The funny thing is Justine hasnt played well, at all (if you compare her form to 2003/2002) in the last couple of weeks. She lost a set and played like crap against an injured Davenport, missed loads of sitters to grind out a win over Ana in the semi's. Grit and determination has really got her through, imo.

meh, Svetlana really crumbled in the end. She saved a match point with a good serve but really wasnt firing on the important points. She made a double at a crucial stage when serving to stay in the match, but I think that was partly down to Justine really beginning to attack the second serve. Both could have played better, but Justine was by no means terrible.

justine&coria
May 1st, 2005, 01:50 PM
Wrong. Maria or Serena would get that honor.
Why Maria ? Has she ever been close to lose a match and then won it ? And come on : Justine and Serena would never let themselves be double-bageled by someone. Sharapova is still young though. In some years, she might become one of the best fighters on the tour. But right now, she isn't.

Serena and Justine are the greatest fighters on the tour.
But how can we know who is the greater between those 2 ? Why is it worth making a ranking of the greatest fighters ? We simply can't know : was Justine ever in the exactly same situation as Serena ? or the opposite ? No.

Justine and Serena are the best fighters on the tour. That's it.

Thanks:kiss:

I knew both Justine and Kim were up and comers when they both played Jennifer at the Slams in 2001. One won (Justine, 2001 Wimbledon SF) and the other lost (Kim, 2001 FO final), but playeld very well. I also knew Jusitne would be a threat on grass when she took a set off of Venus at the 2001 Wimbledon final. I also believe that Justine will win Wimbledon someday, maybe this year, but she must work on her serve if she meets either Venus, Serena or Maria en route to the championship becuase they are my early favorites to win.

Well, it's good to see hard-working people winning tournaments again.

Justine's form will get better and she's sure to be motivated by her results so far. Kim will improve also and the tour will almost be back to normal. I'm just waiting to see when Venus and Serena Williams decide to take their asses off another red carpet and actually show up to play. What's the story with Jennifer, tho? Will she be back in time to play the FO?

Congratulations, Justine. Unfortunately for Sveta one time she's hitting the greatest shots and the next she's making the dumbest unforced errors, but its good to see her results improve since recent times.

well you can't win a final with 52 unforced errors :( what a shame

the key-point was the backhand sveta missed at 4-4 *0-30 in the third, having wrongfooted justine  it would have given her 3 BPs  at least she reached a final after Shanghai

congrats to Justine for her never-give-up attitude

yes,im exactly of the same opinion as you!!i like the hard working people most of all too, because you can identify with your own "hard-work"life!!and this comment fits absolutely to justine and sveta!i like them both, but sveta a wee bit more, because shes very natural, and it would have been great for her,to get her first tournament of the year under her belt!!but, full congrats and respect to justine!!

This week has definitely been a step in the right direction though in terms of this year. The forehand was looking good, the second serve let her down badly at times though.

Kim lost to Venus in Antwerp so she has lost to an American.

Maybe she thinks Venus is some alien  meanwhile good for JHH. Too bad Kuzzie, a bridesmaid at this tourney for the 2nd year in a row :p

Another strong fighting spirit showing from Justine!!! :yeah:

Her game probably still not back to the old great form, but her strong fighting ability is definitely still there!!! :worship:

That's just unbelievable!!! Her come back result is almost a carbon copy of Kim's.....
QF... and 2 titles in a row!!!!!!

With the difference that both Miami and Indian Wells won by Kim are Tier I events and the biggest tournies after the Grand Slams, Miami beeing the 5th and Indian Wells the 6th biggest WTA-tourney in the World.

 Justine ...

Some wonderful shots & horrible errors from both girls, but overall VERY enjoyable match. Sveta's really tough to beat when her really forehand's on, like it was in the first set ... I'd say she's a serious threat at RG. Hope Justine will not meet her there, since she'll be flying high on motivation to get revenge (like she did in Dubai & Doha 2003) ...

Kuznetsova's problem seems to be consistency. She lacks a lot of it, so we don't really know if she'll be playing to her potential at Roland Garros. If she is, I would say she is a threat. But if Justine meets her there, Justine is likely to win again, I think.

And don't you mean Dubai and Doha 2004? Justine still won Dubai and went down in a tough match in Doha. ;) :p

Don't worry, she'll measure up [and likely to surpass] after RG.

Who said I am worrying. Taking in consideration that neither Masha nor Serena was there, I am not worrying at all.

You're right. Justine has only 1 loss this year, while clijsters has 2 losses. HUGE DIFFERENCES!

I saw that match and Kutz had jhh on the ropes until the injury. If that injury had not occur jhh would have been toast.

Is that why the injury timeout was at 6-2, 1-4 - Svetlana went on to build a 4-2 lead in the decider.

To say that the injury caused the loss is ridiculous - it didnt seem to hinder her movement, the strapping seemed to be precautionary.

Justine was outhit for large parts of the match but played the crunch points better...so she won.

Henin-Hardenne Wins Warsaw

Justine Henin-Hardenne continues to clean up on clay. The 2003 Roland Garros champion claimed her second consecutive clay-court championship with today’s 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory over second-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova in the J&S Cup final in Warsaw.

Collecting the 21st championship of her career, Henin-Hardenne is tied with Hall of Famer Pam Shriver for 20th place on the all-time title list. She became the 15th woman in history to surpass $8 million in career prize money.

Fighting back from a 1-3 deficit in the decisive set, Henin-Hardenne beat Kuznetsova for the sixth time in seven matches.

"It was a great battle at the end of the match," Henin-Hardenne said. "In the third set we saw a good match, a good fight. Now I have a couple of matches on clay, and that gives me a lot of confidence before the French Open."

It was the 11th straight victory for the former No. 1, who was won two of the three tournaments she’s entered this season. The unseeded Belgian beat second-seeded Russian Elena Dementieva, 7-5, 6-4, in the Charleston final on April 17th.

In a battle of the current and former U.S. Open champions, Kuznetsova collected the first set with aggressive shots from the baseline. Kuznetsova, who snapped Kim Clijsters’ 17 match winning streak with Saturday’s 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory, was one set from terminating Henin-Hardenne’s streak, but the Belgian lifted her level in the second set. Trailing 1-4, Kuznetsova took an injury timeout to get her left thigh taped. Kuznetsova conceded the combination of her leg injury and Henin-Hardenne’s consistent play was too much to overcome.

"I’d like to know how it happened, that I lost it," Kuznetsova said. "The match could have gone so many ways. The first set was the best I ever played in this tournament, just unbelievable. I was running down all the balls and serving well. But at the end of the set I pulled my leg and I wasn't moving so well in the second."

Henin-Hardenne, whose ranking is projected to rise to No. 15 when the new WTA Tour rankings are released tomorrow, and compatriot Clijsters have emerged as two of the top contenders for Roland Garros, which begins on May 23rd.

"I think I can still do better, and that's what I have to be focused on," Henin-Hardenne said. "I have to be aggressive so I don't have long rallies like I did today."
