I'm a subscriber to ESPN the Magazine, and in this issue he sat down with Maria. I love Dan Patrick's page - the outtakes are always a laugh. Enjoy!

*DP= Dan Patrick
*MS= Maria Sharapova

DP - Who's the greatest female tennis player of all time?
MS - I'll tell you in a few years.
DP - Good answer. Give me the male tennis player you'd like to face.
MS - There are a few who I would equally want to kick their ass, but first is Roddick. I would love to return that serve of his. I just want to show him that, you know, his serve is not that good after all.

DP - Better tennis outfits - you or Serena?
MS - Me, come on! Mine are more classy and more elegant.
DP - Outfit that Serena has worn that you just couldn't see yourself in?
MS - All of them. <---

DP - Ever eaten off the silver plate you won at Wimbledon?
MS - No, because you don't actually get the big silver tray. I got a smaller version.
DP - Those bastards. They didn't give you the bigger one?
MS - No, I got a little replica. It's just too small - I eat too much.

DP - Any difference between European and American tennis fans?
MS - American fans really like it when you hit the line or close to the line. They like to scream, "Yeah! Ooh! In, come on, in!" because the harder the ace, the better for them. They like controversy. For the Europeans, they like it when you show your game, and you don't hit aces all the time. It becomes too boring for them.

DP - Biggest purchase you've ever put on your credit card?
MS - I spend more money on shoes than anything else.
DP - Most you've ever spent on a pair?
MS - A thousand dollars.
DP - That's not bad.
MS - For a pair of shoes? It's just a piece of material and a heel!
DP - You get your tennis shoes for free. You can spend all your money on dress shoes.
MS - Well, that's my excuse, you know.

DP - TV Show that you'd like to appear on - and are you a good girl or a bad girl on it?
MS - The OC. I'd have more fun playing a bad girl. Or 24, because I could be a spy criminal.
DP - You could speak Russian to Kiefer Sutherland!

DP - Favorite movie?
MS - My all-time favorite is Something's Gotta Give, with Jack Nicholson. I love to laugh, and that was really, really funny.
DP - When's the last time you cried at a movie?
MS - I cried at The Notebook.
DP - But that's a chick flick, Maria.
MS - Well, I'm a chick. What do you expect?

She's definitely got chutzpah. I'm surprised that the Sharapova team allowed her to answer the Serena question. Usually a manager or somesuch would have forced a strike of that.

I wonder if Serena will fire back? Somehow, I doubt it.

To be fair, even though Maria Sharapova is my all time favorite tennis player, she needs to pull back on her IMG confidence tainting her interviews because some will see her comments as arrogance. I am hoping because Maria is so young she will grow of out this full of herself stage she seems to be in and return to being the nice girl that I believe is in there but is smothered by the IMG hype she has grown up with. Some of her comments seemed playful to a certain degree. But Masha has always been so professional and bland in her interviews about tennis and her life. Up until now. But arrogant interviews like this one with the ever annoying Dan Patrick talking about bullsh!t topics like shoes will only turn people off to her. Maria Sharapova is the girl who thought of wearing a black ribbon in tribute to the Beslan, Russia school terror victims last year during the U.S. Open. That was a very nice gesture on her part. And the other Russina's followed suit. Masha has the ability to think and be heard in a good way. But fluff pieces like this ESPN artice do her and her image absolutely no good in my opinion. :(

P.S. - I understand that the "ESPN The Magazine" insterview segments with Dan Patrick are supposed to be laughfests and all about the athlete. But Maria didn't come across well in this interview and I wish someone like her mother, father or agent would explain this to her. Yes I think Masha is stylish and has class. :) But it certainly didn't come across in this interview.

Maria doesn't have to like what Serena wears. But couldn't she have come up with a better way to react to this question? Classy, elegance she associates with her style so what then does she think of Serena really? That was the bit that wasn't necessary and it wasn't funny either. she has been rude to serena ever since wimbledon 04'

Oh, poor Serena, how will she ever cope with teenagers being rude to her? I suspect she knows just how it feels, having once been a teenager herself who showed her illustrious senior opponents no respect either.

Seriously, the most shocking thing about this interview is that Maria Sharapova showed some traces of an entertaining personality

I'm not questioning Serena's behaviour. I think it's a lot of fun when brash new teenagers refuse to show proven champions respect. Serena did it, now Maria's doing it. I'm not criticising either. It's amusing that Serena is dealing with what she once dealt out, but in six years' time so will Maria.

The point is that Sharapova's IMG-personality is extremely boring and bland, and she's always careful to toe the line and say the right thing. This isn't in keeping with that at all.

Wait, so this makes what Maria said either okay, or lighthearted? Gosh, then the next time Serena is quoted to saying something like she doesn't think of Maria then I guess that will be okay and lighthearted as well. Serena's words when she stated she wasn't at Wimbledon didn't have a direct hit at Maria. Serena was beaten and that was a fact, it's not like she's taking the win away from Maria. Going at Serena and directly stating her choice in style is not classy or elegant like Maria's is tacky. And if you can only defend Maria by bringing up an unequal comparison with Serena's own words then it does show your admission that Maria erred.

Maria was asked directly about Serena's dresses, and which she thought were better, hers or Serena's. She had to answer, and then said she thought her tennis wear was more elegant and classy. Maybe a slip of what she really thought in an informal interview. But hardly a pre-meditated slight.

What's wrong with simply saying Serena has her style that works for her, but I like mine better  What is so bad in saying something like that as opposed to stating someone's style lacks class and elegance? Somehow that is better. Okie dokie. Obviously Mr. Patrick's column was wanting the type of answer Maria provided and she didn't disappoint. Good for her.

Again, does that make Maria's statements any less worse? Serena's statements could be disrespectful in their own right as could Maria's. I'm not into waging a war of whose words are worse just to find which player looks less worse off.

When asked a question it usually is direct. I can't see Maria taking the fifth on whose dress is better, but again, tact works in most cases and while she claims her style has it, she showed none of the class and elegance she's so proud of. Maria simply chose to answer the set of questions in that manner. Through this thread we've seen some found her words funny and lighthearted, others negated it with Serena's words in the past and some found it lacking in humor. Different viewpoints and not much agreement. That is life.

At least Serena has like three different ones at a time, and they all are headline grabers as well as very high fashion and inventive things to wear on a tennis court. Maria, you're too afraid to wear something daring. Unless you can pull of a major fashion statement on court, then SHUT UP!!

What Maria said about Serena's outfits is totally inappropriate. She doesn't realize that the only reason why she's wearing the pink dress is because Serena designed a pink dress for HERSELF.

Yeah not to mention that Nike allows Serena to design her own outfits, unlike you, Maria, wearing normal tennis outfits!!

I am really laughing at the hysteria and hypocrisy of some of these Williams fans/Maria haters. Working themselves up into a foaming at the mouth bout of self-righteousness about one aside comment!

If Serena was a queen of tact, praise and consideration for other players, I could possibly see some small trace of credibility in such a reaction. but Serena is a serial disser and disregarder of her opponents.

With respect to this, if this is the only way to defend Maria's words and make it okay, it only points to an admission that they are in fact bad and without tact. Shouldn't Maria be able to be judged simply on her own standing without having to stand on someone else as a measure of good, bad? This was about Maria's words on Serena, not the other way around.

Some people only see what they want to see, others take the time to learn more about a player rather than forming an opinion of them from the odd article posted in the GM (at times written with the intent to hype up a rivallry that exists by itself on court)

This is too precious. Serena was followed and known before her outfits with Nike, so no, she doesn't have to wear anything in any way to be a headliner. She already was one to begin with. Her daring quality about her clothes just added another aspect to 'Serena' that the media continues to love and follow. One thing we have found out is that Serena doesn't have to talk negativly about another player. Does modesty cover that too for Maria

Bad behavior is just that bad behavior and we should be able to point it out no matter who the culprit is. We shouldn't be excusing it by saying it was only a joke, or the interpretation is wrong, or the culprit is too young. We also shouldn't be comparing mistakes either like there are varying degrees of mistakes and some are acceptable depending on who makes it. Maria made a mistake in her interview, she should not have taken a direct swipe at Serena. There are more diplomatic ways to answer that question.

If I try to explain to the regular public in America who is number one, they've never heard of her. So I just say, 'It's me! It's me!' Why not?"

why does she need to 'explain to people' who is number one? why not just tell them? it was justine at the time, and it's lindsay now. i fail to see where an explanation is necessary unless someone asks "why aren't YOU number one?"

Maria has been bratty on ocassion, like Serena has, but she has never addressed an opponent directly, also like Serena has never. This rudeness seems out of character. and i only brought that one quote up for people who tried to put maria at some standard by saying "serena has never belittled an opponent."

If Maria actually said that ( and it's a big if), then that would make her the dumbest thing on tour. Does she not realize that her comments don't just pertain to Serena, but to Nike ( Maria's clothing sponser too) as well? When you're sponsered by a company, you don't diss any of their products publically. Whether you are wearing them or not.

I never thought of that, but if so it's a TERRIFIC thing to hear. I'm sick of everyone on the tour kowtowing to their corporate overlords.

I'd rather have a player who makes snide comments about these companies even if it means forgoing extra dollars than someone who acts like Nike or Adidas are the best things ever.

I'm even more surprised that Maria said it now, as she's probably the most corporate player of them all.

Diplomatic Maria - The Other Interview

*DP= Dan Patrick
*MS= Maria Sharapova

DP - Who's the greatest female tennis player of all time?
MS - There are many great players, but I'm not going to give names.
DP - Good answer. Give me the male tennis player you'd like to face.
MS - The men are too good for us WTA players. I wouldn't want to play any of them.

DP - Better tennis outfits - you or Serena?
MS - We both have great outfits.
DP - Outfit that Serena has worn that you just couldn't see yourself in?
MS - She's great outfits, but I wouldn't wear them.

DP - Ever eaten off the silver plate you won at Wimbledon?
MS - No. You don't actually get the big plate.
DP - Those bastards. They didn't give you the bigger one?
MS - No.

DP - Any difference between European and American tennis fans?
MS - They are supportive in different ways.

DP - Biggest purchase you've ever put on your credit card?
MS - I spend more money on shoes than anything else.
DP - Most you've ever spent on a pair?
MS - A thousand dollars.
DP - That's not bad.
MS - Yes
DP - You get your tennis shoes for free. You can spend all your money on dress shoes.
MS - Well, that's my excuse, you know.

DP - TV Show that you'd like to appear on - and are you a good girl or a bad girl on it?
MS - The OC. Or 24.

MS - Ok.

That would give Maria as much personality as a sack of potatoes. Which of course offers her haters fodder to hate on her (albeit a different kind). Still she couldn't have been more diplomatic :p

Moral: When you're winning, nothing you say can please anyone but your fanbase.

But it certainly didn't come across in this interview.
P.S. - As one of a handful Masha's longt-time biggest fans, I think you should just take it or leave it and shouldn't expect Masha to talk or to be the way you wish or the way you think is right.

Masha is a confident girl, so I think she does know what she was talking about.

Though you're one of the decent Sharapova posters, I must disagree. Because when has Sharapova said anything nice about Serena? Everything is always negative, or just plain rude. And this is just another example. But one thing I've noticed, is that Serena is really the only player she talks bad about. She even had some nice things to say about Venus in Miami. So I don't know what the deal is with Serena.

thanx !! But you see what I don't get, what was so rude of Maria ?? I mean, It was her oppinion, or did you just not like the way she said it ?? because I think it's obvious that you like your own clothes more then the clothes from someone else, and I can't remember Maria ever saying something bad about Serena's game, correct me if I'm wrong, I just think that she said it with a bit of fun, like of course I'm not saying that she looks better duh !! guess that was not funny at all from her lol

99.9% of the wta seem to have no personality anyway. and for the most part her interviews are dry as fuck. like most players. i guess IMG programmed asked her to spice them up a bit. i agree though, a bit of diplomacy wouldn't go a miss. i wouldnt have ever said that about anyone, there's nothing "boring" about avoiding the bait.

no she didn't, she just said hers have more class and more elegance. doesn't mean serena's aren't gorgeous, trendy, cool, amazing.

she likes hers better, what's wrong with that?

don't tell me this is the first time you've heard that serena's outfits are less than classy and not too elegant. we've heard these things 100 times, and serena's addressed it before anyway, she doesn't mind that she doesn't look elegant out there.

She said it very matter of factly like any fool on the street would look at her and then look at Serena and most definitely think all her outfits are classier and more elegant than Serena's.

I agree actually.

I'm sure it was not meant with malice or anything, and the interview was very light hearted.

I would have liked to see her show a little more respect, and I do find some of it really quite arrogant, but hey, nobody's perfect, and I think she's generally not like this at all, unless she's just being light hearted + jokey.

Maria's fans have always known that she has a good sense of humor when others were saying that she is just a robot programmed by IMG. She said it very matter of factly like any fool on the street would look at her and then look at Serena and most definitely think all her outfits are classier and more elegant than Serena's.
you KNOW she said it matter of factly and with a stone cold face? so you were there now?!?

and if any fool on the street took a look at what both of these women wore to the US OPEN last year, they would have picked maria's outfit as more classy and elegant. boots, leather, jeans out on court? it's "cool" but maria's more classic attire would be deemed more classy and elegant by ANYONE.

Don't be mad at her because she speaks the truth!

Serena's outfits are a series of fashion disasters. Everytime I think I've seen the worst it can get..... it gets worse. :rolls:

That's one instance. I said EVERY time. I didn't say she said it stone cold faced, there were exclamation points which lead me to believe otherwise, that doesn't mean she wasn't serious.

I don't think I've read one interview of Maria's that I thought was funny. She is exciting to watch on the tennis court, but has the personality of a sleeping sloth.

Ahhhh... equating Maria to an animal.

In the past when journalists have refered to Serena as a "tigress" etc., fans here have been incensed and claimed it was racisim.

So... it really is a "no win" situation. Maria has a funny interview with a lot of quips, and it's tear her down for being tactless, but otherwise, she's a sleeping sloth. :rolls:

Fact is - everything in that interview is done with humor, tongue in cheek, jokingly; IT WAS NOT SAID SERIOUSLY and I know Maria would not say anything that rude if she were not kidding around which she likes to do in spite of the "robot" image some seem to have of her.

Everyone around here is judged too harshly in my opinion. We want players to speak their minds and say things spontaneously and yet we jump all over them when they're obviously just joking? And yes, this goes for everybody, and just because someone is criticised unfairly doesn't mean it's ok to be unfair to someone else!

bandabou

If Maria actually said that ( and it's a big if), then that would make her the dumbest thing on tour. Does she not realize that her comments don't just pertain to Serena, but to Nike ( Maria's clothing sponser too) as well? When you're sponsered by a company, you don't diss any of their products publically. Whether you are wearing them or not.

hhmmmmmmm. good point. never thought of it that way!

I can't for the "she's only 18 comments" to come up!

She said she couldn't see herself in any of Serena's outfits. What's the problem? I'm not that much of a Maria fan, but geez...get over it. What was she supposed to say? "Yeah, I could really see myself in the catsuit...and the denim jean skirt with the hooker boots. That's hot." Some people like Serena's outfit and some people don't. That's life.

This was actually a great interview though. I don't think we really have any idea of what Maria is like as a person because her media team is so quick to make sure she says the right thing and avoids anything remotely controversial at all costs. The entire interview shows she's got a surprisingly good sense of humor. I wish they'd allow her to show it a bit more.

I'm not talking about the skirt. I'm talking about the boots. And they are sort of hooker-ish.

There was some article during the US Open last year in one of the major newspapers (I forget which, but it might have been the NY Times) where a reporter basically walked around downtown Manhattan wearing Serena's outfit. She then asked people passing by who she was. Literally half of the people who passed by thought she was a dominatrix. That says something.

OMG! What do you guys expect? She is kid and given her accomplishments and the spotlight on her, I do expect her to be a bit of a diva. There is nothing wrong with that and in fact, it makes her more interesting. There is nothing wrong with what she said and I feel sorry for the fact that every time any player makes a comment of some kind, people on the board came out with knives drawn. We don't know what players are thinking when they say things, so why spend so much time analyzing them?
