lol jeez of course....had to bring Serena into this, i swear it could be a thread about plants and people would bring Serena into it.

It just seems odd because its not really a very dramatic match, and she is saying it on very casual normal errors.

justine was overdoing the "allez" today against Ivanovic. On very ordinary points, justine would shout out "allez" when winning them, as well as pump her fist.

it's a natural response after a great shot or a really tough point, but not on tin pan alley unforced errors from the opponent.

Actually, weren't they talking during the break between the 2nd and 3rd sets at AO 2002?? I wish Capriati was that nice to the Williams girls. But I agree I like both Capriati and Hingis, that AO 2002 final was so sad though, I really think that brought and end to Hingis' career.

yeah. Hingis was crying on Jenn. She was so "heat stroked". But at least, the rules have been changed now and at a certain high temperature, games can be suspended. This is afterall a game and not a "death chamber"

The allez thing irritates the fuck out of me. I can understand the occasional outburst after a nice winner, but to do it constantly after UEs irks me.

I said the same about Serena (after the Els Callens match at Wimbledon, for example) and Maria (after beating Serena at the YEC, for example). But, Justine seems to do it more than any other player.

To each his own, I guess. But, personally, that is just one of the reasons that I don't like her.

Wannabeknowitall
May 1st, 2005, 02:52 AM
She's not as comfident in herself as she was before so she needs a little more of that vocal belief to urge her on. Her route to the top 10 after Rome is full of people who did not take advantage of the opportunities they had against Justine. Alicia Molik, Peng, Jelena Jankovic to name a few. She hasn't played her best and she knows it. She's overcompensating a little with the Allez. The players on the tour shouldn't get distracted by it. If they are then there is a problem with focusing on the big thing. Beating Justine-Henin Hardenne. I don't mind it though. Not yet.

Problem is players react to it. Sveta today got annoyed at a loud allez shout when she missed and then promptly gave up the key break in the second set with her next two points. Understandable as "allez" in that context means the same as shouting "you're rubbish". Monica grunted but she did it all the time. Serena screams but she does it on key points. Continual "allez" coming over the net at you every time you miss is a new phenomena.

Don't know what you do about it though as you can't easily write a rule to define intimidation or interruption or disturbance. I suspect the USO crowd will be on her heavily if she does it against a US player or, given the British love for the French, something will happen at Wimbledon.

dunno where you get that from. does fistpumping by other players on an error also constitute implying that the opponent is rubbish? maybe I'm blinded, being a fan and all but to me it shows she's happy the ball went out...yes I don't think it's always a cordial thing to do but she's hardly making fun of her opponent.

actually she's always 'allez'ed both her own winners and her opponents' errors. this isn't new, nor is it novel in tennis...the frequency's been upped is all :p

That was what happened in the match. If your opponent has just hit an UE on a point that isn't yet decisive for the game let alone the match (which is when Justine used to say allez), its difficult to see what "allez" could mean other than pointing out it was a bad shot to either the opponent or yourself. As it either means or implies your opponent is playing badly enough for you to win, its not surprising other players react to it. Even if you didn't mean anything negative it will inevitably be understood that way by other players. Thats why players don't do it.

As you say the rules are pretty undefinable. Unsportsmanlike behaviour would catch it but is even more undefinable and unenforceable. If "Allezing" your opponents UE is allowable though, what words would you disallow after they miss a point? Replace "allez" with any of the words that the opposing player might read into it, correctly or not, like "Chicken", "jerk" "hopeless", "pathetic" or even "wow" ,"oh dear", "bad miss", "got you" or "yes!"....and you will have Irina v Venus and Patty v Conchita fights all over the place....

I have no problem with the rest of your post if you feel shouting out 'allez' may piss off other players, I fully respect your opinion. However the last point you tried to make is really way off the mark. I think I can safely say I'm speaking for 90% of Belgian French speakers pointing out that French being your mother tongue doesn't make a French person out of you. This is as dumb as implying that any native English speaker should be called an American rather than a British person or an Australian or a Canadian, etc...
French is a language spoken in Blegium, Switzerland, Vuanutu, Canada and many African countries. So I guess that British people (if they are knowledgeable in geography that is) will never consider Justine (or Gagliardi and Mikaelian for that matter) as a French person.

Even though she is one of my favourites, Maria is at the top of the list when it comes to screaming after opponent's mistakes. Justine and Kim are going up in that list especially after their latest comebacks. Kim's fistpumps are also famous. isn't annoying unless; well you find her irksome anyway. I've heard
uglier sounds and the odd "F**K you!" and "BITCH" and down right
grunting or screams directly at opponents in their faces at the net.

If she didn't win some of the anti-allez critics wouldn't have even noticed.
Alot of Americans have never seemed to like the sound of "allez" because
it's too foreign to begin with so, it's not surprising that they aren't too
please with it. JHH's voice isn't even that loud; it sounds like kid's voice.

Why do people always bring Serena into stuff?? Serena does yell come on in tight matches, but so do a lot of players.

Because most stupid threads about Justine have been posted by Williams fans

And if they somehow manage to utter a sound they should get an electric shock.

Poor Maria.

Well allez is so much less irritating than "Come on". And it's not like she's murdered anyone.

@fammmmedspin: If someone shouts "Come on" when I makes an unforced error, I don't take it to mean I suck. I take it to mean that's that's they are so happy and desperate to win a point that they will take any opportunity to belch out a "Come on". Which means I'm seriously outclassing them.

It's all about positive thinking, I guess.

ALLEZ, Justine!!!!!!

Catty Patty is in the twilight of her career. It appears all she has is bitterness for her opponents. That chip on her shoulder is larger than the diameter of a tennis racquet. Patty, its not "Allez's" fault you lost. Stop with the whining and the indefensible excuses!!!!

it's not patty's fault justine is annoying everyone she plays.

you're a 37 year old who is obsessed with an 18 year old girl so i wouldn't be going around judging other people.

There are players more annoying than her when screaming,!
At least she doesn’t scream ‘come on’ like all players; she has her own way to encourage herself,

Maria annoys me more when screaming but she can’t put her hands in front of the mouth to avoid shouting.

& what about Hewitt, he screams ‘come on’ every balls! But I think players get used to, & don’t pay attention to it anymore.

I dunno, I've seen a lot of players shout things like "come on" or of course "allez" after just about every point, but if that's what it takes to win then more power to them I guess!

In justine's case it seems to be doing her quite well!

In this case, because the person posting negative things about Justine is someone named "venus+Serena #1 fan", a Serena fan saying bad things about Justine, when Serena does the same thing or worse, no surprise!.

I counted - during the J&S Cup final she screamed "allez" 11 times after Svetlana's UFE. I didn't like it.

:worship: . Exactly.
She's not the only player 'guilty' of pumping herself up. and there's nothing wrong with it regardless of who does it.

That's not too bad. So it's only on 20% of Sveta's errors. :o

Well even Eurosport commentators found it annoying !!

However it's still very far from one player who shout "f*ck y*u" at her opponent.

Hint: AO'03 first round and I'm not talking about french girl...

The "allez" has really pissed me off this week because its all the time and its worse than serena or maria grunting because she does it when opponents make mistakes and its just rude and very bad sportsmanship.
