Confusion surrounds Alicia Molik's European claycourt aspirations amid fears an inner-ear infection could force the world number 8 out if the French Open.

Molik has not been able to practice at all since withdrawing from Charleston three weeks ago because of balance problems. The South Australian has returned to her Melbourne home, bypassing the German Open in Berlin.

While the right-hander conceded yesterday "anything was possible" when asked if she might mss the French Open, it is understood that Molik is still contemplating a start in the Italian Open in Rome from May 9.

Molik has consulted a physiotherapist and will have further discussions with her coach David Taylor and manager Lisa Chaffey, of Octagon, before mapping out definite plans.

The illness has robbed Molik of the chance to forge deeper into the top 5.

Fed Cup captain John Alexander predicts Molik can reach the sports summit - No.1 - with strong showings in the French Open and Wimbledon.

Molik has relatively few rankings points to defend until after Wimbledon, but she will then come under siege late in the season.

Alexander expects Molik will commit to Australia's next Fed Cup tie after it's unsuccessful bid for promotion in India last week.

Alicia!!! :bigcry: :sobbing:

Clay was your big chance to leap up the rankings with very little to defend...

Can't believe JA is still touting her as #1 material, talk about putting undue pressure on her. Would that even be possible? I don't think it would unless she won Wimbledon and the US Open or something O_o

Please get better soon Alicia!!! She hasn't won a match since beating Gisela Dulko in 3 sets at Miami :sobbing:  :tears:

This blows, just when the belgians are back and competition starts hotting up, this happens. Hopefully it won't be too serious. remember when justine was out with what looked like a simple flu, she was gone forever!

She'll pick up points at US Open and Wimbledon anyway... she should definately make the quarters at flushing but it's a shame with Dementieva and Myskina just above her and defending so many points she hasn't been able to move her way up the rankings.

It's not like she's defending a lot as it is. That's not really a positive.

She still has those points from Vienna to defend. It shouldn't move her ranking around much without them though.

Anti-biotics don't work against viral infections. Inner ear infections totally wreck your balance.

erm, what about bacterial and fungal labyrinthitis?
sure viral labyrinthitis predominates. but it ain't the only show in town.

I had a friend who had to be hospitalized due to a severe viral inner ear infection. It took him MONTHS, and yes, a LOT of physical therapy, to start to feel near normal again. I sure hope Alicia's problem will be more easily resolved than his.

Anti-biotics will be useful in such cases. Sometimes it takes a course or two of different types or cure it, and it still could take a few weeks.
