has every intention of staying there.

I'll definately be going to Wimbledon this year. ;)

If you don't want to have to pay for a show court tickets, you could buy a ground pass...they cost £15 and allow you access to every single court except centre court and No.1 court (although there is a standing section for Court.1 that is permittable to people with ground court tickets.)

Of course, being defending champ, its likely Maria will be confined to the show courts, which is a shame. However, ground court tickets allow access to the training courts, and Maria could be training there, if you are lucky. (Last year I saw Daniela Hantuchova and Roger Federer, which was cool.)

Or, Maria could be hanging out in other areas.....Last year I stood next to her when she was standing outside the player lounge. ;)

Its all about luck, really. Or if you wanna try and bag free show court tickets from people who don't need theirs. (I bagged a free one last year, but couldn't get into Maria vs. Daniela because my friend didn't have a show court ticket. :sobbing: )

On grass, Masha should not be afraid of Henin. This lucky bitch can't be lucky forever. She dominates on clay, but on hartcourt and grass, it's a diffrent story :)

Thats is true about last years dress...at least this year your English mates at 'the Sun' wont be able to peak down the front of Marias dress
Its still quite a classy dress and suits Maria well..
Dani has taken Maria's outfit...the one from Birmy...but in a dress version ;)

Serena's loss is not a surprise to me. Venus and Pierce are now more dangerous than Serena. Chances to go in finals are clear for Masha but she must keep up the good form :)

Andy.
Jun 26th, 2005, 05:38 AM
Masha will have to lift her game from now on In each match will get harder and she knows it. If she plays like she did against Sesil she will be hard to beat. But Mary and Venus will be tough if they make the semi finals.

Dude, you guys, I am so sick of people always dismissing Maria's victories. If its not her having the easiest draw that its unfair, its her opponents are injured or they tanked against her. People never give Maria the credit she deserves just because the media loves her. They feel like she gets so much credit from the media that she deserves scorn and contempt from them. I am soooo sick of it. I really hope that Maria plays the toughest opponents from here on out because I believe she will prove the haters all wrong. I hope she beats Venus and then Davenport. I can't wait till she gets a chance to play Davenport or Clijsters, and then she can demolish them and prove once and for all that she is the grass queen.

The key now is for her to keep her serving level up. In fact, she needs to bump it up a notch too. Her serve has been untouchable, only broken once. That's better than the men. But still, she needs to improve it even more for her matches against Lindsay and the others.

Edward.
Jun 28th, 2005, 05:35 PM
Venus will be very tough. She's having a big revival in this tournament and will go into the match with alot of confidence.

Maria needs to start bringing out her best tennis. She did at this point last year and I believe she will do it again. Venus' forehand and second serve can be erratic and Maria needs to be aggressive and take control of the match.

At this stage last year, Maria played Davenport. IMO, Davenport as she was playing then, was a tougher matchup than Venus is now. And Maria beat Lindsay last year. So a new and improved Maria should beat Venus.

franny
Jun 28th, 2005, 07:40 PM

You guys, Maria is in deep trouble right now, but we just have to keep praying and hoping that Maria can pull it off. Never lose faith. If she loses, then Venus thoroughly deserves to win and I hope that all Maria fans can acknowledge that. But as of now, lets just all try to think positive and have positive energy.

Come on guys, let all Maria fans come in and post a positive and encouraging post for Maria. A loss is a loss. She will bounce back. But my worries yesterday came true. I said coming in that she was playing too tentative, too tense, and just not going for her shots. As a result, Venus completely dictated all play and Maria hit so many unforced errors. I'm sad to say it but she's lost a lot of her aggression. I think a lot of it has to do with the pressures of being number 2. I think that if Maria can develop plan B's and like get her aggression back, she can totally win the U.S Open. She'll have no pressure there, hopefully, and can just go for her shots. There's a lot of room for improvement, but she can do it. I believe in her!!! Go Maria I love you!

It was still a good run from Maria. To win Wimbledon at 17 was something amazing, and seeing how close she got in defending her title, I think is just incredible. Ofcourse it would have been a dream come true if she could have won again, but I don't think such feats should be expected from a player who, despite her already impressive records, is just at the beginning of her career. Sure I'm sad, but I'm sad for her, not because she let me down or anything, which has never happened yet (I doubt it ever could). Today she met a player who was in better form than Maria was. Maria had a fairly safe way to the semi's, but never really played amazingly well, where as Venus showed some of her best tennis in a long while.
As I understand, Maria will have a quite long holiday before the hardcourt season, which I hope she uses efficiently. I think she has every chance to do well at the US Open, and even grab the No.1 ranking during this autumn. But if not, I don't think her, or especially any of her fans should rush things up. Considering her young age, IMO her season so far has been very successull and solid. If she keeps working, like I know she will, she'll be lifting that Wimbledon trophy (among others) many times in the future.
Best of Luck in the future Maria! Looking forward to seeing you again soon. :)

I'm really sad about the loss but..
Good point there Teemu.. she is still at the start of her career and she's had an incredible year so far. Her results this year are waaaay better than it was last year. Well, except for this title but mostly everything else she topped last years' result. It would have been really great for her to win Wimby back to back but coming this close to doing so, even though she wasn't at her top form, was good enough. She will definitely come back strong. The USO and the WTA Championship is still there for the taking so who knows.. :)

I think we should be happy about the fact that Maria got to the SF, and who knows, if Venus wins the whole thing she lost to all the GS winners this year so far, could be a lot worse lol

Now we can look forward too another great Wimbledon next year lol

Go Maria !!

erm... Maria could have had this... I mean... how Maria normally plays is like when it was 5-3 Venus serving for the match. This is rather surprising, to see how determined Venus was to have her chance for Wimbledon, and how smartly she played against Maria.

I personally think that Venus did find out the fact that Maria's forehand is just a risky game.... Maria is always going for balls right over the net and a lot ogf times by the lines. Venus finally got it. Venus only had to keep teasing her forehand... not go for the great shots, but keep teasing it by putting some hard shots on her forehand, just keep doing it... This will weaken Maria in the sense that the possibilities of her forehand to go right, go wrong. The worst thing I saw though is Maria actually joining her in these rallies. And as Maria felt the frustation, she felt more the need to just not go for the big points, and this is wrong cause her forehand has been fabricated for years and years to be just a winner maker.

Here is where experience really taught a lesson to Maria. Venus was just trying to play the most perfect game, and be more Justine-like. Venus' footwork was very good, and always returning the shot. Venus was indeed a fighter. Never gave up. Many players would have given up at certain points... well she didn't. What a hell of a fighter.

Matchwise speaking it was mediocre. I personally would have loved to see Maria less in the cage... and have more more tight games. I definetly wanted it to be more tennis than strategy. I think both players can play really raw and exquisite tennis. But Venus knew that playing raw tennis doesn't work... like in NASDAQ-100 earlier this year..

I think this match would have way funner if at the half of the Second set there would have been a Rain Delay.

This is such an annoying result. :fiery:

I am so annoyed that players seem to play the best match of their lives aginst Maria. Against virtually anyone else Masha would have ripped them apart today the way she was playing. But Venus has to choose this precise moment to come good after a 30 month gap! The other semi was played at half this pace.

Defending a slam is hard, but Maria had done so well. I really wanted her to get to the final, even if she lost there. Now it looks like a repeat of 2000. :(

It all hinged on that tiebreak. If Maria could have won that, she would have relaxed and pulled ahead, I think. The pressure would have then transferred to Venus.

I'm looking forward to more Maria-Venus matches. Williams fans always say that the sisters don't like to lose to the same player twice, well, I think that Maria is the same. She had losing streaks against Kuznetsova, Myskina, and a bunch of other girls and she came back and won. In fact, aside from H-H on clay, I don't recall anyone being able to consistently beat Maria. So all I've got to say is, Serena, Venus, Lindsay, Mauresmo, Kim, and Justine, you all better watch yourselves during the summer hardcourt season because not only is Maria a quick learner but she is driven for some revenge!!!!

This year was always going to be tough for Masha. I didnt expect her to win a slam this year i think she will win a lot more in her career but it may take a few more years when she is closer to 20 perhaps like what happened to Serena. Anyhow im proud of her efforts this year she has done very well.

Maria was a few good BH's away from pushing for the 1st set..it was so sad after the comeback she'd mounted
It was unusual to see Maria deflated at the start of the 2nd...no shrieking for the first few games was always a sign of trouble

Thanks to my alarmclock i only got to see the match from 4-1 in the second set.

Hard luck Maria, she had a great couple of weeks and really has done us proud. I believe Maria will get over this fairly quickly and will come out for some sweet revenge on the hardcourts. Remember after the Aussie Open SF loss, Maria came out and claimed Tokyo and Doha in quick succession playing some great tennis.
Hopefully Maria gets some rest, and can enjoy her time offff!

A sad loss- made more irritating by the fact that Venus played awful against Davenport for 1 and a half sets. If she'd played like that against Maria, she would have had a short life in that Semi.

Maria came out in that Semi and played such an intense match - its just that Venus was unbelievable. Maria's performance was nothing to be ashamed of, and I think she has a great chance on the US and Canadian hardcourts.

Hard to say.

Venus was down on her best against Davenport. Davey's choke and injury let her win. It's almost impossible to say how well Venus will play consistently. She says too much play aggravates her stomach injury, and she had a brief come back to form last year on the US hardcourts.

Serena may be remotivated by Venus's win. But she is going to have a hard time giving up all her other activities, acting, fashion, talk-shows etc, to get back 100% to tennis.

Edward.
Jul 2nd, 2005, 08:57 PM
I agree Xan- I thought Venus' victory was down to Lindsay's choke more than anything else. She was serving for the match in the second set, had a MP in the third set, along with several break point chances throughout. And she couldn't pull none of them off.

If Lindsay had Maria's mentality and clinical edge, she would have won in 2 sets.

But credit to Venus.

I really don't agree with you, not so much with this post but with your comments in the GM, saying that this match wasn't good when it really was a great match, Venus won because she fought hard for it, she can't help it (just like Maria in the Masters) that her opponent had a (little) injury or isn't able to finish a match, and Lindsay was able to finish the match !! Venus just didn't let her get that point, there were some amazing points and beautiful winners, you don't get a 9-7 third set with poor tennis

By the way, Maria has lost to all the eventual GS winners so far this year, let's hope that Maria will be the player that will be on fire at the US open !! and NOT again face a player who is playing like her live depends on it, because that is really frustrating, to see players playing their absolute best against Maria !!
