Here is something about the singles match:

No. 4 seed Maria Emelia Salerni lost to Abigail Spears 6-3, 7-5.

The match looked like it was going the way of split sets after Spears went down 3-5 in the second set, but she won the next four games.

“I just decided to give myself a larger margin of error,” said Spears, a 24-year-old American ranked 199th. “I was missing wide a lot, so I gave myself a little room there. I was still going for the lines when I had to, though.”

Here is an article about the match:

Top singles seeds double crowd’s pleasure

Alves-Salerni knock off DuBois-Gallovits in straight sets.

By BILL WOLVERTON, Rockford Register Star

ROCKFORD — Stephanie DuBois, the defending singles champ, and No. 1 seed Edina Gallovits made for an intimidating doubles team Thursday at SwedishAmerican Tennis Classic at the Clock Tower Racquet Club.

Someone forgot to tell that to Maria Fernanda Alves and Maria Emelia Salerni.

Gallovits and DuBois, both singles quarterfinalists, looked downright human losing to Alves-Salerni 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

“They are both great players with different styles,” Alves said. “DuBois plays hard and aggressive from the baseline and Gallovits mixes it up. Together, it’s hard to play them.”

Alves and Salerni are no singles slouches, either.

Alves is ranked 142nd in the world and was a second seed here. Salerni, ranked 147th, was a sixth seed.

Both lost in the first round, while DuBois and Gallovits won second-round matches earlier in the day Thursday.

Gallovits had her serve broken in the first set as Alves-Salerni went up 3-2 and held serve.

DuBois-Gallovits broke Alves’ serve to go up 4-2 in the second set, but Alves-Salerni broke back on Gallovits serve in the next game.

“That was a big game,” Alves said. “If they hold serve, they may get momentum and win the set.”

DuBois-Gallovits took a 4-1 lead in the tiebreaker, but those were the last points they would win.

The crowd in the mezzanine was thinking split sets.

Alves and Salerni were thinking differently.

“You have to think if you can play one good point better on their serve, you can be back,” Alves said. “But we played six points better.”

Salerni held her two serves to make it 4-4, then the pair won both points on DuBois’ serve.

“That was a big comeback,” said Alves, who got the first point by picking off a DuBois forehand at the net and putting it away with a cross-court backhand.

The second point came on a volley exchange between Salerni and Gallovits, who put the fourth volley into the net.

Alves served out the final two points for the match.

“They served well,” Dubois said. “I made two bad forehands (with the 4-1 lead). Maybe that changed the momentum.”

ARGENTINA'S MARIA EMILIA SALERNI WINS AT 18th ANNUAL DOW CORNING TENNIS CLASSIC
Midland Community Tennis Center hosts $75,000 USTA Pro Circuit event thru Feb. 12

MIDLAND, Mich. February 12, 2006 -- Argentina's Maria Emilia Salerni was crowned champion at the 18th annual Dow Corning Tennis Classic.

In a hard faught battle with Russian Vasilisa Bardina, Salerni was able to pull out a victory to win her ninth career singles title and second on the USTA Pro Circuit. She was the 2004 champion at the USTA Pro Circuit event in Ashland, KY. The 141st ranked Salerni defeated Canada's Stephanie Dubois, Australia's Lauren Breadmore, Michaela Pastikova from the Czech Republic, and Russian Olga Poutchkova on her way to the final.

Salerni had an early break in the first set to go up 3-1 and both players refused to let up easily. In a battle of attrition from behind the baseline, each player forced the other to run from side to side. Bardina picked up her game in the second set and went on to win that set when a Salerni forehand sailed long.

The third set proved to be the most intense. After a break of serve to give Salerni a 4-2 lead, Bardina called for a trainer and took a medical time-out. Stiffness in her lower back caused her movement to suffer but she came back to break Salerni's serve and even out the set. Salerni kept Bardina behind the baseline and on matchpoint Bardina sent a forehand into the net to give Salerni the win, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

In a high caliber doubles final, No. 4 seeds Milagros Sequera and Meilen Tu were pushed to the limit by Maria Jose Argeri and Leticia Sobral. After splitting the first two sets, Sequera and Tu went on to win the match in the third set, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.

The Dow Corning USTA Championships features 32 singles players and a 16-team doubles field. The tournament is held at the Midland Community Tennis Center, 900 East Wackerly, in Midland, Mich.

Salerni beats Bardina to win Dow Corning Tennis Classic :)

Two months ago, Maria Emilia Salerni teamed up with a new tennis coach. The change paid off in a big way.

Salerni added her name to the list of Dow Corning Tennis Classic champions thanks to a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Russia's Vasilisa Bardina in Sunday's singles final at the Midland Community Tennis Center.

Salerni switched coaches back in December. She's now working with fellow Argentine Rafael Serpa, who was in attendance Sunday wearing an Argentina soccer jersey.

"He made me play simple," Salerni said. "Before, I had so many different ways to play. He gave me back my tennis and my confidence. That's why I have to thank him. It's really simple."

Salerni earned $11,400 for her first tournament title on the USTA Circuit since winning an event in Ashland, Ky. in September 2004.

Salerni's career has also been plagued with injuries. She missed a good part of the 2004 season after undergoing elbow surgery. She then suffered a stress fracture in her foot and missed the first part of the 2005 season.

"I've had a lot of injuries, but I'm healthy right now," she said. "I'm enjoying playing healthy again."

As for Bardina, it marked her first time in the final of a $75,000 event. She won four matches in four days but couldn't pull out a fifth victory. She takes home $6,080.

"(Saturday) I played very well against (Jamea) Jackson," Bardina said. "I think it was one of my toughest matches this week. Today I was very tired. Playing five matches was very difficult.

"I thought I played well. I'm happy to play in the final. It was a nice week here. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. You just need to play."

Salerni gained the upper hand in the opening set. She broke Bardina in the fourth game to gain a 3-1 lead. Bardina had a break point in the next game, but lost the next three points to fall behind 4-1.

Salerni continued to put the pressure on. She won four straight points on Bardina's serve to extend the lead to 5-1.

Bardina managed to get one service break back moments later and then held to make it 5-3. She then had three chances to break Salerni to get the set back on serve. But Salerni fought off all three points and won the set when Bardina sent a shot from the backhand side long.

"I knew how to play against her," Salerni said. "I knew that I had to keep going the whole match, because I made her run a lot. I knew that she was going to get tired."

Early in the second set, Bardina had to do some scrambling to hold serve. Salerni had two break points on Bardina's first service game and a break point on her second. But each time, Bardina came up with a much-needed point.

After holding serve in the third game, Bardina broke Salerni in the fourth. But Salerni came right back to break Bardina and cut her lead to 3-2. But the momentum didn't last long, as Bardina broke again to make it 4-2.

Salerni was unable to get the break back, and Bardina won the second set 6-3.

The third set looked like it might be quick. Salerni held serve twice and broke Bardina to take a 3-0 lead. But Bardina, who was one point away from falling behind 4-0, fought off a break point and held to make it 3-1.

After Salerni held to take a 4-1 lead, Bardina stormed back to win the next three games to even the set.

After the sixth game, Bardina called for the trainer to come courtside and work on her lower back.

The injury didn't seem to affect Bardina. After the short delay, she kept running around flagging down just about every tough shot thrown her way.

But after Bardina tied the set, Salerni held serve to take a 5-4 lead and put the pressure on Bardina. Salerni broke her serve, clinching the match when Bardina dumped a forehand into the net.

"In the first set, it was very difficult to understand how she played," Bardina said. "In the second set, I didn't think about winning or losing. I just played like I can play. In the third set, I started to get tired."

Both players will take a short rest before resuming their seasons. Bardina will take a week off and then play in a $175,000 WTA event in Memphis, Tenn. at the end of the month. Salerni will take two weeks off. She'll play in a $2.1 million event in Indian Wells, Calif. in early March.

Maria Emilia is playing the Qualies in Montreal, Canada (Tier I) this week, and she will face No.22 seed Lilia Osterloh. Pitu has a good H2H against her, but in the last meeting the winner was Lilia. I hope Pitu can make it and qualify! :bounce:

I've found some news about Pitu. She will miss the US OPEN due to a stress fracture in her right foot. At least three weeks without playing.
Here`s the link: http://www.clarin.com/diario/2006/08/19/deportes/d-08203.htm

Salerni, sin US Open

María Emilia Salerni se perderá el Abierto de Estados Unidos, que comenzará el 28 en Flushing Meadows, debido a una fractura por stress en el pie derecho. La rafaelina deberá estar inactiva, al menos, por tres semanas.

The thing is that she plays too much in my oppinion.
Recover quickly pitu!!! Hope you make a great comeback!!!
